  1. So, this is a bit of a strange NAD as i was actually SELLING amps rather than buying but this came up at a decent price and a few Poretti beers later i clicked the BIN button!.  I play in a indie and rock covers band, i used flats loaded P's and J's and like a slightly driven/valvey old school tone with a bit of hair to it whilst retaining plenty of bottom end.  My recent amp has been the fabulous Ashdown Spyder which i pair with a 4ohm Eden 4x10.  Gig day arrived on Friday and in the morning the Mesa Boogie walkabout head landed leaving little time to mess with the settings etc.  I chucked it in my car and off to the gig.....WHAT A SOUND!  Initially it was a little TOO drivey with a very clanky distortion but i tamed the gain and used the para Mids EQ to add in my bottom end/bloom.

For the first time i had comments off the rest of the band on the tone, main one being it was much deeper yet somehow clearer than before.  Im still to fully tweak the para EQ asect of the amp as normally im a plug n play kinda guy but i can tell this is going to work so well with the band.  The lightweight nature is just an added bonus!  Pics to follow and open to suggestions on EQ, hins, tips etc.

  2. I think if you want to go 'SVT' the second hand SVTII on Richtone is the way to go.  Based in Sheffield so not a million miles from you and just shy of £900 for the head

I’d love this back. Really would.

    It worked out so well.

Give me a shout pal if you fancy it back. Maybe we can work something out. It is a belter of a bass, just got my eye on another precision along with a drunken Mesa purchase that needs funding 🤣

  4. As I've said numerus times on here, these are such an underrated and a real hidden gem of an amp.  Essentially this is a dual tube (2 x 12AX7) pre amp taken from Ashdowns Big Block amp and combined with a solid state 300w power amp.  Superb sound, like a clean fat valvey sound, this wont do full on distortion/break up but just a lovely 'alive' organic sound.  Has a bit of roadwear to the tolex but nothing serious.  Also comes with a felt lined Roqsolid cover.

Never massively driven, ive used this through a 4ohm 4x10 eden and have never had the volume of half way.  There is some velcro on the top where i have attached pedals but this can easily be removed.  Only moving on as ive back to DI only/ampless stages in the main.

Collection would be from Bolton but meetups possible within reasonable disctance.

    Pics to follow

**THE AMP WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR COLLECTION FROM THIS SATURDAY**

  5. For me the most under rated amp (especially in view that they can be had for as little as £150) is Ashdown's Spyder series.  I have the 330 head which i run through an eden 410.  They are very reactive to valve swapping which suggests the 2 x 12AX7's actually do something rather than be a gimmicky light bulb.  Lovely core tone - maybe not that flexible - but what a tone.  I had one years ago before i really knew what i was doing and moved it on.  Ive now actually learned how to get my sound and its a phenomenal amp, only thing i would shift it for is maybe the 550 version, not that the 330 isnt handling all my gigging needs with ease

I had one of the Fender Mex Classic 70s Jazzes and it was a very nice bass, def worth checking out.

I do like the look of those but seen a lot of horror stories about the neck/truss breaking.  Plenty of photos online of the first block marker popping out and truss rods maxed.  They absolutely look the part tho and have entered my thoughts

  7. Having never bought online/unseen from the Bass Gallery i was wondering if anyone had any experience on here.  I know they have a generally good reputation but a few things stand out.  Firstly, the pictures on their site are small, not very detailed and are generally just 2 or 3 pictures of said item.  Ive used the contact form on their site to ask questions regarding a used bass they have for sale but no response.  I called up a few weeks ago asking for weight, fret condition and a few more pics and was told they would get back to me and still nothing.  Im not tyre kicking here and if all stacks up ill be buying the bass on card but seems difficult to get information out of them and due to location its not really feasible for me to treck down to london to see it in person.

  8. So with the p bass not gaining much interest along with my second thoughts on it im now offering what has become a main gigging bass for me. This is a bitsa bass bought off @AndyTravis of this parish not too long ago. He has done a great job of replicating a 78 Jazz bass using a white Squier CV body and electrics, combining it with a 90’s MIJ 75RI neck (which is absolutely sublime and dates to 85/86 according to the serial!), age correct scratchplate with correct thumbrest positioning, F branded neck plate and Fender machineheads. Its gives a deep growly yet clear tone. For openness i bought it for £550 but it was whipped straight into Jacks Instrument Services in Manchester where he performed an advanced set up including fret dress, full maple pocket shim, new nut, new Elites halfwounds and electrics clean at quite a cost. I do also have a tort guard i can throw in. Usual basschat proverbials of butter, heft growl etc. located in Bolton but can arrange meets.

  9. So,after years as a p bass player my recent band is really suiting my bitsa Jazz.  This is quite a well paid gigging band and i want to treat myself to a new jazz.  Im very much a fan of the 70's styling - rosewood, block inlays etc and do lean towards a 'vintage' type tone.  Ive seen a reasonably priced genuine 77 jazz bass that looks brilliant, would scratch my vintage bass 'itch' and is with a reputable seller.  Secondly I've also seen a AVRI 75 which again is aesthetically bang on but obviously not actual vintage.  Thirdly ive seen a few MIJ 70's reissues that nail the vibe albeit with incorrect pup spacing.

Pricing wise it varies from £2500 for the vintage, £1400 for the AVRI and circa £950 for the MIJ.  Heart is with the 77 but head tells me the AVRI will be the better bass.  Ive always loved the MIJ basses but they generally need a pickup upgrade which ill need to factor in, the other 2 options are plug and play.  Has anyone compared the AVRI's to genuine 70's basses?  I know weight is one consideration as the 77 ive seen is in boat anchor territory but ive also heard the AVRI necks are very deep (front to back) and not inkeeping with the models on which they are based

  10. So recently my gigging jobs have shot through the roof as as such so has my string consumption.  Im nowhere near 'popular' enough or important enough to have an artist deal but was wondering if any 'subscription' type deals are around.  My string of choice are Elites and i did see White Dog Music seemed to offer such a deal where presumably you sign up to a direct debit and a new set of strings are posted out at set intervals.  However, despite trying to email, ring and use their online chat facility i dont seem to be getting a response from them.  Does anyone else know of any of the usual string selling sites (strings direct etc) who offer such a service at all?

  11. Had one years ago.  I changed the black plate out for an aged white one and it looked even better.  Brilliant necks on them, bit barky/boomy but brilliant bass nonetheless.  The grain on yours in particular is stunning
