1. For sale, my beloved vintage 1975 Jazz Bass!

Maple board, black body, black scratchplate. Tight neck pocket, ludicrously stable neck, punchy and powerful pickups, this is one of the good 70s Jazz Basses!

Just want to list the non-original/negative elements straightaway:

It's had a refret by the Bass Gallery in Camden. Excellent job, which has retained the vintage tint, and the bass currently has a low action with no fret buzz!

The pickups have been wax-potted by Bare Knuckle. All original aside from that though, and the BK guys tested them and reported absolutely no issues!

There's a small crack just under the E tuner (visible in photos). This has been professionally glued at some point though, and it's very solid and will not cause any problems!

It's a bit heavy at 12lbs/5.4kg
Aside from that, it's all original and sounds incredible!!

I've removed the original metalwork/ashtrays and thumbrest, but these are included. I will also include an excellent condition Hiscox hardcase!

I'm looking for £1650 for this beauty, which will include fully insured UK shipping. Alternatively, I'm happy for anyone to collect from me in North-West/Central London, in which case I'll let it go for £1600!

Absolutely NO TRADES, thanks. I've bought something expensive, so need to recoup some cash!

    Any questions, let me know

A B3K is not a replacement for a RAT, it's much less fizzy
Ha! Are you serious!?...I've had two B3Ks, and it was the fizziness of the distortion that I couldn't stand.

My COG TK-421 (RAT clone) is not in the least bit fizzy.

got to be the TK421x from COG for me - I've always had a hankering for a RAT based pedal, and after trying most of the popular ones (fuzzrocious, idiot box, not to mention the original RAT) the COG just sounds right. It's the core tone for my new band :)
Good call, and totally agreed (although I got mine in 2014...). It's the perfect RAT!

I really do need to try that one!!
Just do yourself a favour, sell your Rat Tail and order one now. You can thank me later.

Have a look at strymon stuff really nice delays
The Strymon stuff is great! I've got the El Capistan but it does colour your sound, even at the mildest settings, as it's based on a tape echo.

They recently released the DIG which looks great for a clean, non-coloured digital delay! Bit pricey though...

I still have my Nova Delay (as a backup), and I reckon it sounds pretty perfect for what you're after. You'll probably be able to pick up a used one at a decent price too. I got mine for £100 off Gumtree.

Cheers for the tips. I see everyone say they should go as early as possible in a chain but see a lot of people use them after dirt, so I'm going to try a lot of combinations before I decide where to put it.
If you use the Microsynth after (and with) dirt, the filter sweeps will be more intense, kinda like how a wah pedal works before/after dirt...Like people say though, this will probably affect the tracking of the sub voice. Personally I always use octaver/harmoniser > dirt > microsynth.

Jon uses a Tech 21 Bass XXL for this live, and with his ashdown roaring gets pretty close!

Speaking of which I've been trying to find a Bass XXL for ages so if anyone has one for sale... hah!
They had one downstairs in the Bass Gallery last time I was there, maybe worth a call?

You don't need to take the neck off to adjust a heel truss rod. Just loosen the screws off enough to angle the nut out the pocket.
Or just buy a Cruztools truss rod driver, and you won't ever have to take the neck off again (unless you need photos of the stamps, etc)!

Don't get the jazz neck - dive problem...I've had six so far, and never experienced this. Most have been too body - heavy if anything!

My personal bugbear is Spector bridges - no screws to adjust, wobbling around on two legs...Really difficult to set up. I've had two (euro and Kramer-era US) and loved the sound, but this was a major contributer to me selling them!

  8. Taking the neck off will be the true test. Should have small date stamp on the body socket, and big stamp on the neck end, e.g. 7NOV62A. Also good to check that the solder under the pickups and control panel is original.

If this all checks out, I'll give you £100 for it! ;-)

Yes Martin certainly knows what he's doing... I've always used him for any work I need doing on basses and guitars.

You've only got to look at the basses he makes to see the standard of his workmanship.
Definitely, the Sei basses are truly works of art!

I was playing the Stingray before work today, and it's just sublime...I was on the verge of trading it in for a Classic Stingray, but it's been given a new lease of life and is certainly a keeper now! :)

  10. Just thought I should give a shout-out here to The Bass Gallery, Camden, for anyone looking to get their vintage basses (especially maple fretboards) refretted.

I've had my 79 Stingray and 75 Jazz Bass in over the last couple of months, and Martin and John have done a fantastic job on them! They've taken the time to assess the necks and remove any unevenness. The varnishing is done incredibly well, keeping the vintage tint to not look out of place, but I now have what essentially feels like a new neck on both basses!

Amazing job, and would thoroughly recommend for anyone looking to have this important work undertaken...Pics to follow (when I get chance! ;-)).

  11. Hmmm, be wary that the "looper" doesn't quite work the same as the Ditto, etc, and requires some experimentation...You'll see what I mean!

Awesome echo though, and one of my essentials. Whack up the "wow and flutter" straightaway and you'll be in heaven! ☺

Fender have even used maple as the body for the bass just like Steves which was used back in the 70s by Fender.
Pretty sure Fender only used ash and the odd bit of alder for body wood in the 70s, never come across a maple - bodied P or J from that decade...
