  1. Hi ! I've got a Rumble 100W first generation, it's a heavy amp, I like it but I'm getting old, if there weren't new light powerful amps I wouldn't feel so old. This is my request : I play a 5 string bass and the double bass, I mostly play jazz, I play in a big band, sometimes duets and trios, it depends. I also play the guitar (7 string guitar) in a jazz style. First I was thinking about a head and a cab then I saw MarkBass and PJB amps... I don't want an AER, not because they are bad but because they are expensive. The Rumble is good but my volume is always at 10 or 20 % above it's too much except on the double bass, it gives a very decent sound. PJB, MicroBass, they seem to be very good but some say that head and cab are better. I saw little heads (Bam200 and Gnome) but the cabs that come with these heads maybe don't have enough low end, maybe I'm wrong. So... What is the best ? A little great combo or a tiny head combined with a PJB cab ? There are many reviews on the net but they play two notes, a pentatonic, some slap, some pick playing and then they say bye bye. Sorry for my English, I'm not from the UK. I don't play in heavy bands but I wonder if a little great combo would be enough for a big band, a big band is not as loud as a rock band and when the bass is soloing, everyone shuts up, I wish they shut up.
  2. Herbie Flowers died the 5th of September 2024. RIP
  3. Welcome !
  4. Artino strings are cheap, they've got no reputation because nobody plays them. Some say they are decent, those strings are on my bass. I asked somebody about them and he said the tension was between light and medium compared to other steel string sets. Give them a chance, I don't want to be the only one who plays them !

    Hi !

    Do you know Tenby ?
  6. This is how it sounds, a bit dark, out of tune, that's sure. Maybe with new strings it will sound better.

    Hi !

No, I'm more isolated. Remember that a large part of Antarctica belongs to Great Britain or the Commonwealth.
  9. I think I will change the strings when my hands don't have fun anymore.
  10. Thanks, at that price, everyone hopes they are good.
  11. Oh ! These strings are very expensive ! What are decent strings ? I was thinking about Gut-a-Like, Pyramid, in that range.
  12. Hi ! I'm happy to see there is a beginner here. I've been playing the double bass for six months now. Although I only play jazz, I'm learning with Nanny's Method, it's old but efficient. Don't be afraid, don't think block and thumb positions are for advance players, just do it. It can be difficult but it's not more difficult than half-position, it's different. If you play the bass guitar you've got a big advantage because you know how the neck works. If you can, watch videos about classical players, I think they are more open-minded than jazzers sometimes, I better say, they go forwards and they explain it with a simple language, sometimes it's not so far from the bass guitar. Don't be intimidated by the instrument.
  13. Hi ! I've been playing the double bass for six months now. My double bass is a Thomann 111, when I ordered it they asked me the setup I wanted (string height), so I said "jazz". The instrument came very well protected, the action is 8mm for G and 12mm for E. When I read comments on forums mostly in talkbass (sorry), I think to myself the action is too high but out of this forum it seems to be "normal". I forgot to mention the strings are cheap, they are steel strings, the brand is Artino, it's what Thomann says. The double has got a good sound, I put a double piezo on it (Shadow 950), I filed some wood in order to install it. Everyone says it sounds good. I think it's the way to go for an affordable double bass.
  14. Poor basses nobody cares about them.
  15. I think I've never tried extra long scale basses like Thunderbirds and kind of (Jackson basses maybe). The best neck I tried ? Warwick and Music Man.
  16. Oh I really thank you ! I've got a Thomann 111, the bass came with the same string action. Of course they are steel strings (Artino strings). I was wondering if the action was right for a synthetic set. You answered more than I expected. So, thank you !
  17. Hi ! I'm sorry for disturbing, I would like to know your string height on this bass. Thanks.

    Hi !

Hi ! I'm happy to be here, I'm from the Continent (British humour), I'm a multi-instrumentalist, I of course play the bass and sometimes the double bass.
