  1. I really liked both. I remember the KSD (I tried the 70's one) playing very nicely. It had a jazz bass sound but what surprisingly powerful. I imagine it's quite similar to a marcus miller jazz. Very good neck, don't remember it being particularly heavy and would have bought one if it was a bit cheaper.

The G&L is a different animal. The neck is beefier, I find this type of neck very comfortable, but perhaps not as "quick" as a jazz neck. Not sure whether you mean the tribute versions or USA but they are nearly identical basses. See my review about the G&L.

Although the KSD was very nice it was a little overpriced, not much, just a bit.

  2. Thanks :)
Those soundclips sound like they've been done with a compressor, something that could potentially help the sound.
I'm taking the bass to be set up properly sometime this week so hopefully it'll be playing nicer.

The pots don't seem like the best, so I might change them at some point in the future, it's not something that really bothers me though.

  3. Thanks for the link. Think I will definately defret it just an issue of DIY or shelling out a bit of cash. The Bass Gallery site says £70, which is a lot more than doing it by myself but at least I'd be guaranteed of a pro job and it's still quite a bit cheaper than buying a new bass.

  4. Someone on talkbass posted a picture of his new deluxe 5 string and it's supposedly great.

  5. I was thinking about splashing out on a cheap fretless bass, as fretless is something I want to be playing but I live off a student loan so big spending is not an option. However it occurred to me that I could just have my Ibanez GSR-200 defretted for what I imagine would be less money. Would anyone recommend for/against having this done. Are there any major disadvantages to having a defretted neck? I would go for a lined one anyway so that doesn't bother me

How much would it cost? I could probably do it myself but I know I would just screw it up. Images of a hacked up fretboard spring to mind.

    Cheers Olie

  6. Can anyone recommend a good affordable place for a set up in Bristol? I don't have a car so needs to be in walking distance (I live where all the university buildings are)? The action is a bit high and my attempts to lower it have resulted in buzz, I don't know if I need the frets sorted out, or maybe the nut. The intonation has drifted a bit too.

My other options are give it to my teacher in London who doesn't do the greatest setups but won't charge me much or take it to somewhere like the Bass Gallery where I could pay a lot of money for a very good job.

    Olie
