1. As far as rotosound roundwounds are concerned if you want to get the zing back loosen the strings until they are slack - leave for a day - then tune them up again - the zing is back.

I like ernie balls for their consistancy but rotos on a Jazz is the sound I hear in my head when I think 'Jazz Bass'.

Although I haven't tried DRs yet.......

  2.
I really want to put a pick up cover on my JV Jazz bass over the neck pick up. However I am aware that drilling a couple of holes in the body for the screws could affect the value if I come to sell it on.
    Kevin
Don't sell it then.......keep it.

  3. The beauty of his basslines is the freedom of them. He sounds like he is just improvising as he goes along. I get the feeling that if you listened to seperate takes they would all be very different from one another.

  4. Well I tried a little experiment and was very impressed by the difference between RW and maple necks.

  6.
Not sure on this particular info, but the last two I've seen come into the local dealer have had the most glorious flamed maple on the necks. They're just getting better. Buy one before the powers that be at Corona put a stop this madness! :)
But I have 4 Jazzes already!

Not much of an excuse around here I know.....

  7. For years I played a residency with a blues band in a bar. I have to admit, in those days, we were bad boys and didn't declare the money we made to the taxman.
One of the regulars there, who we got quite friendly with, was a big fan of the band and one night he asked if we would play a gig for his office Xmas Party. I said we'd be more than pleased to do the gig and, just out of curiosity asked where he worked. He replied "The Inland Revenue..........fraud dept" .

It was one of those moments where time stands still and you see your life flash before your eyes. The singers face went snow white and I thought he was going to have a seizure. He must have seen the look of abject horror on our faces and the penny must have dropped because he changed the subject and it was never spoken of again.

So the moral of this story is.........Karma will get you every time.

  8.
I like the fact that you've started with just playing simple things. I did a gig with Winston blissett (I was on drums). What got me thinking about my own bass playing was how he played the simple things so bloody well..

after that I re-learnt every song I've played and just tried to play less, but make that feel great.. that's groove

I starting doing the same on drums
+1

'LESS' is 'MORE'.............but usually you figure that out after overplaying on stuff for years until you eventually get it (of course some people never do).

  9. Well the serial number puts it as a 2006 bass according to the Fender website. So NOT brand new. If I didn't have 4 Jazz Basses already I'd be knocking down his door (he only lives a couple of miles from me in Edinburgh) because it does look like a nice bass. Frankly, if he wanted a decent price for it, he should have put it on ebay a long time ago.

  10.
Cheers Guys.

gjones. I could do that but the whole reason for getting the 70s' classic was for the blocks and inlay.
Yes I really wanted one of those 70's basses but I played one and the neck was awfully chunky. My Jazz bass is based on the 70's model Geddy Lee bought in a pawn shop. He sanded the neck down until it was as thin as a chopstick......you could try that.

  11. I've been keeping my eye on this for a while. It's gone from £1,300 to under £500 in a couple of months

    http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/61/57911161.html

When somethings too good to be true...................?

    Watch out.

  12. Well I've fitted a Fender Jazz neck to a 93-94 MIJ Squier. I tried to fit the same neck to a 2002 Indonesian Squier and it fitted the body ok but the bridge didn't have enough vertical adjustment for the strings to clear the fretboard. With a decent adjustable bridge it would have been ok.

  13. On a random whim I swapped the maple neck from my Geddy Lee Jazz with the rosewood neck from my 1994 Jap Squier Jazz. What an extreme difference in sound. The Geddy Lee now has a much, much deeper tone (which I really like) while the Squier sounds much, much brighter. I had assumed there would be a difference in tone but never expected it to be so extreme. I'd always thought the Geddy's brightness was due to the pickup being nearer the bridge but it looks like it's almost totally due to the maple neck. They both now sound radically different to what they sounded like before the neck change.

You learn something new every day.

  14. I was planning to buy a Promethean because I wanted a lightweight, quality, flexible amp/combo and , of course, because it was the sensible thing to do.

Instead I went and bought this

A combo the size and weight of a small tweed planet.

Which is neither lightweight or flexible. Although to give it it's due it does sound great but I wish it had come with a forklift truck to carry it around with. Carrying it up 3 flights of stairs to my flat after every gig is something I could do without.

250 watts through a 10 inch speaker? I'm looking forward to your review with interest.

  15.
I've been gassing for a couple of midgets. Would like to try them out on stage and see if I get on with them. I'd put one on top of the other, maybe with the bottom one rotated through ninety degrees so everyone can hear what's going on. Then I'd give them both a good pumping for an hour or so, and see how they take it!
You filthy beast! Leave those midgets alone!

  16. The first time I heard that every picture tells a story - and especially maggie may - I hated it. I thought to myself.....'they sound like they're all drunk!'. Then I heard an interview with Rod Stewart and he said that they WERE all drunk when they recorded it! I went back and listened to it again and now it's one of my favourite albums.

I think the trick is to drink a bottle of vodka and make it up as you go along.

  17. The badge thing could a desire for the 'Real Thing'. Also conspicuous consumption may come into the equation as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspicuous_consumption

I am relatively intelligent and am well aware that I am being manipulated by marketing men. I have 3 Jazz basses none of which were made in the USA. I have them because they sound great but I still hanker after an American built one.

    It's a bit sad really.

  18. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Geddy-Lee-Jaz...=item1e5ccc7ff1

This guy is selling a CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. The only problem is that the bridge and bridge pickup position look awfully weird. Initially I thought he had fitted a Geddy Lee neck to a standard body but then I noticed the bridge cover. I know that I couldn't fit a bridge cover on my Geddy Lee because the BadAss bridge extends too near the end of the bass. Which makes me think this guy has moved the bridge forward to allow him to fit one. Still it's pretty cheap for a Geddy Lee ........if you don't mind a bit of D.I.Y. to return the bridge to it's original position.
