  1. Thanks guys, keep those opinions coming. I know I'll have to experiment a bit but your experience and expertise will help me to make a more informed choice! Just remembered my amp has a limiter built in - would that change your opinion on where the compressor would go?
  2. OK, so apart for the position of the wah and compressor in the chain it's pretty much as tayste_2000 said then? I realise that most of this comes down to personal preference but obviously there are some pedals that for logical reasons work better either at the front or the end of the chain (for instance tayste's reason for the octaver & synth wah to go first makes sense to me). I can see what both of you are saying about the compressor - I've found that putting it after fuzz does tame the sound a bit too much for me, but then I can see why you'd have it after the octaver/synth/phaser to even out any nasty peaks, perhaps affording the amp some protection if things get a bit silly. I'm pretty happy with the order of my current pedals (although I may switch the phaser and chorus around as tayste suggests for a more extreme effect) so I guess I'm just looking at where the new pedals would fit into my existing chain. I'm not really about subtlety, effects-wise, as I'm usually holding down the low end beneath two heavy guitars so any effect I use has to cut through the mix (think along the lines of Tim Commerford & Chris Wolstenholme).
  3. Right guys, I've recently gone "pedal mad" and picked up a few used pedals to widen my range of sounds. Only trouble is I'm not sure which order to put them in. At present (in order) my signal goes: Bass > Korg DT-10 Tuner > Modded Boss CS-3 Compressor > EHX Big Muff > EHX Small Stone > Boss CE-2 Chorus > Amp New ones to be included are: Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah, Digitech Bass Synth Wah, Boss TR-2 Tremelo, Boss OC-2 Octaver and an as-yet-unacquired delay. I'm pretty sure the wah needs to go near the front of the chain, but I prefer it after the Big Muff, so I guess that would go between that and the Small Stone? I assume the delay would need to go right at the end, but what about the others? Cheers, Matt

I find rehearsal much more enjoyable since purchasing some ER20's, plus I find where I've had trouble hearing myself at gigs I can now hear everything much more clearly. Probably the best tenner I've spent in a long time.

  13. Yep, tried the quick fix but no joy, so I've got a tech to have a look at it whilst I've got a couple of weeks until the next gig. Had to DI direct into the PA at last night's gig. Slightly odd experience not having my rig behind me. Thanks though guys. I appreciate your advice.

  16. Been reading the forums for a while, and a couple of members have been kind enough to help me out with a recent tech problem, so I thought I'd better introduce myself. I'm Matt, I'm 29, from Sheffield and I've been playing about 12 years. I play in a hard rock/grunge band called Subnova ([url="http://www.myspace.com/subnovaband"]myspace[/url]). We start recording our debut album in August and we've recently secured an endorsement deal with Ernie Ball Musicman. I play a '99 Warwick Fortress One through a Crate BX-220H head (via several FX) with custom-made 4x10 and 1x15 cabinets. I also have a '94 Mexican Fender Jazz, which rarely gets touched these days but is handy as a backup. It's nice to be in touch with so many other bassists, where I can live without fear of being ostracized for only having four strings

  18. It's definitely more of a hum than a hiss, and I've fixed the clicking, which was an unrelated fault (dodgy XLR cable). I suspected it might be a ground loop so I'll give this a try at the weekend. Many thanks for your help. Incidentally I guess this doesn't really solve the problem outright unless I take my own XLR cable to gigs, right? Or am I correct in thinking that most DI boxes have a ground lift anway, so I should be OK?
  19. Sadly no, plus I've tried all the suggestions on the common faults page (changing power leads, unplugging FX, changing basses etc) and it still hums even with nothing plugged into it at all. Looks like I'll need to get it looked at

  21. Hi all, newbie with a problem for you to hopefully solve: The problem concerns my bass head (Crate BX220H) which I've been running for about 8 years with no worries. Lately I've been having problems at gigs with the XLR Line Out feeding a lot of noise to the PA (depending on the PA it's either a constant kind of low hissing/humming sound or occasionally an intermittent sort of random clicking, both of which can be quite loud). I suspect it's an earthing problem. Up until recently it happened once in a blue moon, but now the humming's started happening at rehearsal (I line out into an old PA to spread the bass around the room so our guitarists can hear it better) so I'm pretty keen to sort it as I've got a shedload of gigs through the summer. Is there a simple solution, or should I get the head looked at by a tech? Hope you can help
