  1. Jonas Reingold plays a 4 string bass and 12 string guitar double neck in what is my favourite version of the Genesis song "Firth of Fifth"

He doesn't use both necks in this tune but does elsewhere

If you are going to play live with a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 neck guitar, you NEED to use all the necks at least once otherwise I believe you automatically classify as a cockweasel.

The dude from Coheed and Cambria had a double neck SG in one of their videos, he didn't touch the 12 string neck once, therefore he indeed automatically classifies as a cockweasel. 👍

Did Geddy ever use the guitar neck on his Rick 4080 or was it for show?

  3. Not a bass but I've seen Rick use this live - It was a long time ago but I think that he uses it on "Surrender" which is exactly what my back would be doing if I had to hold onto this thing

I'm pretty sure that he used all 5 necks as well

  4. The Prince's Trust Concerts were always the highlight of the musical year for me in the 80s

To see Phil Collins, Eric Clapton ,Nathan East, Mark Knopfler, Elton John and many others all on the same stage and often at the same time in an amazing supergroup was just so incredible. Not to mention the millions in Armani suits being worn in one place 🙂

  5. I can't say that I've chosen a bass on whether it was active or not - it's usually based on how shiny it is

Most basses I've played haven't had the option of chosing an active or a passive version. The last time I can remember this was the original Bass Collection basses. I had an SB405 passive and later one of the fancy ones with the gold hardware and fancy woods, I forget the model but there was paduak in there somewhere. might have been an SB465

I don’t know if it’s been covered before, apologies if it has…

I just called into PMT in Manchester for the first time in maybe a year, just to have a browse…. and the “bass dept” is literally half the size of what it was. A few of the usual suspects, Fender mainly, not much selection at all.

Is PMT struggling? Closing? Dunno I’m out of the loop.

I think you answered your own question when you mentioned the last time you had been there.

I dont even recall the last year I went into a music shop.

With less footfall, there's going to be less buying so it probably doesn't make any financial sense to have a large area for instuments essentially gathering dust

The width of the VIntera neck wouldn't have normally bothered me, neither would the thickness of it but both together made it feel really chunky and I just couldn't get around it as quickly as I could with other basses before or since. It felt like hard work trying to play songs I had no bother playing on other basses

I think also I'm that used to Jazz sized necks now. My main basses since 2016 have been Musicman Sterlings and Jazzes of various descriptions.

That's interesting as its the vintera P bass i currently have. Why couldn't you get on with it compared to other P basses. Just curious as to whether i should try other P basses before knocking it on the head with them.

  9. The only neck I never got on with was the one on my Vintera Precision. It was super chunky.

That and the anodised scratchplate worked better than any emery board for removing the skin off your fingers

    Beautiful bass though

A lot of people don't get Prog because its not really their kind of music. I don't mean that in a bad way. its just not for everyone.

For me Prog songs had stories within them where you could let your imagination run wild. Probably more so when i was younger and had more imagination. As i've gotten older i'm finding that i prefer a nice vocal melody in the prog songs i buy now.

I used to enjoy those long epic songs from bands like Genesis and Floyd when i was in my late teens / early 20's but i tend not to listen to them these days.

    Dave

I tend to agree but for me it's probably because I might not have 11 minutes to sit down and listen to Heart of the Sunrise by Yes or Firth of Fifth by Genesis but I do have 3 or 4 minutes to listen to a Chilis song

But back to the original thread - I am enjoying watching and listening to Nick's stuff. Even sat through the 40 odd minute VH1 bands reunited video on Youtube and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't recall the last time I sat down and learnt something for myself and not just for the band before now but I'm having a lot of fun learning Too Shy at the moment

  11. You always want to take it easy on the ringer 🙂 Sorry but that typo tickled my funny bone

I've switched from D'addario EXL to nickel Slinkies and found that they are slightly rougher, feel tighter to play and don't last quite as long. The reason I have stuck with them is that they seemed to have someting they add to the fundamental that gives me a punchier sound. I also detune my E to D on occasion and find that they sound better than the D'addarios in that respect as well. Also, since D'addario upped their prices, Slinkies are now cheaper.

    I always use 45, 65, 85, 105

  12. I run my cable in front of me so it goes down the front of my shirt on the outside as I couldn't get on with the cable behind me unless it went inside my shirt. I used cable velcro things to attach an extension cable to my instrument cable from my headphone amp, all the way up to the end of the strap at the bridge end so that I just plug IEMs into the extension right next to the back of the strap

I bought these which are similar to the above ones:

  13. While I was doing what most people were in 2021, doing up the garden, I did away with the old washine line and poles in favour of a whirlygig. I dug the hole and got the bag of postcrete ready first. Gave the spike for the whirleygig a couple of taps, missjusdged it and whacked my finger with a 60 year old wooden mallet.

