1. Hi Basschatters

During my tidy up I found a set of lightly used (no sign of wear and no indentations) Short Scale flats. I know I had them on my 'now sold Mustang' for a couple of months when I first got it but changed them out for La Bella Deep Talkin' flats when I had the Mustang re-finished and set up. I can't for the life of me remember what make they were and I have described them and asked the question on this site to see if anyone had an idea of the make, see: http://basschat.co.u...ring-are-these/

I had one reply and one PM from members. The reply to the post thinks they may be Status 45 - 109 and the PM thinks they may be Lakeland.

I can tell you that this afternoon I put them on my Gibson SG Shortie and they sounded OK, a little brighter than the La Bella set I had on until recently but I was hard pushed to even say that.

Anyway if anyone would like them I'd be happy to pop them in a Jiffy bag and post them to anywhere in the UK for £15.

Bank transfer or cash at pickup would be good, I don't have a PayPal account facility. I live in Borehamwood Hertfordshire.

  2. Thanks Roland Rock, you could very well be right. The string diameters compare well with the La Bella flats I have up for sale so 45 - 109 would be just about it.

One other member has PM'd me and thinks they may be Lakeland.

Just to be sure that they sounded OK I un-strung (not sure if that's even a word) the Gibson this afternoon and put them on to try them - I'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between them an the La Bella Deep Talkin' set - perhaps just a tad brighter.

Thanks for your thoughts though I'll put them in the for sale forum.

  3. Hi Basschatters

I have just taken a set of 'La Bella (Short Scale) Deep Talkin' Bass Strings (760FM)' strings off of my Gibson SG Bass and replaced them with D'Addario Semi-Flatwound strings. The La Bella strings have been on that bass for 6 months and have been played +/- 3 or 4 times at home so have no wear at all on them.

I'd be happy to post them (first class) anywhere in the UK in their original packaging sealed in a jiffy bag for the princely sum of[s] £25[/s] £20 (they cost me £36 + postage). Bank transfer or cash on collection only - sorry don't have PayPal.

    Any takers?

Edit: Sat. 29th March - Price dropped to £20

  4. Hi

I've been having a tidy up and found a (4) set of used (very lightly) Flat Wound Strings - Short Scale. I was going to offer them as a 'for sale' item on the site but have no idea (can't remember) what make they are. They compare favourably (string diameter) with a set of La Bella - Deep Talkin' Flat Wound Strings (049 069 089 109) that I am going to offer for sale. The difference between the 'unknown make' and the La Balla set is that they have a black cotton winding at the headstock end instead of the blue winding on the La Bella set and the winding spacing is very slightly wider i.e less windings per inch / cm than the La Bella set.

Any idea what make they could be????

  5. Hi Basschatters

(6th March 2015) I've managed to acquire another 32" Jap. Jazz, I now have two that I love - soooooo - the Gibson is now up for sale. The details etc are as below, nothings changed…………..

I've had the Bass from new since Jan 2010, it left the Gibson Factory in the USA in March 2009 - goodness only knows where it was in that 9 month period - shipping, warehousing etc I suppose. I've really looked after the bass and only ever had work done on it by luthiers. I had the Gibson 3 point bridge replaced with a Hipshot Super Tone bridge and a thumb rest fitted between the front and rear pickups, I've also had the strap buttons replaced with chrome strap locks. At the moment it has quite a low action with La Bella Medium Flat Wounds on, they are only 6 months old and have seen very little action due to my infatuation with the Jazz(s). There are no dings or scratches on the Bass and only a couple of scuffs on the case - see the pictures.

A full description / specification for the Gibson can be found at the following web link, loads of reviews and vidios are available on-line, knock yourselves out: http://www.gear4musi...CFY_HtAodCiwAkg

    Oggy :)

PS. The first picture shows the original Gibson 3 point bridge, strap buttons and case keys - they would of course be included as part of any trade / swap.

  6. I've just sold Mike (Pestie) my CIJ Mustang. I've dealt with Mike before and it's always gone like silk, no change this time.

The only embarrassing part of dealing with Mike is that if you sell him something the cash is in your bank well before the item leave you.

I hope we have more dealings Mike (Top Bloke)

You can put together a 32" bass with Warmoth stuff now.

    Hi Tom

I did have a look at doing just that. Only problem being that I wouldn't get the body scaled in proportion to the neck. I have had a P-Bass in the past and I can almost hide behind the body - it looks BIG hanging off me. That's why I'm so taken with the Jap 32" Jazz - the whole thing is scaled down in proportion.

