1. Well Lozz, I also considered the Ampeg PF 500 you swopped your TC with because you gave it such a glowing review. I tried out both in the shop but was seduced by the TC's Hi Fi ness (?) even though it cost cost £200 more. I think if I want that classy sound I'm going to have to fork out for high end 10 inchers - or alternatively just play it through my Hi Fi in my living room :)

  2. This is the Cab, supposedly the best Ashdown 15 incher money can buy http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=186 but Ashdown don't specialise in Hi Fi amps so it probably won't be tuned for that kind of sound.

I have managed to get a better sound out of it after tweaking the amp a bit but still that low mid Knob doesn't do much of anything at lowish volumes. Maybe I need to give it a bit of welly, which I will do at the weekend when my band has a rehearsal.

Give the Ashdown it's due, I bet it's a trouser flapper when the amp is turned up LOUD.

  3. I sold my Fender TV15 Bassman (the new tweedy one) and bought a brand new TC Electronic Classic 450. The idea was to give me some flexibility in what I took to gigs by having a separate lightweight head and cabs.
It sounded excellent in the shop (all hi-fi through the TC 2x10 cabs tested with a USA Jazz) but when I got it home and put it through my Ashdown classic 15h Neo cab it sounds.......well pants.
The main thing is that when I turn the low mid beyond 2 on the dial (centre setting is 0 and either side of 0 it goes from 1 to 5 so I'm talking about when I want some bassy low mid - at higher low mid frequencies the knob works fine) nothing happens! There is no discernable change in the sound coming from the speaker (all the other knobs work fine at all settings). Now I'm pretty certain this wasn't the case when I tried it in the shop so I'm wondering if it has something to do with the frequency response of this particular Ashdown speaker (or all fifteen inchers)? I am assuming this is the reason I can't get a decent sound from this amp/cab combination because low mid is a very important element of the sound I'm looking for. Does it mean I'm going to have to fork out dosh for a set of TC 2x10s or a 4x10?
Has anyone else had this problem with TC amps not being compatible with other companies cabs?

  4. Sometimes yes and sometimes no. If it's a good sounding room and the bass is going through a decent P.A. (and the amp is just for onstage monitoring) then a good sound engineer will bring out the different qualities of the bass.
As far as Wals are concerned I recently I played a gig at a venue here in Edinburgh and after my band had finished our spot I was standing around chinwagging with my back to the stage when the next bands bassist started his soundcheck. WHAT A SOUND!!! I went back to see what on earth he was playing that could sound that good...and guess what......it was a Wal MKIII. It also sounded great with the band.
But I have to agree that the average punter will not know the difference between a £95 Squire and a £3000 Wal. And frankly it's not what you play it's also how you play it.

  5.
Hi gjones.
Thought I wasn't going to get any replies to my enquirey about the TV. I have had so much interest in selling the Ashdown rig, but nobody has committed yet. I may be interested in the deal you suggest but don't think I will get along to the Voodoo next time. I think I've had enough for the time being. Do you think the TV 1X15 is better than the 2x12 which is the one I was interested in. Are you local? have I met you at the Voodoo?

    Thanks for your reply.

    Jack
Well I haven't tried the 2x12 so I couldn't give an informed opinion on that. I bought the TV15 after watching this video by Ed Freidland http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGuitarMag#p/u/39/PMfDfVLpODw It definitely provides the sound I was after and I'm very happy with it but feel I'd prefer a seperate amp and speaker rather than a combo as it's a more versatile combination.
I live in Edinburgh and I don't think we've met but I've seen you up playing at the Voodoo Rooms. You might have seen me there playing with The Dana Dixon Band or on stage with Sandy Tweeddale who's my brother 'in' Law.
The next voodoo room jam is on wednesday July 13th pity you can't make it as it would be the perfect opportunity to bring the Bassman along so you could play it at volume (Rod Kennard would probably appreciate actually playing through an amp rather than the PA too).

These are good amps for the money! Should be able to pick one up secondhand too for about £100. :)
+1

Yes I have one and they are cheap n cheerful n loud n bulletproof too. You may even get one of the later ones with a built in compressor for £100 2nd hand.

Oh and I have one.............but I'm not selling it.

