I'm wondering how many of us do 30minutes a day of practice.
I vividly remember reading an article in Guitarist magazine with Jack Bruce and he said that he didn't pick up his bass unless he was writing a song. At the time I couldn't imagine this as the first thing I did when i got home from school was plug in and play until tea time. Fast forward 38 years and I don't pick up my bass unless I have something to learn. Last year I took a year out after 30 years of constant playing and maybe picked up my bass a handful of times, only to make sure that I could still play.
Regarding losing muscle mass as we get older - this is called sarcopenia and is though to begin when we're in our 30s. They can't work out if it's due to not moving as much in adult life as we did when we were kids or if it's just an age thing but it's a huge issue.
This is why I train at the gym. I don't want to be Arnie and walk around like I'm carrying a roll of carpet under each arm, I'm doing it as a preventative measure to try to avoid being frail with arms like knitting needles and not able to walk the length of myself when I get old.
This is another reason why protein is so important for everyone, not just people who go to the gym, as it can help slow this down as well. Just remember to eat plenty of fibre to keep it moving otherwise you can end up getting bunged up 😫🥴
I'm grateful that approaching 50 I am not on any medication as I know a lot of people, some younger than me, who are already rattling with what they have to take. I do currently take Turmeric & black pepper tablets in the morning, Creatine at 11am, fish oil and magnesium bisglycinate at tea time and zinc monomethionine before bed.
Once great exercise I like to finish with at the gym is the farmer's walk. For me it's picking up 2 16kg kettle bells and walking as far as I can with them. Sounds crazy but if you think about it, we all do the farmer's walk carrying gear in and out of gigs so it keeps me in practice between gigs to keep the strength.

Ive always been a believer in having to be physically fit to gig regularly.
You often have to lift x number of times your own bodyweight in gear, set it up, stand for up to 4 hours playing a 10lb bass with a break in the middle to replenish your energy by beasting into the buffet, strip everything down, lift it back out to the car/van, drive home then unload it all into the house/garage.
I'm coming up for 50 and want to gig for as long as i can so I'm at the gym 2-3 times a week. I walk all day at work and go walking at the weekends. Not to mention eating healthily and getting plenty of sleep.

@Delberthot interested in view of hb flats
From what I've been reading recently, there have been a few other members who have added them into their orders from thomann so I'm sure we'll find out before long.
Who knows, they could become the Sue Ryder of bass strings 😄

I've gone the opposite way again.
I used Chromes for years on everything then decided around 2017 that I no longer liked the sound so started using D'addario nickels as they are very smooth. I switched to Hybrid Slinkies in 2022 and have been using them ever since.
I have still been having issues with my basses balancing the way that I want them to since I lost weight so decided to resurrect my Harley Benton JB75. I haven't weighed it but it's pretty heavy being one of the natural ones.
I've got a set of EMGs, BTS system and Hipshot Ultralites fitted - all of which I already had. Plus I had routed the body for the battery when I was using it previously.
I had already parked my Chromes on this bass when I stopped using them so decided to leave them on and I must say that I am loving the sound through my preamp pedal and IEMs so I'm going to use it this weekend,
I also have a sets of EB and Harley Benton flats so may try these out if I like it this weekend

This is one of these basses that I said I would never sell but I'm just not using it. I used Musicman basses for years but in the past 5 or 6 I've seem to have completely switched over to jazz basses.
This is quite an unusual combination of HH pickups, matching headstock, plus it seems to have come with a case for a Stingray instead of a Sterling one 🤔
I always loved Stingrays but could never get the sound that I had heard on all of those records. The answer to this was to buy the slightly more aggressive Sterling with ceramic pickups.
This is a November 2016 model and I've probably owned it for about the past 6 or 7 years.
Recently it developed a fault where it would suddenly go quiet. No crackles or pops or anything, just silence.
It pointed to either the jack socket or battery box, more likely the battery box. Despite using the recommended Duracell batteries, I don't think that it was holding the battery tight enough to make the connection.
The solution was to go to Strings & Things and order a replacement jack and battery box. During my search for the part number for the jack, I came across numerous reports about how it wasn't ideal and could fail due to the design. I found a wiring diagram that had been issued by Musicman showing how to wire up a standard stereo jack instead of the enclosed type that Musicman use.
The short version is that I have replaced the battery box with the correct, EBMM part but I have used a stereo jack instead of the Musicman one ( I will include the musicman one that I bought and is still in it's package if you wish to change it back )
It's in excellent condition, bar some surface buckle rash on the back that I think should be able to polish out as I can't feel it when I run my hands over it. There is a bit of surface tarnishing on the pickup poles that is pretty standard for Musicman basses.
Despite the smaller body and narrower neck, the bass comes in at a surprising 10lbs. I've used this on a fair few weddings and functions and hadn't realised that this was how heavy it was as I always use a neoprene strap of some description.
I wasn't sure how to price this but given that I don't think the Sterling is made anymore, the matching headstock and HH pickup configuration, I would like £1600 for this. I am, as always, open to offers.
I would prefer collection but am happy for you to arrange your own courier.

