Wanted Underwood or similar for high volume gigs
bassadder replied to bassadder's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
Interesting, it wouldn't work on this gig by the sounds of it. I think I'm going to use an Underwood in to my Avalon U5 and then in to my DB751 with a 2 x 12 should be me plenty of volume to here myself, I had in the past used a Mark Bass 1x15 combo but it was too boomy on loud gigs. I still love the Acoustic Image for anything else how does the Big e 45 compare to a Ten2 Combo? Cheers Laurence -

Thanks for all the advice, I do have in-ears but I find way to wierd to try and pitch with things in my ears doesn't feel right at all, TPJ thanks for the offer you have a PM, Bassace that's great news I remember using one at one time and thinking it was good plus Mr Holland and Mats Eilersten use them. Clarky I have Velvet Animas on my bass so Magnetics are out, but I have a question for bith you and Roger what's the Big E 4X5 like? Many thanks again Laurence -
Hi Guys Turns out this one particular gig I'm doing is very loud in fact I can't hear a thing on stage from my bass, so I won't to experiment with an Underwood or something similar in to my Avalon U5 and Aguilar Rig can anyone help. Essentially once the drums and guitar kick in I can't even hear the keyboard player's amp and my intonation goes to **it, I just heard a recording back and it's totally embarrassing I sound terrible. I could easily do it on electric bass problem solved but the band really want the look of the double bass so it's down to me to solve my own monitoring issues. Can anyone helpor offer advice Cheers Laurence

Hi Ebenzer It's no different from a standard J-Retro 01 in terms of the it looks (though it doesn't have the passive tone like a normal Maruc), the real difference being the way it's voiced I can get the frequency ranges for you if you're interested. The sweepable mids are really useful once you get used to them, as you know every room you play in has different characteristics and when you struggle to hear the bass the mid range pots come to the rescue, it's helped me out dozens of times. The circuit won't really help with dead spots per say, adding more back pickup and tweaking the mid range helps though. Hope that helps. Laurence -

Hi Guys I thought I would share the photo's of these pickups now they are fitted on my bass as they aren't very common on this forum. I've used the Bassbalseriet Studio II a lot it's an very interesting pickup as it has a pre-amp in the XLR that needs to be phantom powered. The pickup itself sounds pretty good and believe it or not can actually be tuned in the hole by using a sort of darning needle which you insert in to the hole and turn the brass part of the pickup which alters the sound. It's a rather hot pickup and when I had it fitted it was fine with my Acoustic Image Ten2 but I now use my old Coda R (not many gigs these days) and had to get an -10db in line attenuator which really helps with over loading the pre-amp and 5" driver. Sound very good recorded too. The Schertler Stat-B Vintage is a pickup I always wanted to try as it's a copy of the original one Charlie Haden and Barry Guy use. I've only just had it fitted and this needs the Schertler pre-amp again to use it my version is the older Acoustic Pre-amp which I like they now have something called a Yellow Blender available in 1 and 2 channel apparently Chris Lawrence the excellent UK bassist now uses. I haven't had a chance to gig it yet but it sounds good through my Coda R. You can use the Stat-B Vinatge direct in to the new Schertler La Faro double bass combo, which I happen to have here at Overwater Basses/Acoustic Image Europe on demo. Incidentally if anyone is interested in trying any of this stuff let me know and you can try pickups on my bass here at the workshop. Cheers Laurence

Hi Guys I selling my Sonic blue J-Series Classic Custom, I have 2 of them and love them both to bits but the music I'm now playing in our wedding/function band has dictated I need to use a 5 string, though I tried to avoid it as long as I can I just can't do it on a 4 string even with a de-tuner. So I need raise funds for a 34" scale J-Series 5 (I have a Yamaha BB5000A I got for a steal which will do for now though it is rather heavy). Obviously this bass has been gigged a lot and has a few dents and marks I would say it's 7 out of 10 condition wise hence the above price (my red bass is battered to hell and is almost a relic now and I couldn't sell it) Spec is as follows:- 1 piece seasoned flamed Maple neck. Rosewood board with Rosewood binding and Mother of Pearl block inlays with Sonic Blue headstock 2 Piece medium weight Alder body in Sonic Blue Hipshot Ultralite 1/2 Lollipop machine heads and De-tuner Hipshot B Style bridge in alumimium 19mm spacing J-Retro Marcus Miller 3 pot circuit with custom flat response DiMazio Ultra Pickups Schaller Strap Locks Hiscox case RRP on this bass is now £ 2775.00 £ 1295.00 and ONO would be consider trades for a Status SII 5 string 80's bass (the stages are getting smaller and the singer is worried I'll hit him in the face with my head stock) If you have any questions just let me know. Many thanks Laurence
