1.
the bass i'd be replacing would be a squier precision special, they do an all black precision special with chrome scratchplate, but i've gone off my squier
Furry muff! My Status Retroactive J is all black, but it was a wee bit more than £250....

  2.
Sorry for the delay in reply chaps-Walman, your Trace was a bit outside my price range-I've bought the 1x15 previously mentioned-Eude's, in fact. Looking forward to getting my mitts on it. Thanks all for the advice.
Let us know how you get on. Despite other advice to the contrary I think you'll ge ton fine with it! Trace's aren't really renowned for their massive bottom end so the sound you want is definitely there :) In fact I sometimes want slightly MORE bottom end out of mine...

  3.
I'm eyeing up a used 300 watt Trace Elliot 1x15 combo, which is more within my price range. I suspect that this might be louder than the Ashdown despite the same wattage-it's a pre-Gibson designed Trace. I like a fairly trebly sound with not too much bottom end-is this feasible with a 1x15? And if I add a 2x10 cab is this going to lose me a lot of volume? I suspect I should be hanging on until I can afford the GK, which is top of the list at the moment, but that's a long way off and I will then have to find a cab to go with it, so the Trace is looking like a tempting upgrade without having to shell out too much. Opinions?
Trace's are quite punchy and cut through anything, even their 15s. I mostly use a 15" cab, or a 15" combo and both have plenty of treble and attack.

If you add a 2x10 cab then you won't lose volume, you'll gain it! Well, you'll gain moving air and get the full power output from the amp, therefore yadda yadda yadda.....

  4. Been playing for about 13 years, but I don't count the first 6 years as I never had a good focus and just plodded the same cr*p. Basically see myself as a solid rock player, in the Cliff Williams/Rick Savage mould; though I do like playing around a bit with funkier bits and so on I don't necessarily incorporate it coz I am sh*te. Play mostly 4 string thesedays but do love my Groove 5 for the function band. "Meat and potatoes" I think sums my playing up nicely :)

  5.
a very early Goodfellow...so early in fact it was serial no. 001. (I didn't know much about this bass but a friend of mine was in a band with Bernie a while back. He vaguely remembered that the whole thing was put together on his living room floor!)

I picked it up for a very good price in a local backstreet 2nd hand music shop and it was my main (only) bass for many years. Although a bit tatty round the edges this was by far the best bass ever! In a moment of madness I swapped it for a Jaydee (which I didn't get on with).

A year or so after I got rid of it I actually spotted it on some music shop's website where it was for sale once again but unfortunately there was just no way at that time that I had the funds to buy it back. Gutted. And of course, now it is long gone. Bah. Attached pic is from said music shop's website (complete with stuck on price tag!).

    peace

Electromusic! I remember seeing that and drooling for hours.

  6. I miss the J-Retro from my MIM 5-string Jazz, should've kept it for my cheap J copy :)

Miss a Dean Edge Q4 I had for about a year, that was a great bass for not a lot of money and I will eventually own another, just coz.

I have now made the decision never to sell again unless I *really* must, so I'll just get a big collection instead! Almost sold my fretless Groove a few years back, so glad I chickened out. It may not get loads of use but when it does I remember why it's so good.

  7.
But hey, a big hand to your mum for thinking of it in the first place. I don't think my mum ever even realised they were made of wood, never mind if the heating would roger them or not.
Absolutely! Big thumbs up. :)

  8. So, as some of you may or may not know, I'm looking to buy my first home. Wohoo! Getting lots of details, all is spandulous. Quite a few apartments around my area are 60's/70's build and have hot air heating instead of the far more sensible gas fired central heating with radiators and all.

My mum asked a random question yesterday - how does that affect the wood on basses, the necks especially? Any experiences? Should I just not care? See, mother dearest reckons it could dry em out. Personally I reckon as long as I'm sensible and don't sit the basses on top of a vent they'll be OK? Bit like not sitting them right by a radiator really...

  9.
I wonder if there are any Modulus Buzzards in circulation? I know they made a few. Be interesting to find out how they compared to the Status ones.
Apparently not as consistent. I'd love a Status one!

  10. Wattage is a difficult one to quantify with "how much is enough?" because it isn't a true reflection on volume, or SPL. I've used a 500W Ashdown head thru a 4x10 cab and not felt I could get an adequate volume level, but my Trace 300W head thru the same cab was fine with the volume on 3. it's to do with effieciency of the amp, of the speakers, voicings of the amp and speaker (a more "middly" amp will cut thru better than a more "bassy" amp, c.f. my Trace and the Ashdown) etc etc....

But, despite all that nonsense, I'd say no less than 150W.

  11.
When they call it a 'graphite' neck they mean a plastic/carbon weave composite neck. This is basically a plastic neck with carbon fibre woven into the plastic during the moulding process to make it very stiff/strong. It doesn't matter how a manufacturer tries to dress-up the description by calling it 'graphite' - bottom line is it's a plastic neck.
Ah, I see I think. The fingerboard is "Phenolic" which is the bit you're talking about and the neck is a carbon fibre weave, which is graphite? F&*k me, I only play one of them and haven't got a clue.... :)

  12.
I get more female attention gigging as a married bass player than I ever did as a single one. It just ain't fair!!
Yep. I can only guarantee attention if I'm in a relationship with someone. So at the moment it's a barren land out there... :)

  13.
For goodness sakes, someone bite his arm off! :) This is a bargain.

Just because it has a solid state power section doesn't mean it doesn't sound good.
+1. If it sounds half as good as the 1x15 combo that I have then it's a steal.

  14.
(where's that embaressed smiley?)

Of course it was the 12 string. Why Go was the one I was thinking of with the 8! I'm going to have to listen to Leash again as I've not noticed the 12 on that before.
Right at the beginning. I always thought it was distorted geetar, but it ain't....