The way I see the difference between P and Jazz is that I always think that a P bass sound blooms. it's like a lazy sound, not punchy and fast transients, the sound slowly forms. A Jazz on the other hand is more punchy and faster attack.
YMMV but that's how I see both basses. I don't see one as being better than another, in fact one of the best bass sounds I've ever heard is this one at 1:51:
I've been reading this thread on and off since it started and two videos always came to mind when thinking about the difference between P and Jazz and that is Rush playing Roll the Bones Live:
Precision:
Jazz:
The Jazz to me clearly sounds the most suited to the song. It's not that the Precision is bad, it just doesn't work for me here just like I don't think a Jazz would have worked on Dragon Attack above

Originally bought when I switched in-ears, the bass player in me made me buy 2 - you know, just in case one went faulty 🙄 Either that or it's OCD 🤔 I pretty much take two of everything to gigs.
These are two channel headphone amplifiers so you can either take a stereo feed from the desk and have your own level control for each channel or do what I did and take a signal directly from the end of my pedal board into 1 channel and the second from the desk. That way I could mix all of the ban minus me in one channel and then bring my bass in using the other. Overkill but I liked it.
Anyway, the first one was on my pedal board and at some point I took the sticker from the Radial Tonebone that I had and put in on top. It also has velcro on the bottom so is ready to mount on your pedalboard. Looking for £25 for this one.
The second one is as new and still sealed. Looking for £30 for this one
Collection welcome or postage will be £5 for each one.

I’m having a big clear out of basses, strings and pedals. Pretty much anything that I am no longer going to be using so that I can reduce my collection to just 1 main bass, a back up and the pedals that I need.
I have always loved single coil P basses but I am never going to have the opportunity to play this live so I may as well let it go to a good home.
Used for 1 gig in 2023, it's pretty much in mint condition, right down to the fact that the plastic is still on the scratchplate. It also comes fitted with a set of Ernie Ball 2810 flats that I had already bought for a 5 string.
Collection preferred but I am happy for you to arrange a courier as I have plenty of packaging materials to ensure that this is well packed.

when my band moved from backline to IEMS I must have went through about 15-20 preamp pedals before I found the one that I liked. Being a huge Gallien Krueger fan this was one that I had to try.
It's modelled after the legendary 800RB amp we all know and love and comes complete with effects loop, DI out, etc.
Honestly I didn't think that I'd sell this. This pedal and a very special bass that I am planning to list shortly go together perfectly.
I bought this directly from the manufacturer in the US and it cost me, after taxes, about £350 so who knows how much they will cost after the TACO tax is added on.
An interesting story that adds nothing to the value whatsoever is that this pedal was at one point misdirected to Beef Island on it's way to me. Yes that's right, there's a place called Beef Island just west of Puerto Rico.
Collection welcome but for postage I'd like to send this Special Delivery to ensure that it's properly insured and for mainland UK that is going to come in at £10. Tracked 24 only covers up to £150.

I bought this immediately prior to taking a year out from playing so it's never seen a gig since I bought it and still has whatever flatwounds were on it when I bought it. I had one of these bass in the early 90s and fancied another. Plus it was a cheap way to remind myself that I'm not very good on fretless and to stop eyeing up other fretless basses on the marketplace 😂
It has marks here and there consistent with a 34 year old bass and the volume and tone controls are a bit scratchy but I never noticed any noise when playing, only if you let a note ring out and then turn those controls.
I will be supplying a gig bag with this as it didn't come with one. Looking at all of the other basses I'm listing it looks like I must have bought a job lot of Thomann gig bags as they appear next to each bass 🤔😁
I think that this is the lightest bass I have coming up for sale at a positively featherweight 7.8lbs.
Collection preferred but I am happy for you to arrange a courier as I have plenty of packaging materials to ensure that this is well packed.

