I think I read somewhere it's not properly analog although that may be incorrect.

I use a Carbon Copy and am very happy with it.

Anyone with the older model TKO, there's 2 1/4 jacks that say 'pre out' and power amp in' or similar. Does this mean I can use a DI straight in and bypass the amps EQ section?

I did the C4 mod too, surprising amount of difference to the pedal. I also did the Ruetz mod on my Rat and didn't like it so much. I ended up restoring the resistor and replacing the IC with the original. Sounds loads better now.

Warwick Corvettes have the J/J pickup layout. Probably not entirely what you were after but worth a look.

The Retro uses NOS circuit boards (the only Matamp that does I think), the GT1 uses Matamps turret style board which is much easier to build and repair, should something go wrong.

Stick it on the 'bay! I just sold my XL for about £45 less than I paid for it a year ago.

I met him (and his ace dog) when I took a guitar in for some work. He's a great guy and I was in awe of his workshop. Makes me wish I tried a little harder at woodwork when I was in school! A friend also owns 2 Shuker basses, one of which I've played. It was a really beautiful instrument. I'm pretty sure it's the 2nd one down on the custom page of his site. There can't be that many 7 string Shuker basses like that with fretboard LEDs.

The Jaco or the other ones being discussed? If you're willing to spend time and cash modding them I reckon they're good for the money. Mine is gathering dust at the moment sadly.

There's not enough space in the cavity for 2 pots so it's just got volume at the moment. The pickups also need raising as they're way too far from the strings. I'm considering a de-fret for tonal variation and for fun.

Does it have a headphone out? A dodgy connection there can lead to volume issues as the amp keeps flicking between speaker and headphone out, assuming plugging 'phones in cuts the speaker off. A quick blast of contact cleaner might help there before you open her up and fire up the soldering iron. My old valvestate combo had a similar problem that a good thwack would sort out. Turned out to be the above and the big capacitors inside becoming loose and needing re-seating/gluing.

I too have an old bubinga natural finish 5 string. Ripped out the active electronics and put a pair of Kent Armstrongs in there. It's not a bad bass, if not great.

And yeah, it weighs a ton. We used to do 6 hour band practices 2 nights in a row which was torture towards the end.

Children of Dune is a great novel, a fantastic end to the trilogy. Admittedly, God Emperor of Dune is a little bit long-winded, and this is where most people get lost and give up. I've had the same pre-amp tubes in my Matamp for about 2 years and they're still going strong. Still, I assume they heat up and could potentially crack so it's probably wise to carry some spares around. I'm a fan of JJ tubes but they're pretty cheap so get a few and try them out to see what suits.

I'll try the next 3 books too, I have a pretty high boredom threshold so a bit of meandering in the middle shouldn't put me off.

You might as well keep some spares although they've don't blow like power tubes in my experience. It should be pretty bulletproof.

I'm partway through Children of Dune, heard the ones after weren't great. Someone needs to make a really good film out of Dune! The David Lynch one is impossible if you've not read the book.

If I were taking my frets to make my bass a fretless, would I need to fill the gaps in? I've seen guides on the net that say yes and no. I don't want to damage the neck, nor do I want to irreversibly wood fill the gaps unless I had to.