  7.
I played a Fender TV bass combo today, the little one with the 150w output and single 10" speaker. It is obviously too small for a large gig but is exactly the kind of sound I'm after. Has anyone any experience of the larger 350w combo with the 2x10" drivers. Would this stand up to a fairly large event?
    Thanks
    Kedo
Well funny you should ask that because I have the 15 inch version. They are certainly loud enough, as they have a 350w digital power amp going through a 4 ohm Celestion green label speaker. I've played with a loud drummer at the Voodoo Rooms and John Bruce turned up to 11 (I'm sure you'll know John) so it's more than loud enough for most gigs. Be careful though because I notice you're downsizing and selling your stack and these are hefty beasts (although they do come with wheels).
Weird thing is I've been looking for an Ashdown ABM and 15 inch cabinet so if you are in the market for a TV Bassman we could maybe do a deal. If you're interested I could bring it along to the VR jams and you could check it out in a band situation.

  8.
In all these years, this is the first time EVER that I see a Japanese '70s reissue with proper pickup placement. Normally, they all have '60s spacing, that beats me.... Maybe because this is a '75 reissue, so it's different, I do not know.

    Beautiful!
Yes I know what you mean. It's weird though because my Geddy Lee, which is made in Japan and based on a 72, has the correct placement. But all the other 70's reissues usually don't.

    Good luck with the trade.

  9.
Cheers!

Yes, I could be the first one. Hoping it'll be exactly what I need for the kind of gigs I do. I've no doubt I'll be wetting myself with excitement so much that I'll be dying to let everyone know what I think of it. Your reviews of the 1x10 were part of the reason I went for it, that and it's small, powerful and inexpensive, a 500 watt, 4 ohm, 2x10 amp, couple of sets of strings and a stand all for less than 700 quid delivered and with 3 year guarantee!

The only thing that could make me happier would be a weekend trip with the family to a delightful part of Scotland to pick up an MIJ Jazz, so I think I'll do that tomorrow!
Hope the Jazz AND the Promethean do the business (well I know the Jazz will). And remember the the review of the Ibanez for all of us with gigantic amps and flats on the 3rd floor.

  10.
Awesome.. how did that come about?
It's a local jam night up in Edinburgh that Ash Gupta organises. Next guest artist is Eric Clapton...............(knowing Ash I wouldn't be surprised)

  11.
Small update....

I decided to go with Ou7shined's suggestion of blu-tack which works really well, and I don't seem to have a problem playing with them on. But I'm going to play a gig with them on before I take the plunge.

One small issue though. I find myself resting my hand on the bridge cover when I'm playing pick style. The blu-tack seems to move slightly and the cover slips down. Not a major problem but I have to keep re-adjusting it which is a minor inconvenience :)
Just dinnae bother. I bought a set put them on (they looked lovely) but they really cramp your style when playing. Fender knew what thet were doing when they stopped selling basses with the covers on.

  12. I've swopped a standard Fender bridge for a standard one and frankly it made no difference. I like the vintage fender bridges because the spiral grooves on the saddles mean you can change string spacing very easily (and they're cheap compared to a BadAss).

  13.
....and the Red SUB moves on again.

Did a shady meet-up in a service station carpark somewhere in Scotland. Pleasant bloke to deal with and all as expected and agreed.

    Recommended :)
Pleasures all mine.

  14. Met up with Howard and we traded basses - MIJ P for MM SUB halfway between Carluke and Edinburgh in a dodgy motorway service station. Good guy and good communication too. Bass as described and happy all round.

Hope you like the SUB Howard.

  15.
It works spot on. The jack was a bit rubbish when I got it and I replaced it with a new Switchcraft one. There is generally a few knocks and scrapes on the body but no big dings or nastiness. Tuners work. The only properly bad bit is the bridge as some of the screws have seized up. I have a new Wilkinson one (somewhere) that I was going to put on next time I changed the strings. I got it as something I could stick in a gig-bag and not worry about too much but I've never really used it that much.

It sounds like a proper Precision. Worst bit pictured...
Sounds fine to me. I will PM you.

    I want one! :)

    What does it do?

  17. After checking my bass against this one http://kenji-cij.blogspot.com/2008/11/jb62-us-3ts.html it confirms I have the 62JB-US version. I hate to tell you all but I checked the neck and the only thing on it was the figures 16-0. Means nothing to me. So my conclusion is checking the neck won't tell you anything. Best to check if there's a nice woodgrain (if it's sunburst) to confirm it's alder as basswood doesn't have much of a grain , spiral saddles, size of machineheads and strap button on the back of the headstock.

    this is my bass

Which happens to be for sale soon. I have it on hold until the 9th July for a fellow basschatter but after that offers gladly received looking for £450.
