1. Seems they have been superseeded by the sterling by musicman range (terribly confusing name!). Pricier those but supposedly great quality. But worth bearing in mind that the various upgrades above would propel the price of the bass to a similar range.

2. Don't know about the finish, I've had a gloss one for 5 years without issue though mine is korean made.
I would advise giving the body a quick wipe to get rid of any acid left on it.

Almost certain a ground wire has come loose, it will be fairly obvious if you open it up at the back if there is a loose wire a soldering iron or tech should sort it out.

3. Try swapping the wiring for one of the pickups round.

I'm having a phase problem at the moment on some wizard pickups and Andy is very keen to help so get in touch with him. If it was fine before the preamp add I would be surprised if just swapping the wires round doesn't work

4. if it feels nice then it will catapult it in to a very high end bass. Although many would argue just buying a £1000 bass new would be better value.
Aftermarket stuff can get a bit pricey and poor value when you add it all up, law of diminishing returns and all.

Pickups are the best upgrade and seeing as they a massive factor in the sound of the bass often worth it, though £210 is not cheap considering I could buy a a complete bass for that. A £100+ bridge is probably not going to make anywhere near the amount of difference as the pickups.

5. aha! I learned this last year! Thought it would come to some use

The ear/brain works in a very weird way, you can actual hear a fundamental even if it is not physically present! pitch is not frequency, it's perceived frequency :) .

If you take a sound sample, and actually filter the fundamental you still hear it

6. bleugh, opened up again to have a look and a couple connections (ground and one from the j pickup) came off. Time for a pro to take over I think, was going to take it in for a setup anyway. I had a job soldering for 6 weeks once but can't figure out what is supposed to go where, even with a diagram. 7. I can make my g&l -2000 sound pbass ish

If i solo the neck pickup and switch to series it sounds a bit like a pbass. a bit thicker but it has the series wiring tone shaping.

I think a sterling has a series switch so you might be able to a similar effect, but not the other way round! and not with stingray which is wired in series.

8. might give that a try.

spotted this thread too. (easy to find if you have the right keywords!)

the p pickup does actually buzz a bit so maybe I would also need to try the other suggested fix of swapping the polarities of the top half of the coil.

I'm more worried about doing it myself simply out of fear of getting solder on the bass itself (it's white :)) or something stupid like that rather than messing up the circuit.
I will have a look for sure though.

9. Hmm, maybe the wiring is not quite correct.

http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...ickup&st=20

in fact my aerodyne gets discussed in that topic!...

"You need to reverse the wiring on the neck pickup, I had the same problem when I first fitted Wizards to my Aerodyne."

I don't mind opening up to have a look but I'd be a bit wary of screwing around with the wiring unless I knew exactly what I was doing.

10. Been having a play with my new Aerodyne Jazz and have noticed something a bit weird.

The pickups (Wizards) soloed have even volume across the strings but have a bit of different tone, the D and G strings are more "punchy" and the E and A are sort of "ringy chorusy". After playing acoustically I put this largely down to the strings which are steels and I always use nickels, the E and A have a lot of ring whilst the D and G sound similar to the sorts of nickels I usually use .

When turning up both to get that sort of scooped jazz bass sound the top two strings have a slight drop in volume for the top two strings (expected I believe)bottom strings seem to have a more significant volume drop .

Seeing as with pickups soloed the volume is seemingly even I can't put it down to pickup placement/level the only thing I can come up with is that the scoop is affecting the overall volume or "perceived volume" more on the bottom two strings than the top two.

Is that a "reasonable" guess?

11.
What about the Aerodyne? I've not weighed the two of mine to compare, but the Aerodyne has less wood.
I just got an aerodyne yesertday. Seems to be lighter than other jazz basses. Less wood and it's lighter basswood at that. Wouldn't call it very light though.

12. if you are a bit of a newby I wouldn't recommend such a high guage unless you have crazy strong fingers.

normal 45-105 should be fine.

I would also recommend a nickel set, it's personal preference for everyone but personally i can't stand steel because of the coarse feel and excessively bright sound.

D'addario nickels are good value. as are these