Bought brand new earlier this year I think 🤔 this is a 2023 Fender Player Precision, going by the serial number, in Seafoam Green with Pau Ferro fretboard.
I fancied a set of Bartolinis after watching a video with Freddie Washington so went the whole hog and paired them with a Six String Supplies prewired solderless harness. I wanted to have the option to return the bass to stock if needs be so I removed the original scratchplate with the pots still intact, even going as far as to remove the bridge to allow me to thread the earth wire through without having to desolder it. This is a replacement scratchplate that I bought for it.
I don’t actually think it has left the house since I bought it and as such is in mint condition.
Although it’s not one I’ve gigged, I am going to miss it. It’s such a stunning looking bass.
Some of the pictures show it with Hipshot Ultralites but I have since removed them for another bass. I have refitted the original tuners, still with the original cellophane covers and hangtags fitted
The weight of this lovely bass is 8.2lbs.
I have a couple of options depending on what the buyer wants:
For the bass as you see it, along with the original pickups, scratchplate and a brand new gig bag I would like £600.
£500 for the bass returned to stock, still including the brand new gig bag.
Collection preferred but I am happy for you to arrange a courier as I have plenty of packaging materials to ensure that this is well packed.

I bought this in early 2024 prior to taking a year off playing and it’s been sitting in it’s gig bag since then.
I had a BB425 and BB1025 back when they were new and for some crazy reason sold both of them. Easily the best passive 5 string bass I’ve played.
When this one came up for sale I had to go for it. It’s clearly been played before I got it as there’s a fair bit of buckle rash / swirling on the back of the body, there are scratches on the chrome control plate and something has rubbed against the pickups.
In addition to this the previous owner has removed the pickup selector switch and rewired this VVT. There was a minute amount of scratchiness when turning the pots but I put that down to the fact that it’s been sat unused for 18 months.
I actually forgot how good this sounded until I tried it prior to listing it but I’ve decided that I am never going to play a 5 string again so there’s no point in hanging onto it and I may as well offer it to someone who will get the use of it.
The weight of this bass is exactly 10lbs but doesn’t seem to feel that heavy when worn on a strap.
Comes with it’s original Yamaha top quality gig bag.
Given the modifications and condition, I would be looking for £550 collected.
Collection preferred but I am happy for you to arrange a courier as I have plenty of packaging materials to ensure that this is well packed.

The difficult bit for me is getting used to the light weight of it. I'm not used to having something so light.
I never liked the sound of it and bought it purely for the way it balanced. A set of EMGs and a BTS system took care of that.
It feels like the bass equivalent of a Skoda to me: solidly built and should be reliable but I don't feel like I need to be overly cautious when handling it. ( I have owned a few Skodas and loved having them )

We need to make it obligatory when starting threads about musicians, especially of a certain age, to include in the title:
""Famous Person's Name Here" - not brown bread"

Statii in general, especially headless ones.
They're either that good or some may be holding onto them waiting for them to appreciate now that you can't get them.
Many years ago after watching a video of Paul Rogers around about the release of his "Now" album, I nearly ordered a Stealth 6 string fretless after listening to Jaz Lochrie's playing. In fact I named my rock band at the time "Overloaded" after the track on the album of the same name and we played both Overloaded and Soul of Love live
Come to think about it we also played Wishing Well and Louisiana Blues

So it was back to plan A which was fit the EMGs into soapbar cases.
The neck pickup was a tight fit length wise but the bridge one wouldn't go in at all due to the tubes (?) for the screws to go through. Luckily I was able to snap one off right at the top of the underside and still had enough room to get a screw past it to go into the body.
I am very happy with the result - looks more or less original (with the exception of the extra pot hole) despite having EMGs and a BTS system EQ fitted.

I've only ever used them once. I put Resolites on one of my '54 Warmoth P basses and snapped one of the screws despite drilling pilot holes large enough.
How do you use an active preamp?
in Bass Guitars
Posted
I begin with volume all the way up, balance slightly towards the bridge and bass & treble centered. I then set my preamp pedal to how I like it.
The EQ on the bass is just used to make small adjustments.
