Thanks - that's what i figured. It would seem that it has indeed been buggered about with! Anyone got a circuit diagram for these things? - if not I might just re-wire the pups from scratch....
OK - update time.... I have re-wired the pups using a simple JB type circuit, and guess what? - it's exactly the same The guitar is fitted with EMG select pickups which are, I think, the originals. They obviously don't require power, as they sound good passively and have only hot & ground connections. I am still unable to turn the output off using the volume pots - the bass is fitted with standard pots (I think they are 500k) Could it be that these pups require a different impedance control circuit? I have trawled the EMG site but found nothing really helpful. I'm sure one of you guys out there has the answer!

I'm now so short of space that this has to go! Will consider P/X for Rickie or WHY? This is a great instrument, and would be an ideal step up for an improver Take a look: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=57679&hl=

"I didn't change anything except my cab when I started to experience feedback. That particular piece of equipment emphasises a frequency that causes feedback" There you are then - dial it out with a graphic! "We've probably all played gigs on electric or upright where a certain note or frequency seems to boom out. Some kind of natural resonating frequency of a room, a stage, a pa, or an amp. String instruments themselves often have wolfnotes." See above..... "Good instrument doesn't equal good amplified tone! Equally a good amp can flatter a poor instrument" Agreed.
-
There seems to be a lot of talk about what equipment "gives" feedback. IMHO you have to start with the instrument's individual characteristics, the dynamics of the pickup system being used and THEN worry about the amp - at the end of the day it will only be able to process the signal fed to it. I have always been able to obtain a satisfactory sound by using a good graphic eq - and I wouldn't dream of amplifying my basses without one! For sure, some amps are better, tonally, for DB - but I think what you shove into them is important too!

For what it's worth, I've been using a Polytone Mini-Brute through a Boss graphic eq for about 20 years now. I know the gear is way "out of date" - but the fact remains that it sounds great (using an Underwood pickup) If I need more Oomph I use a 15" cab. If you look around you can get this gear. Why pay more?

I just bought a pre-owned Hohner "Jack" and really quite like it - but I think someone has had their sticky fingers in the electronics 'cos I can't work out what the controls do. The major problem is that it is not possible to turn the output off using the knobs - I figure that the co-axial control is for the active tone circuit (which doesn't interest me) with the two single pots controlling.......what? - they both do something but seem to alter tone, not volume. Anyone out there got one of these, and can explain what it should be doing? Cheers!
-
There ya go then! I knew someone would know. Particularly interesting about the frequency thing, that may explain why it wasn't so effective with my string bass... If I ever find it I might have a look at adjusting it. Cheers chaps!

I keep reading references to Orange Squeezer "clones" on the forum. I guess that the original units must have been considered good for someone to emulate them. I used one years ago (and probably still have it somewhere) but didn't think it was that special. Were there different models available, and what made them so good - or was it just that they were the only units around at the time? There's probably someone who can give me the whole history, chapter and verse.....

Hi Guys/Guyesses (well - how would you spell it?) Thought I would say hello as I don't want my first post to be in the FS section! At 52 i guess i'm on the older side compared with all the young blood out there - but still playin'..... I live in the South West and use string bass for jazz/folk and a P-bass for rock and y'know what - in all these years I never thought of joining a forum! Anyway, nice to be here! Graham.
