At the risk of being the 5th person with recommendations 9 and 10, I play melodic metal originals using a standard tuned 5 and favour this method..

    - Use a compact pedalboard with a preamp at the end to get the DI tone you want to send to the PA, rather than a particular amp/cab

    - Just take the pedalboard if good foldback or full backline is provided by the venue (or you use IEMs - I personally don't)

    - Get a simple, light, workhorse of an amp that just makes the pedalboard output loud (mine's a Markbass Nano 2 - highly recommend it)

    - Use the amp EQ to keep the stage sounding how you need it, knowing it can't inadvertently affect the FoH DI

    - Use whatever cab is provided by a venue or headline band, as it'll probably be fine for stage monitoring and you don't have to move it

    - Get a cab based mostly on the weight you can stand to move and the value you can stand to lend (mine's a Barefaced Two10 - my wallet is healthier than my neck/back)

    - If you need two cabs then get two the same, and if you like to keep your gear clean and presentable in metal venues then avoid carpeted cabs

Of course, my free advice is worth every penny you paid, but all the very best of luck with the new band and the gear search! 🙂

I think this is the best way to look at things.

    What’s the budget?

There's no tube in the original Digbeth models - the second channel has tube-style drive but is solid state. This isn't a criticism though - they sound really good!

I wonder if the channel is any different on this then, or whether it’s just a name change.

  3. The Digbeth range has been around for a few years now and included a combo and a couple of heads, all with a ‘tube’ emulation pre-amp alongside a Class D power section.

However, they announced a couple of days a new subrange called Digbeth ‘Foundry’, kind of based on the mantra from their recent Lionheart Foundry guitar amps.

In short, they set out to make inexpensive solid-state amps that do what they say on the tin without any bells and whistles or relying on valves. As such, the ‘tube’ channel of the normal Digbeth models (which will remain in production) is renamed/replaced on foundry models with a footswitchable solidstate ‘drive’ channel instead.

The control section is also simplified for a modern user (addition of a master volume too) to make it more accessible.

    The new Foundry products:

    -30w 8” Combo: £169

    -50w 10” Combo: £249

    -100w 12” Combo: £339

    -200w 15” Combo: £449

    -200w Head: £299

    An intriguing range of additions!

I dig the idea, their sound, and the control layout, so have just pulled the trigger on the head after teetering between a few options from other companies. This foundry line seems to hit the spot just right!

    First Bass Owned: Shine 845
    'Go To' Bass: Jazz Bass
    'Your' Bass: Thunderbird

and so I guess I should give this an update some years later!:

First: Well, that one hasn’t changed

    Go To: Sandberg VM4

    Your: Also, Sandberg VM4

(14 years later, I only own two basses. The Shine for nostalgia purposes, and the VM4!)

  5. Thirteen years later I’ve started getting reply notifications all of a sudden!

When I created this thread in 2011 I didn’t expect it to still be alive in 2025.

I did think about adding condenser but you are still the exception for vocal mics on stage.

Ultimately, a condenser would still generally be cardioid or super/hypercardioid anyway, so you wouldn’t need a third option on the poll.

A festival stage manager has asked me what frequency I'd like for my unit. Its a channel 38 Sennheiser G4. He's asking because he's got a number of mics on that channel. I've gone back to him asking him to tell me what to use, does that make the most sense?

Yes, just tell him what band your unit operates on and ask for an allocation. I doubt they’d ask for your licence but if you have a copy to present that’d be handy just in case.

Posted without adding any specs yesterday feels very rude to the very knowledgeable bass community lol so it’s a bass head at 4 ohms and the cab is 8 ohms so another same cab slaved on would be ok ? That’s the last question I promise 😎🎸

Yes, 2x cabs of 8 ohm impedance will present a 4 ohm load to your head. If your head is 4 ohm rated (as you say) then you’ll be spot on.
