what sort of budget are you looking at? if you've got the funds, the TecAmp Puma comes in a nice 500w offering (@4ohms). I tend to like 4-band eq offerings (and/or parametric). i'm not sure how available things are in your area, but I like my Genz 9.0 Shuttle, so a used 6.2 might be a nice option. I've heard that the GK can get you in the tone region of Mesa amps, if that is what you are going for. i'm not a huge fan of the ToneHammer, but it will fit the 500w bill and fit in a gig bag.

    +1 for Tec-amp

  2. My back up rig for sale comprising of Barefaced compact which is a generation 2 and an Eden Highwayman WT500 both of which I have owned since new and have always worked faultlessly. The Eden produces around 500watts in bridged mode which is how I always used it with the compact and to my ears the two compliment each other very nicely. Both are unmarked but have been gigged. I will include a Roqsolid cover which is in good condition for the compact and a high quality lead suitable to run from the bridged output to the compact. If your anywhere near Portsmouth you are more than welcome to try it out I would definitely prefer pickup that doesn't mean I wont consider packing them for your courier to pick up I am also willing to travel within an hour of Portsmouth for a fuel donation.

  3. As you all will no doubt be aware Southbourne is the cultural centre of the universe with The Travelers joy being at its epicentre and as a result I and several other Johns (I kid you not)will be playing there this evening. This will be the third gig with my 16 year old son on drums and he just gets better each time he actually asked me if I thought I practised enough after the last one cheeky begger.
Be nice to see anyone who finds themselves bored, desperate, in need of reassurance that there are players out there with even less talent than themselves.

  4. Just fitted one of these in my old mex jazz this morning and I must say it sounds pretty damn good :D I think I have sussed the controls but thought I would check the web site to see but they only show stuff for the latest incarnation the Pro jz which is different and there are no useable contact details <_< so does anybody have or know where I can get a copy of any info on the JZ I already have the installation details.
    Cheers

Tecamp....I have a Tecamp Puma 350 head and i've had no volume issues at any gig i've played at. It's small and incredibly lightweight at just 2.4kg (5.3lbs). Running it at 4 ohms (like I do) you get 350w and if you use 8ohms it's 250w. Secondhand prices are easily within your budget. They sound excellent as well. Here's mine.......

Also, I'd like to upgrade the bridge - I don't want anything 'fancy' like hipshot etc - just a decent, solid, reliable bridge. Any pointers there?

    Thanks all!

Tried a shaller 3d on my mex jazz hated it didn't sound like a jazz anymore didn't sound like anything so sold it and bought a Babicz bridge and its perfect sustain forever and more focused but still a jazz odd thing is the guy who bought the Shaller uses them all the time and the basses he's fitted them too including a jazz sound really good and I get the impression on here that the Babicz is a bit of a marmite job so unfortunately its a bit suck it and see I think

Try raising the pickups, so the magnets are closer to the strings.

on my old mex jazz I did the opposite and lowered the pickups ie moved them away from the strings resulting in an increase in bottom end and an increase in output, I tried this after some research into how different pickups work and reading that the shape of the magnetic field generated by the pickup needs to be taken into consideration when deciding how close to the strings to place the pickups. For those clever chaps that can prove im talking rubbish all I can say is it worked very effectively for me
