My first bass guitar will be arriving in a few days time 🙂 so I'm looking for a teacher or other resources to get started. I'm mostly interested in jazz, funk, soul, blues etc I'm an experienced musician having played the trombone for many years (jazz, funk, soul reggae big band, classical), the double bass for the last two years (jazz, classical) and I'm a good reader with a pretty good understanding of chords and harmony. I just want to get started on the right foot and not waste time trying to figure things out by myself! Please hit me up with any recommendations! Cheers!

@MuddBass I've touched it up with a bit of wood stain that I had lying around so it's much less visible, you only notice it if your looking now. I'll live with it as @Burns-bass says it's a big thing that will pick up some knocks and bangs if you use it how it's meant to be used ..

Listening to solo DB albums, no backing, just one bass player

Check out anything by Phronesis and Jasper Hoiby. -
Wow! I was in the shop 2 weeks ago and had a long chat with Hamilton all about the process of bow rehairing. No one mentioned imminent closure. 😞

Trying to find a replacement for a broken plastic horn flare. (Eminence APT80-3) The spec changed at some point and the thread is now internal as opposed to external on the one I ordered from DJ Supplies which has just arrived! 🤦🏽♂️ Broken flare is glued back together for now but a new one would be preferable.

I really like the look of this and the reviews and comments I've read sound great.. I have an EA Wizzy 10 at the moment but its struggling to keep up with an 18 piece big band with a loud drummer even in a rehearsal situation.Just wondering what difference would I notice with the Crazy 88. I'm on DB with a Realist PUP and a TecAmp 500 via a Fishman Platinum Pre-amp. Cheers -

Great to hear of your good experience at Bowspeed. You should definitely try orchestral playing, I've done a couple of play days which are great fun, low pressure and great experience. There's always other players there so you can "hide" in the section 😅I'm doing one next month in Crewkerne - a movie themed day - should be a lot of fun! Thanks for this, that's very useful info 👍

Yes that's the one. Piers and Joe who run it are great.

Thanks all. I have taken some legal advice via my insurer and also been in touch with the importer/distributor who has been quite helpful. Hopefully I can get this resolved and my lovely bass fully repaired.

A few months back I bought a Westbury 22mm padded case with wheels on recommendation from my teacher for my lovely Bryant bass. Gear 4 Music were doing a good price on it. Yesterday I found deep scratches and gouges on the back at the bottom behind where the wheels are - closer inspection revealed missing padding in the inside behind the wheels, which I didn't previously notice, so the rivets have cut through the thin nylon and caused the damage. This just happened a couple of days ago as I wheeled the bass a bit further than usual getting to/from a jazz workshop - most of the time I just carry it. Laurence Dixon has quoted £1600 for a full repair, so it be will an insurance job. Gear for music have so far offered a partial refund of £25 for the case - which incidentally has a 3 year warranty.... not happy.. at all ... gutted...😫

I went to Bowspeed with a modest budget of £300. I tried an about 20 bows from £90 up to £300 - even I could tell the differences with my very limited bow technique - I came away with the most expensive (and best) one of course!

Go to Bowspeed in Bristol. Let them know when your coming and what your budget it and they'll get put a selection out for you to try. They have bows from £90 to £££££s so set your budget carefully!! I did this and even with zero bow experience I managed to get a nice bow that my teacher approves of. They will even let you take 3-4 home to try out for a few days. Good luck!

Any ideas what this pickup is? It came with an old battered laminate bass that has now been sold - I'll be looking to move it on if I can identify it. 🤔
-
I've got it and not going to use it...

Try Tom Allen in Bath, he’s good and very reasonably priced.

I’m in Bristol as well - just interested in who is your teacher? I could do with a few classical lessons too!
