  1. Theres a vintage jazz bass doing the rounds on reverb and FB at £3k.  74 sunburst, all the right mojo, mainly original bar the pickguard.  Ive literally just bought a cheap jazzer so i can leave my p bass at home on 'dodgy' gigs but that still doesnt mean im not looking to sell EVERYTHING for the jazz on reverb! :)

  2. Ive read lots about these supposed ‘classic’ old amps but have never heard one in person. Ive picked up a cheapo Eden cab recently and the OCD nature in me has me looking at Eden heads. Research suggests they are clean but warm amps where the pre amp valve does very little i.e no breakup or growl but a general even deep/warm tone.  I do like a slight ‘valveyness’ to my tone and a little growl but do have a few pre amp pedals that could provide this if needed. So, whilst they appear to have been discontinued for a while and eden are not the same of old does anyone here use one that can chip in with tonal comments?

  3. As per my ampeg cab ad, im moving to a combo so this must go. One of the very first ABM’s (originally called Klystron) to come out from the early days of Ashdown. Tatty case but fully functional and sounds like an ABM should. Has a EHX 12ax7 fitted. Collection from Bolton or meet up possible.

    From Ashdown:-

...AND SO THE ABM WAS BORN

And so the ABM was born, simultaneously setting new standards in tonal flexibility, power and reliability. The original name for these first amps was Klystron Bass Magnifier, inspired by a scene from Flash Gordon (one of Gooday's favourite movies) in which Doctor Zarkoff says: “Turn up the Klystron Magnifier”. The huge images of power depicted in the movie sat perfectly with the image and the sound Ashdown wanted to portray. With the name morphing to ABM (Ashdown Bass Magnifier), these early units were built by Gooday, his wife Jane, son Dan, and daughter Daisy in the living room of the family home every evening, allowing him to visit dealers and artists in the daytime. It didn't take long for the reputation of these incredible new amplifiers to get around.

  5. Does anyone here use one of these trouble free?  Basically on paper they look perfect for my current needs and there are a few appearing used for sale. However, my usual pre-purchase digging is just bringing up lots of horror stories (mainly on talkbass i may add) of unreliable power amp sections. Im also aware though that for every bad story there are quiet happy users. I like the idea of a valve pre amp combo with the option of the vintage and modern settings and read that the b15 inspired vintage setting cops a great tone. Im aware that the driver wont put out anywhere near 600w but volume isnt generally to much of an issue with my current band. So, any happy users here or are all the horror stories true?

  6. A question for our resident vintage fender experts please.  Does anyone know what years Fender changed the knobs on their Jazzes from the 'standard' type ones to the strat knobs?  Seems to be late 70's/early 80's looking at online pictures but does anyone know definitive years at all?

  7. So last night i took my ABM 400 to rehearsal where i used the inhouse (and knackered) ampeg fridge.  Got a lovely even and thumpy sound with my flats loaded P bass but the only slight problem (and this may be the cab rather than the head) is that the G and D strings seem to get slightly lost and not have as much umph as the lower two.  I spent hours at home previoulsy getting the pup heights right and will tinker again tonight but can any other ABM owners see any obvious issues with my settings here?  Last time out i engaged the shape option but last night i had this off (i.e button IN).

  8. To update after last nights rehearsal - i cant believe i didnt try the ABM's shape button engaged before!  Using my P bass, Elites groundwounds and fingers i got a nice even thumpy tone with incredible depth but no mud.  Only slight issue was when i changed to a pick the tone seemed to lose some of its 'booty'.  Definitely a happy boy with the ABm tho.  Still have the occasional GAS for a Spyder 550 but for now this old pre-ABM ABM will certainly keep my grin face on
