Have you tried the bass in passive mode and rolled the tone off a bit?  I have a California II Central with the Sandberg 3-band EQ which I imagine is what is fitted onto your Basic and that has the volume pull up for passive and the treble control then acts as the tone knob.  I find that really warms up the tone..

Hmm.. I've tried many combinations.. but it still doesn't "warm" enough.. ..I know that there are so many factors in the equation.. head, cab etc makes so much difference.. I didn't know that the treble control acts as tone ..I though in passive.. the tone knobs are inactive..? 🧐

  2. I have a Sandberg basic 5 string which I like the feel of but the original sound I found a little 'hard' & lacking warmth.. So, being a fan of Aguilar, I decided to swap the pup for the Aguilar MM style one.. result, slightly warmer, bit growly.. an improvement overall.. but no cigar as yet..

    Any advice or recommendations?

Do not get the peavey microbass. They are truly bad, in that they sound like a 90s alarm clock in fidelity or lack of.

And also avoid the vox pathfinder bass amp. As that is truly awful in the same vain.

I think a combo amp with a 10 inch speaker would be better than any with an 8 inch as they just reproduce bass better. This is not always true as there some great, but normally much more expensive combos with small speakers. But in a inexpensive combo I feel getting a larger combo with 10, 12 or even 15 is better even at modest volumes.

If your tone is bad because of the amp, at the very get go, then it's not very inspiring.

I disagree.. Peavey gear is generally well made & i use a microbass combo as a practice amp.. I love it! .. it's very subjective this! ... We all experience things differently

  4. Do we really need thousands of watts in the realistic world of actual gigs? I have never understood why that is important..

A Volvo V40 has the same engine as a Ford focus... So what!? .. I personally prefer the Swedish take on it though!

I like the original Elf head.. tried the 2x8 cab too..was really impressed, it's good, well made gear..

I have the Elf head as a back up...

I use Aguilar & GK as my main kit these days but very impressed with the TC elf stuff...

... incidentally, I have been fond of Peavey gear too have used much also over a 30 year+  career in bassing!

  5. Because prices fluctuate a lot I tend Google my strings of choice & scroll till I find  them at the cheapest price..

I paid £26 for a set of D'addario EXL 170-5's.. recently from an eBay place I used a while ago.... just googled them now & found them for £18.92 at a place called Stewmac! .. always worth a fresh search