I have a Dr Feelgood thing coming off and I'd have just loved to do the gig with a black P-Bass.

  8. Hi Ted

Sorry about the mix up, it was you that I bought the Fender strap from and John that I bought the harness from - must be an age thing:-)

Thanks for all the info on the 32" Precision, it''s confirmed a lot of hearsay.

When I started playing bass I had a standard 34" Fender P-Bass. I never really liked it as I found the 34" scale a bit of a stretch and the body size a tad on the large size for my 5' 6" frame. Over time I found that short scale basses were the answer so I ended up with a Mustang and a Gibson SG re-issue, until I found the 32" Jap Jazz that is. I did also try the Squire Custom Telebass, liked the sound and the 32" scale length but the body size was just to big for me.

From what I know now it looks as though the 32" P-Basses are in short supply so getting my hands on one isn't going to be easy. I have had the Mustang up for sale on the site but up to now no real interest, I'll have to re-visit my add and perhaps lower my expectations on price. I think I'll also put the Gibson up for sale and if either of them sell I'll try for a 32" P-Bass in the 'wanted' forum.

Thanks again for all your info.

  9. Hi John

Is the body scaled down in proportion to the neck? What would you say makes the sound 'less' than your 34" Precision, is it to do with the shorter scale length or just the quality of the pickups?

    Oggy (Tim)

PS. The harness you made for the Jazz works a treat - no more bunched volume.

I've been tempted by it a couple of times. For my daughter of course :-D
You know what AntLockyer - I've just had a crafty peep  If I had the cash I'd buy it and have the body re-finished in a colour something a tad less errrrrrr yup.

  11.
Fender Japan made 32" Squier Precisions in the early and mid 80s. And of course at the moment Squier is making these two which are supposedly great instruments and a lot of fun: http://www.fender.com/en-NL/squier/basses/telecaster-bass/
Hi LeftyJ

Yup, I had a Telecaster Bass a wee while ago and sold it on, the body was way to big for my liking. If the body had been scaled down I'd definitely have kept it, it had a great sound with flats on it.

I'll keep an eye out for one of those 32" Squier Precisions from the early and mid 80s you mentioned, do you know if it had the body scaled down in proportion?

That is very interesting. Especially the scaled down body aspect. I don't suppose you are able to weigh it, are you?

The Precision Lyte has a scaled down Precision body - more Strat sized. But 34" scale (and 22 frets, too) so not exactly what you asked about.

  13. Hi Guys

I've recently got my hands on a 32" Scale Jap Fender Jazz - I love it. It's not just the shorter neck scale that I love, it also has a scaled down body so that it looks in proportion.

I'm wondering if any of you basschaters know of a 32" scale P-Bass - do / did / has Fender (or anyone else for that matter) ever produced one ??

  14. I've just fitted a Jazz control nob kit bought, and built, by John - works a treat - no more 'bunched volume'.

Whole deal went as smooth as silk and John sorted me out pronto when I found I didn't have standard Jazz pickups.

Comms great and virtualy instant replys to PM - recommended.

  15. My thanks to GregBass, JapanAxe and neepheid for you advice, appreciated. It's been a decade or two since I had anything to do with PCB's or soldering irons, I come from an era of valve computers and very early OC44 and OC72 transistor circuits , anyone remember IN4148 diodes and 1/4W resistors .

I'll have a look on the Maplin site and see if I can get a wee bit of kit - Avo type measuring device and soldering iron + solder.

I do remember doing a bit at college, back in the late 60's / early 70's, using both Log and Lin potentiometers, during my apprenticeship. Could be a bit of fun to get back into a bit of tinkering.

    Thanks again Chaps.

  16. Hi Guys

I've recently bought a 32" Medium Scale Japanese Jazz Bass from another member of this site - I absolute love it  . To me it looks great, feels comfortable to play and sounds great - what more could I want?

Weeeeeellllllll - I have one minor gripe, not a train smash, that I hope some of you 'more techi' members will be able to advise / help me with.

Both of the Volume Pots only work for the last 20% of the full turn. The best way I can explain it is to liken the volume pot to the figures 1 - 10 on a clock face. With the marker at 1 there is no volume from the pickup (I'd expect this), I have to turn the pot up to 8 to get any signal / sound coming through, turning the pot from 8 - 10 gives a rapid rise in volume / signal. It's as though whatever the resistance value of the pot is between 8 - 10 should be what's applied to the pot on a gradual gradient from 1 - 10.

The above happens on both the front and rear pup volume control pots. The tone control pot behaves exactly as it should, with a gradual tone change right through the full turn.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks
