1.
It was at Newcastle uni you blockhead

Edit: Oh wait was it? Didn't i go with you? i cant remember now
I think you may be right, pretty sure we went together, one of many! Thinking about it, it was Newcastle, I am a blockhead. :)

  2.
I have a few nice basses, a 'ray, an overwater perception which I love, a USA jazz deluxe, and a homemade 5,
but every time I sit down to practice I automatically pick up the 'ray without thinking about it.
They all have their own character and I enjoy them all.
yet every time I turn on the amp I'm holding it again.
Anyone else have an favorite they don't realise?

    Andy
I know exactly what you mean, I have a couple of fairly nice basses, but when I was at home, everytime I sat down to practise, I found myself holding the piece o' crap peavey that I've had the longest! I think it's just whatever you get most comfortable on. Funny innit! :)

why are they all so wide?!? :)

I played a small biker festival once, it was really cool, there weren't lot of people there, but the ones we met were really nice -far too stoned for the experience to really count! (them, not me) -but nice none-the-less

  4. I've always been a finger player, I started out on double, so the idea of playing with a pick came to me after I'd already been playing for a few years. (at that point I was too much of a snob to even try it out, and now wish I'd made the effort!)

    A few things I'd recommend are;

playing around with scales, they have pretty much all the finger movements you're

playing along to cd's of tracks you know well

never using a metronome
*I realise the last one is a contentious topic, but I'm just giving my opinion, not looking for a debate on the subject.*

Good luck with it matey, it's really cool to see someone trying to expand their repertoire as it were. Ye knar?

    Dan

Reason for edit: realised my original post was not constructive in any way, shape, or form.

  5. I second all the "stay away from the BP100 talk" I couldn't for the life of me get a decent tone out of it, I'm fairly sure my DB is made of papier mache, which may not have helped, but it just sounded really thin and reedy all the time! Not kind of nice! I always ended up using a mic through the P.A. absolute waste'o'money!

  6. Run away!

Anyone ever heard of the charity Jesus house? No? Thought not, if a charity's so smallthat no-ones heard of it, they're not going to have a grand to be throwing around now are they! Particularly not for the inaugural event of a battle of the bands based in one city!

The whole thing stinks, and your band mates are stupid for not listening to you about it! (particularly since, as the bass player, you're the only one with any sense anyway)

The credibilty (not to mention self-respect) you will lose for writing songs you don't believe in, is worth more than anything you stand to gain.

  7. Just wondering if anyone knows who the bassist is on the album 'Spirit of the century' by the Blind Boys of Alabama? There's some really nice stuff on there, lots of gritty grindy tones. Oi loiks.

    Cheers

    Dan

  8.
Ali Friend and Danny Thompson are the guys who got me playing double bass after 17 years of electric bass. Recently though, I've been really getting into Paul Chambers on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue'

I can't let a mention of Danny Thompson pass without posting this absolute gem of a recording. His solo gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up every single time I hear it.

    Beautiful, thanks for that. :)

  9. A big fat plus 1 to everyone that's been mentioned, I'd like to add Larry Taylor, now playing with Tom Waits.

Also.... This maniac, Renaud Garcia-Fons, French-Catalan bass monster, saw him live playing the tracks from this album a few years ago, changed my life, and I mean that absolutely whole-heartedly.

Forgot to mention he plays a 5 string.
