1. Hope everything works out for you.

PS : to save on carriage, you could always leave some of your gear (specifically the Alembic or Pedulla) at Obi's shack pending your return

  2. Interesting thread.

I started off with 70s Precision back in the early 80s, moving to a JV Precision (and also a Jazz) and then to a Stingray (which I still have) I found Precisions to have a woolly imprecise sound which Stingrays do not (IMO).

Got both a 2EQ and 3EQ. The 2EQ is a different beast, and has a fuller bottom end. An old thread on the dudepit explained the difference in detail. Both cut through live though you may need to fiddle with the 3EQ. On a 2EQ, boost bass to half or 3/4, keep treble low, play where a precision pick up would be placed and bob's your uncle.

Alexclaber defined the various sounds of a Stingray, Jazz and Precision pretty accurately.

Its a question of taste. Each to their own.

What's that first tune called? The one where Marcus starts singing "if you want me ..." with the circular pusing bass line?
Sly Stone tune 'If you want me to stay'

Hi, I posted some links to Pino live w/Jan Gabarek, Dominic Miller and other a few weeks ago, taken from the French TV music show 'One shot not' presented by the great Manu Katché.

New series starts soon. Here links to Marcus rehearsals from the same show.

  5. Hi, I own a pre-EB (1978) and an EB (1987).

Difficult to compare the two as the EB is 3EQ. That aside as people say there are good and bad ones from both eras out there. The EB rays are consistent, less likely to find a dog.

A good pre-EB with the extra weight (from my experience pre EBs are significantly heavier than EBs), string thru' body (which gives a tighter feel compared to same strings on a standard bridge) and 2eq sounds and feels great. Personally you can't match it.

  6.
I think Pino is a really great musician but to say the 'range of music he can play is without equal in the bass world' is just wrong. There are tons of great players that are his equal and above. And I'm pretty sure it's not a stake he would lay caim to no matter how good he is (and he is very very good)
Perhaps I was exaggerating. What I meant is that is he is a highly visible first call session player across an incredibly wide range of music; D'angelo, mayer, etc. This is what sets him apart imo. There are few other visible guys out there that match him on this score. AJ is the only one I can think of, and thats going back in time to an extent.

Check out the other vids on same site for more Pino w/Jan Gaberek and Claxico. A lot of good stuff. Friendly Fires are pretty interesting too, reminds me of Talking Heads c/Fear of Music

In France over the holidays. Went to wife's friends place last nite. Dude showed me some recordings of Manu Katché's 'one shot not'. Essentially a better version of Later with Jools but without the boogie woogie piano and added bonus of rehearsals like this with Pino, Manu and Dominic Miller.

The range of skills and the complete range of music that Pino can play is probably without equal in the bass world. Truely multidimensional.

  9. Have both, a 1978 and 1987.

The pre-amps are different. Its been explained on other sites like Talkbass or something.

They sound different but are both recognisable as a stingray. Setting mids at zero on a 3eq does not give the 2eq sound.

In short, the 2eq definitely has deeper lower end and a touch more top end sizzle. The 3eq is a polite version of the 2eq.

I like both but prefer 2eq.

got to do it soon myself.
its on the list of new ones

Still have't finished it. Doing quite a few others at same time. Just done Lonnie Liston Smith Expansions (whole album bar one track).

Going back to Gil this w/e. Will also add 'Back Home' from the same album

  11.
How about a tenner and your unlimited selection of books from my vast but otherwise-charity-shop-bound collection of 40 books? :brow:
I'm after a straight sale as I need cash and space - can't take more books, wife will kill me.
You're based in London - right? So we're on for £15. Its a top notch price.
Let me know when and where
