Well I took the 5-string to last night's rehearsal, having gone through all the songs on our list looking for ways to use it.

I'm on the same journey as you. Had it a couple of weeks and I'm gelling with it, easier to play than I expected a five to be.

Got it for one particular band and running through the set before next weeks rehearsal I found the only one i needed a 5 for was Elton Johns I'm still standing if I wanted to play it correctly cos' of the Eb.

I quite like it and I'm going to give it a go with one of my bands but I couldn't honestly say I needed it if you know what I mean ?

Sorry, but it sounds to me like you're planning to spend so much on this bass that maybe you should have bought something different in the first place.

Not if I can help it Chris, new strings are just a running cost, the rest is a maybe but as someone said I need to play around with it for bit as I’ve only used it at home not in a rehearsal so in all honesty I don’t actually know how it’ll perform. Neck dive is slight and sorted a bit with a leather strap but I fear that may become an issue.

Really just wondering if anyone’s had remarkable results swapping pickups etc but I run my VM jazz stock and don’t feel the need to alter anything so a VM 5 p may be fine just as it is.

  3. Just swapped a spare VM Jazz for a 5 string VM P bass.

What gauge strings can I get way with ? Lighter the better but I don't want a useless B string.

What strings should I give a go ?

It's got a bit of neck dive so reasonably priced lighter tuners may be a consideration, any suggestions ?

Can I get a black pickguard for it ?

Is my singer right saying "that goes so low only trees can hear it ?" 🤣

Is it worth chucking a better wiring harness on it (it's had a push pull kill switch fitted on the vol which I quite like) and maybe changing the pickups or am I asking to much of what I've got to build on ?

Good points . I suppose I just get annoyed at the exploitation. And yes - if you don’t do it , somebody else will . Sooner or later , gig or no gig , you have to put a value on what you have to offer .

Of course you do. To be honest must businesses would have no problem paying a band 400 quid if they brought an extra 800 quid profit in. Not too sure on the exploitation you allude to but it sucks that we’re not paid as much as plumbers 🤣

  5. The last time I worked for 30 quid I was the house bass player in a jam night. I could leave a spare combo at the gig and walk there with my bass on my back. I got to play out of my comfort zone, have a couple of pints and walk home it was that close.

Well worth it. Would I get in my car and travel for that  ? No.

After nearly a year the landlord bagged it cos' it didn't make enough extra profit to cover the bands 120 quid.

I think we often over estimate our worth to the bottom line business situation to be honest
