1. Well, it will be sitting next to my big rig at our studio, like it always does. I just thought I would try and incorporate it in to my rig and sound and it sounds sweet cranked up, just not loud enough. Not saying I will be trucking it to gigs or anything. If it works, it works, if it doesn't I will take it home and use it as a practice amp.

Just looked you up, Bill. You make some very sweet looking stuff!

  2. Sounds like I haven't explained what I actually want to use it for.

I want to be able to run an AB type set up with my current head and cabs. The switch was so that I could silence the speaker, in order for me to run the amp fairly hot in to the effects loop in on the head. I would run an AB pedal in order to utilize the sound like I would with a normal pedal. It wasn't really for recording, just to have some variation with the sound I can chuck out.

In essence, I would be treating the amp like a pedal.

Shoot me down if this is a stupid idea.

  3. Interesting stuff bheys.

After considering the comments, I have started ordering bits to make a Firezog Line out box. It will incorporate a switch to shut the speaker off and a 100w 8ohm dummy load so I don't fry the thing!

I'm not in to spending loads of money of stuff if I could actually make cheaper while learning about it.

Will post up if/when I get it working!

He only has to tap both sides of the inverter stage, capacitor isolated and resistor padded, with an output level pot for good measure. You probably don't understand a word of that, a good techie will.
Yep, I'm with you, still learning so you will have to bare with me....

Would I be right in assuming that when you say the inverter stage, that's the preamp stage? So you are suggesting tapping it with a balanced XLR with appropriate cap and resistor to drop and power down to a suitable level?

That is sort of what I had in mind, but wanted to try and tap the amps raw sound after it had travelled through the EL84's, which is why I was asking about tapping in between the amp and speaker. I could then potentially use my bigger rig to amplify it. It's also something I could easily do myself while the amp is now in bits as I'm replacing the valves, and pots etc.

Thanks for your input on this.

  5. Hey there chaps!

I was wondering if anyone had made a line out box on here? The sort I'm thinking of is one that would 'tap' in between the amplifier and speaker.

    Like this one here.... http://www.diyguitarist.com/GuitarAmps/LineOutBox.htm

Although I would hard wire it in and screw the box to the inside of my old WEM Dominator 45 Bass. I thought something like this would come in handy for recording and putting the old girl in to my main bass rig to amplify it.

Any thoughts? Good or bad idea?

  6. I was rightly or wrongly comparing the delta 10's I have to the delta 15, I don't think I could bare to rip the Dominator to shreds, it means quite alot to me as i've owned it for 17 years.

The delta pro seems like it might be the best bet in terms of the sound I would want to get, but if you think the Celestion Neo is the most promising, it might be worth considering? Might save my back a little bit too....

If you could model the eminence neo's, it would be most appreciated. :-)

The cab will have an internal volume of about 45litres, a bit small for a 15. Its probably got a huge bass hump and doesn't go too low with the fitted speaker.

Speakers that would work in your cab might be
    Fane 15-500 £68 small bass hump, f3 74hz 112db output
    Fane 15-400 £54 nearly flat 115dB f3 91Hz
Celestion BN 300S (neo so light weight) £75 Small bass hump f3 92
Eminence Delta 15pro £74.96 3dB bass hump, pronounced midrange hump f3 73 Hz
Interesting and possibly not unlike the original as new, though I'm guessing here. Eminence Delta 15A loud with huge midrange and bass hump, wild and wooly Up to 120dB f3 73Hz.

I'd go for the fane 15-400 for a cheap uncoloured sound or the Celestion Neo. Both would match a drummer but might need a little help from the PA in a medium sized venue. The Delta might be enough on its own for small and medium gigs. There's other alternatives especially if you want to pay more. Prices are from Blue Aran. Blue Aran you owe me.

When I was doing PA in the olden times the WEM PA anp was the most desirable thing going, 100W of pure transistor power and made for PA with a flat response instead of a borrowed guitar amp. Pink Floyd were so proud of theirs they put them on the album sleeve. Google Ummagumma
Hey Phil,

That's a crackin' bit of info. Thank you very much.

Your right, bit of a tiny combo to have a 15 inside. Also right when you said about it not going down too low... Packs a might punch, but not a low one!

I've got two 10 inch delta's in one of my cabs, I like the sound that they chuck out... So I might go for one of those. They sound pretty decent on break up with my big muff and tech 21 xxl. Plus I'm a bit of an eminence fan boy.

I've got my eyes on some lovely looking el84's at the tube amp doctor, some of their TAD matched ones.

I'll get some pictures up when I get it all sorted out.

    Thanks again.

  8. Right then, the Multimeter is saying 7.1 when I touch the speaker connections. (The amp is now in bits so the speaker isnt attached to anything)... So i'm assuming it's an 8ohm speaker as I've read that most 8ohm speakers measure at about 7ohms?

Measurements for the cab are 23 inches high, 22 inches wide and 8.5 inches deep. Take 5 inches off of the height for the amp gubbins that should be inside the cab, as I've have taken them out.

  9.
Unlike transistor amps, providing the output from the amplifier is set to the impedance value of the speaker, you will get the rated output from the amp, it doesnt matter if its 4, 8, or 16

However, a valve amp must be set to the impedance value of the speaker, otherwise when a signal passes through it there is a real danger of damaging the amplifier.

Therefore 'IF' it is a 6 ohm output and you connect a 15 ohm speaker, you will not get reduced output, you could very well fry the amp.
Crikey.... There isnt an impedance changer switch or anything... If such a thing became a problem, how would one change the impedance the amp was chucking out? Knock three times?
