1. Doing this incredible stuff to me is like guitarists and shredding - there's always going to be someone to come along and do it faster with shredding, with bass, always someone to push the technique even further. In the end we'll always be going back to the James Jamersons, Bernard Edwards and Norman Watts Roys of this world.

  3. Try these guys - don't know if they fit your genre but as Duke Ellington said, "there's only two types of music, good and bad". I'm an old jazz & blues fart but I still think these guys fit in the former category:

  4.
I had a look at a few of these vids last night.

Frankly, I don't care what instrument it's played on, or what advanced technique he has to perform to play it.. they just ain't good tunes.

    IMO, of course.
I used to have this argument with a young guitarist friend who was a genius, and kept on writing these more and more complex pieces for his band. Then wondered why he could never get the right musicians to play with. I kept challenging him to write a tune/song. He never understood the difference.

Even as a technically fantastic, and a pleasant enough piece of music, (as opposed to a tune/song)I do find the technique is disrupting the composition - all that using the right hand up the left hand end seems to break the flow, even when not watching.

  5. When you're in the Eastern most town in the UK a long way! Was in Ipswich for a couple of years and regularly went to Stowmarket (25 miles) or Felixstowe and Saxmundham for Jam sessions. You're only 25-ish miles from Norwich - surely there's something going on there? Check out Grapevine Magazine (great mag founded by a great bass player, Paul Burrows - now at the M.U.) for what's going on throughout your region.

  6. Went, representing the company I worked for at the time (as everyone else had made their excuses) to a gig we were filming in Zwikau (sorry, don't know if that's correct spelling) amazing sports hall venue in the former East Germany - it was the James Last Orchestra and they were amazing. Got very drunk with the horn section later that night!

  7.
At the risk of being trounced on here for watching such rubbish, have a look at 'Strictly Come Dancing'
Fortunately you haven't been trounced as hopefully the sensible folks on these forums realise that Strictly has some of the best live musicianship on UK television.

Back to the topic (and from tonight's "Strictly") - Aretha Franklin's Do Right Woman.

  8. First up, sitting at a big old farmhouse table at Bishopstock chewing the fat with Steve Cropper, Donald Duck Dunn and Booker T thinking "I'm the only one here I haven't heard of" when the stakes are raised even higher by Taj Mahal coming in and joining us. The other one was nearly calling security to get Mike McCartney removed from backstage at a John Mayall gig in Liverpool - soon realised that it wouldn't have gone down well with the home crowd!

  9. 5 string Chambered swamp ash J bass body,
    35" scale,
    maple neck,
    unlined ebony fretless fingerboard,
Bartolini's (they just seem easy to use).
Would have had this some time back but Warmoth say they can't do a chambered body with a 5 string neck pocket.
Finish would be just letting the swamp ash speak for itself through something like the Fender Mary Kay white (unless I got whip the top off my old friend's former Sei 6 string that had the ugliest spalted maple it looked fantastic). 'til then I'll have to cary on with the EUB - problem is, everyone wants to play in E and I hate playing open - comes from years of playing rhythm guitar in a big band - all those Bb's and Eb's!
Some really nice customs on show here - nice work all of you keeping those amazing luthiers in business.

  10.
Greetings from one West Sussex bass player to another.. the more the merrier I say!

Is here room in West Sussex for 2?
I should hope so - Silverfoxnik is nearer to you Captain - and we all know what a slow road the A27 is.

    Thanks for the welcome.

  11.
At work we have access to a schertler system for about £350, think thats overkill haha.
Fitted a Schertler to a 'cello for a customer once - it was stunning. Also supplied them to a couple of classical guitarists as well with equally impressive results. You say "system", worth looking at using the pick-up alone as that's what we did with the 'cello, straight into an SR Jam 150.

  12. Sorry, been happily enjoying the forums for a while now, but due to the fact that I hate writing about myself, have somewhat rudely not introduced myself yet! I'm Mike, an ageing bass player in West Sussex, started learning double bass way back at school, switched to g***ar for many years before rediscovering the joys of bass six years ago when I owned a guitar shop - something to do with all the shredders and noodlers perhaps? I now play EUB (Aria SWB) through a Yamaha BBT 500H and matching 110 cab - love the portability. Playing stripped down acoustic covers in a 3 piece (trio, not suit). Thanks for the entertaining and informative forums, look forward to being in touch.

    Cheers,
    Mike

  13. Failed to sell twice on Ebay although I think I was being realistic. Now looking for trade in for sale section.

This is now relisted at a lower reserve - pretty confident that the last price was fair so this is a reluctant price drop for a great cab.

New to the forums so no sales feedback - though if anyone knows me from the couple of years I owned the Guitar Shop in Ipswich a plug would be very helpful!

I've just put my Yorkville 300w 8 ohm XC115 up for sale on Ebay where I do have excellent feedback. Playing EUB in a 3 piece so don't need this - got it for another band with a great drummer so needed an extra bit of poke. Only gigged a handful of times.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  14. Every Japanese Fender I've laid my hands on seemed to have a nice vibe to them, that little something you just can't explain. If you get the chance to go through a batch of Squiers there will also be one out there that also feels just right. Then, as others before have said, it's a case of upgrading the hardware. (Had a guitar shop once, hence have seen a few).