It was incredibly sore at the time and I thought at first that I may have broken it but after a while I just got on with the next task of shovelling and wheelbrrowing 6 tonnes of gravel from the front garden to the back. After the first couple of trips I noticed that one of my grey gardening gloves had turned red so took off my glove to find that not only had I given myself a sore finger, I had torn the skin wide open.

I had to finish moving the gravel so washed it, stuck on a huge plaster and kept going.

Miraculously, it had healed completely by the time we got to the first gig in August. I still have a line going across my finger where it happened but it healed perfectly as good as new again.

This is a picture taken after 24 hours when I was changing my plaster

  14. As a band we all use IEMs with no backline and I've tried a fair few preamp pedals.

Also, as a massive Gallien Krueger and Flea fan I always loved the 800RB sound so I went searcing for that sound and came across a small company in the US called DiCosimo.

These are all handbuild in the US and until recently had been a one man operation. I took quite a big gamble getting this as, after tax etc, it cost about £340 to get it from the US.

I've used mine with a US Jazz, Player & VIntera Precisions and with my current two basses - Warmoth Dinky Jazz with 18v EMGs & Status Graphite neck and EBMM Sterling 4HH

I can honestly say that I have never had a bad sound and like the original 800RB I had, I still don't use the voicing filters 🙂

They also make an Acoustic 360+ pedal which is also meant to be great but I haven't tried that one

This is my one below set for the Musicman using only the bridge pickup

I've never understood why Flea doesn't use the same basses live as he does in the studio? Wal and Stingray 5.

At least as far as his Jazz bass goes, it was because he couldn't get a sound that cut through live.

The reason he went with Modulus was because he wanted EB to make him a Stingray with a graphite neck so that he could take it around the world and the neck would only need very minor adjustment. Sterling ball refused and Modulus modified their Sonic Hammer bass into the Flea bass. That's the short and vague version as far as I remember.

The only three songs that i can think of that he would need a 5 would be Funky Monks, Righteous and the Wicked, and Show Me Your Soul but I don't recall them being played live very often. He usually uses his silver one for If You Have To Ask for the drop D

I think that the Fender Flea bass with the MM pickup only came about as Flea still wanted to play a bass with a MM pickup and it wouldn't look right him having a signature stack knob Fender but still be playing the Modulus

  16. Ooft, I can't watch videos where the player goes for the carpal tunnel inducing crocked wrist position. There are so many of them as well and this guy's is by no means the worst- is there a reason why you would want to have such a horrible angle between forearm and hand?

I play with pretty much a straight hand / forearm arrangement and, in fact, I've just tried it and I can't even get my wrist to bend that far

Yap, prices have defo gone up.
Recently I have been buying D'Addario EXL165 45-65-85-105 and in July they were £22.89, while now £27.99 on sale, otherwise £35.50. All prices on Gak.

These were what I used when I switched back from flats to rounds as they are smooth for rounds and sound really good. I was buying the twin packs for around £30.

Since they put the prices up I decided to try other strings and have settled on Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys at about £18 a set. I can only get 5 or 6 wedding length sets out of them before they get start to get dull as opposed to 7 with the D'addarios but they sound and feel much better. The E string seems more solid, especially when detuned to D

Get an active jazz bass.  Bridge pickup covers some of the stingray sound, neck pickup covers p bass.  No band is going to take issue with a stingray and jazz as your tools of the trade

Almost exactly what I have - A Warmoth chambered Jazz body with Status neck and EMGs and an EBMM Sterling HH

Both basses have pretty much the same output levels so if I decide to change between them I don't have to touch anything

Both basses are active, have Hipshot Xtenders fitted and Slinky Hybrid strings

Neither bass is a backup as such - I used the Sterling for most of the Christmas party nights and the Jazz for the Hogmanay gig but irrespective of what one I used, the other one was there just in case

3 - another one fender have messed up too but standard pick-up covers with the straight edges, they just look too big. It's like when you see teenagers wearing their dad's shirt.

Still, for £200 it's hard to complain and I'm sure it plays fine & many people probably don't mind the style choices!

I think it's the player series that has the usual Mustang pickup but also a humungous Jazz pickup (relative to the other pickup) as well. A Musicmaster / Bronco sized pickup would have worked much better than the Jazz to keep things in proportion

I'v seen the CV Mustang for £320 which isn't a lot of money either. I think that the HB, given the pickups used, would be a better bass for modding but the Squier would be better if you wanted to keep it as is as it looks more like the real thing

  20. It's going to be a close call between my Musicman Sterling, which reignited my love for the funky Musicman tones, and rediscovering Slinky strings after years of using D'addarios. They sound so much fuller than the EXLs that I was using. I've tried a few different gauges this year but the Hybrid set is the winner as it allows the E to stay full and taught enough when I drop it down to D
