2.
Is there any music track someone can recommend that is the prototypical "Musicman Stingray" track, that really shows off the sound. Sort of like the way that the intro to The Clash's "London Calling" shows off the Fender Precision sound?
There are so many. Some preferred ones :

John Scofield - Pick Hits live
    Brothers Johnson - Blam

  3.
how difficult would it be to redrill it for 6 bolt? I know we had this discussion in the old thread but it got confusing and a bit technical...
It would need some work. Much easier if its for a 4 bolt 'ray.
For a 6 bolt, would need to be redrilled and sealed which normally means a luthier.

  4.
What the......You're a fustrating character obi,I offered you £200 for the neck a while ago............And you didnt bother to reply! too late now....I had to switch my central heating on this week and we all know how much that costs.
Dude I replied to you on Sep 20 and Oct 1 - both pm'd

  5. Hi back in the UK again and now able to add photos.

As said before its been drilled for a 4 bolt by the bass gallery where it was bought.

Got it about 4 years ago. Rarely been used, only been gigged once. Why you may well ask. Well my number 1 bass is a '78 stingray. The '87 ray with graphite neck doesn't get a look in. I prefer the restrained sound and feel of the '78.

I've switched back to the original maple neck.

Neck has standard trussrod adjustment at headstock. Compared to wooden neck, gives more precise sound (less coloured as you move around neck), better sustain and full rich sharp sound.

Price is £240. Based in West London. Pick up preferred but will post.

  6.
I remember in the late 80s/early 90s getting hold of the famous 'In The Shadow of Motown' book/cd set and spending a few weeks or months looking at what were generally some very sophisticated and demanding bass-lines (and great reading practice, if nothing else). Some of these lines were fantastic (the line to the bridge on the Diana Ross live version of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' springs to mind as an absolute diamond). After a while, however, and after visiting the original recordings of the tunes involved, I clocked the fact that, despite these wonderfully complex and intelligent lines, I didn't actually LIKE most of the songs - a lot of it is bubblegum and some of it just plain bad!

I have since tried (with varying degrees of success) to listen to all music wholistically and not just from a bassophile point of view. As a result, massive amounts of music that other bass players find exciting bores my rigid - great bass playing, lousy music.

So, my question is, what are the tunes where the basslines make you think 'wow' but you never listen to them because the tunes are s***e? Some of mine.....

'Le Freak' by Chic - great line, naff song.

'Car Wash' by Rose Royce - we all like that fill but....yeeeeeeeeeeuch!

Almost anything by Tower of Power!

Loads of Jeff Berlin tunes, especially that awful train effect on 'Runaway Train' on 'In Harmony's Way' - criiiinge!!

All of Steve Bailey's 'Dochontomy' cd.

    Stu Hamm's 'Radio Free Albymuth'

    Wooten's 'Amazing Grace'

The list goes on and on and on.....
Tower of Power !!!

The early stuff has some great choones...'so much oil in the ground, etc'.

    The rest I concur

  7.
iirc i think the area which you drill into is specially reinforced so that this wouldnt be a problem....
Correct, it is reinforced and can be drilled without any issue.

If anyone wanted this for a 6 bolt, I am not sure whether the position holes for a 4 bolt and 6 bolt match, i.e. only need to drill 2 holes or not.

  8. I saw Hadrien a few times in Paris in the late 90s + early 2000 or so. Didn't know who he was. Only realised a few years ago. Back then he was playing in jam sessions (and still does) at the baiser sale. He had a tendency when I saw him to overplay and play too loud over everyone else.
Last year , as a big fan of McLaughlin, downloaded his live album from his site. Very impressed by Had's playing, use of effects and especially restrained ambient textures on a couple of tracks. Very classy. Great musicianship from everyone on an album not unlike Pangea + Agarta (spelling) from Miles where the instruments blend, change tones, where guitar doesn't sound like guitar, etc

  10.
Do you have a ballpark figure in mind? These early JV series Squiers usually attract a good premium because they were so well put together, but as yours has been heavily modded to your own spec I wonder what value people will put on it?

Best of luck with the sale.

    Cheers

    Hi, £400.

    Cheers, K

  11. Hi, 1983 JV jazz open to offers.

I've owned it since new. Practically my first bass I bought back in 1984 from the late CC Music in Glasgow.

Its been heavily customised over the years; respray, defret, and EMGs. All this work was done in the mid 80s by Jimmy Moon.

The EMGs are first generation top of the range. Cost £150 back in 85/86.

Rarely use this bass as I don't play fretless anymore and I have 'too many basses' (according to the wife).

Bass is light, and very well constructed. Even better than than my stingrays. No neck / body gaps. Neck is slim and straight. No issues at all.

Even if you're not a fretless player, you could get it refretted and have an instrument capable of mixing it with 1k jazzes for much less.

PM me for questions & other pics

    Cheers, K
