Yes unfortunately music like other professions entails people & egos.I’m currently running one but luckily having a background in music Ed has helped me to encourage and deal with different types of people.
I’ve found that the really good players are so easy to work with whereas the less talented can sometimes cause problems not all but some.
I tried going to one in London years ago and was given daggers just for waiting my turn at the side of the stage. This isn’t why I entered into the world of music & as far as I’m concerned those type of people can go f*** themselves life’s to short !

The Warman 'Stingray' pickup is a very good pickup, and very well priced.
Whether it'll give you the balance you're after, who knows. As suggested, the pickup heights may be the issue there.

Yeah they do look good and really well priced, the bumpf indicates they’d be a higher output the my existing one. Thanks 🙏🏽

My 10p - I have no experience of Wilkinson humbuckers but I did have one of their split Ps and it was excellent. Good tone and a very hot output. If you were to go down the Wilks route, I would recommend sourcing it from a more reputable source. I don't trust AliExpress at all.
yes can’t find any lovers of Ali express here 😆
I’m still in two minds re the mod and a few things to consider the position is quite close to the bridge so maybe that’s the issue ?

Ok that’s handy to know. I’d read that Alnicos because of their content had a higher out put.The roswells on the HB are ceramic that’s why I was considering an upgrade. Strangely enough I forgot to raise them (as someone mention on this is thread) to see if there would be a marked difference , so I’ll try that first. I’m glad I started asking around here though 👍🏽

Some ceramic pickups are more powerful than some alnico pickups although that doesn't really effect tone.
My old Sterling Ray35 sounded really close to a MM Stingray and that had alnico pickups with a Darkglass tone capsule preamp.

Thanks all valid points, raising them, I didn’t think of that ? Great, that’s my next job. I’ve been re setting the bridges and action on both uprights today so will give that a go later. As a footnote Ive tried later in life not to “spend” my way out of any issue & to be honest I’m ok for now with the hb being what it is. It’s good to get some feed back though (pardon the pun 👍🏽)On 18/02/2025 at 13:43, BassApprentice said:Hi!
First of all - this topic might belong in the Repairs and Technicals section. A Mod can move it if they see fit.
Secondly - I am all for modding and tinkering! However, I don't think a £10.99 Wilkinson pickup will be infinitely better/different than the Roswell pickup that's already in place. Also, I'd be wary of AliExpress selling a branded item for 1/6th of the retail price. of course it could be good pickup but maybe not necessarily a "Wilkinson". Regarding the balance of pickups, have you altered the heights of them?

Sorry just one more thing would I be right in assuming that the Alnicos have a higher output than the ceramics ?? 🙏🏽

Hi.Thank you all for your suggestions. Just to clarify I’d love the option of having a pbass and stingray at my disposal in one bass but this isn’t the bass for all the reasons you’ve all so kindly mentioned. Not even sure the Sandberg California which this bass is modelled could do that either ?) my issues have been the imbalance in out put between the 2 sets of pups.
I’ll look at the Warmans and Wilkinson’s then & thank you all for your input 🙏🏽👍🏽 -

Hi yeah, I did consider that but I’ve had so many problems with impedance miss matches between pre amp, amp & piezo that I’ve decided to go down the Electro mag route. The levels are now all there but I really miss the mic ed up sound. I’ve also considered the tone Dexter as I find the technology as with the silent bass fascinating but will wait to see how that all transpires 👍🏽🙏🏽
Why not get the EBS Stanley Clarke and a Realist and blend them? This Will give you the best of both worlds and with independent HPFs you can tweak the tone and avoid feedback.
Appreciate this probably adds another few hundred quid onto your search for tone but perfection isn’t cheap!

All joking aside, multiple pickups means that when you're at a (new) gig and one or other of them is either sounding shite or feeding back, you have the other, and a decent preamp allows you to balance the contribution of each to the overall sound both in terms of relative volume and tone. At the gig itself, 'high-end preamp' is an important idea in terms of functionality, perhaps less so in terms of tone. I used to use three channels in order of preference 1) Mic 2) Piezo 3) Mag. For sure you can get away with 3) alone unless you're on guts, but 1) alone is always more satisfying and 2) always a little less so

Not sure if anyone has seen the Chris Min Doky interview with Geoff at Discover Double bass ?
He made a valid point which kind of did my head in.
The reason the mainly uses the Yamaha Silent is that the mic sound is so much more “double bass friendly “ than any peizo. It’s true piezos allow one to be heard but do they truly represent the sound of a big f*** off acoustic chamber ?
No not really. So having just purchased the Krivo I’ve essentially saddled myself with a massive acoustic pbass sound. To conclude I’m not getting a silent yet to expensive. The Krivo will do for now it has solved so many problems but the nagging feeling of not hearing the full acoustic sound is buggin me 😆🙏🏽👋🏽

Hi. Thanks for your help so far this site has been a god send. I’m Now looking at modding my HB Enhanced 4 string by replacing the bridge humbucker. Not sure I want to spend a fortune don’t want to buy a pick up that’s worth more than the bass 😆 but it definitely needs the upgrade.I’m thinking Wilkinson WJM there’s one on Ali Express for £10.99.
I’m not looking to get an exact MM sound already have that on other basses but just want to get a more even blend volume wise between the existing PJ pu and the humbucker.I can’t remember if I’ve had a Wilkinson before( I know the old memories going) so thought I’d inquire here ❓ 🙏🏽 Thanks PF

It looks like it's just a P-Bass pickup mounted on a plastic project box with volume and tone controls, and a bracket that attaches to the fingerboard underside with velcro. Less elegant than some, but it would save some tinkering if you wanted to go the P-Bass pickup route.
Yes I think you might be right about that.I’ve just got a Krivo and happy with it. 👍🏽

Hi I bought an older Harley Benton Eub ( the Palantino clone) it’s been modified with a fishman preamp installed in it.
It does sound, good but I can’t find any info on the preamp as it seems to have been discontinued.
Does any one have any info.I’m looking for a operational manual or schematics of some kind Thanks
