The net really is just society in microcosm. Guy buys a budget bass and seems kinda ok with it until a light bulb goes on and he realizes he can pander to the herd better if he talks about how, yes, it’s dirt cheap, but if you think that’s a good idea for a beginner, you’re wrong…

Well that's one impressive "first post" on basschat! (not)

I wonder if attitudes to it would be different if they had put it in a metal case.

I think plastic is a thing though, you know quite a few aeroplanes are made largely of plastic these days...  Is that gonna stop you flying in one?

And has anyone experienced a B6 which cannot keep up with the rigours of gigging life? Just asking!

    Blimey!

I have no idea what year this was, early 90s?  Nothing on the internet.

Saw this show with a couple of mates - we were all Sweet fans as kids - it was just a truly harrowing freak show; Connolly got through it somehow, he was being heckled by a group of people.  It was just awful.

Yeah, my time with Les was through the mid 80s, great bloke, and mostly he would do a blinder of a show, but sometimes the drink would get the better of him.  We regularly gigged with The Sweet, The Glitter band (only a couple of times with Gary...  those were rather strange ones...), Rubettes, etc..

  4. I used Elixirs for years on all of my basses until I discovered the Markbass Longevo steels.  The coatings are incredibly thin and still super durable, without the gumminess and then shredding you get with Elixir, and they stay bright for easily as long as Elixir... they have a full tone across the fingerboard - no scoop in the mids....   If you can find them (Gary at Promenade Music will order you some, or Bass Direct), they're definitely with a go!

I'm going to guess that probably neither of the addresses are the home of this guy...  However, this appears to be the FB profile of his co-director...

    Ooh look, it's Karen Carpenter-alike!

The company trading addresses are 16 Leicester Road, which is shown as her address, and 1 Kensington Close...  His address?  Who knows...  I cannot believe the police cannot do something with this info with enough motivation...

I don't believe we have any Markbass representatives on the board....

    Si

Ahem.......!      I do some work with Markbass, I just don't shout about it!

I was lucky enough to be invited out to the MB58R launch in July.  The Richard Bona show afterwards was absolutely bleddy amazing!  The new cabinets, heads and combos are incredibly light, picking up the new head is more like picking up a paperback book, rather than a 500w bass head!  I personally currently use a pair of STD121hr cabs (which are slightly lighter than the NY121) with my Casa head... the replacement for these cabs will save me a total weight of 6kg, and I have placed an order, without hesitation, having heard them!

All the MB58R products are to be manufactured in Italy.  This is partly because the company is proudly Italian, but also because it considerably shortens the supply chain, optimise shipping costs and yes, saves the energy cost of shipping large quantities of wooden boxes halfway around the planet.  No greenwashing here, just sound business reasons and less heavy diesel oil being burned for the sake of us low enders

The new cabinets are constructed using a revolutionary injection moulded, dense and recyclable foam, which is incredibly strong, very light and with high performance acoustically.  There are three flavours to choose from - the "Energy" cabs have a tone signature similar to the current Standard and Traveler cabs, the "Pure" have a more hifi treble response (which can still be attenuated), akin to the Marcus Miller and Richard Bona cabs, and the "P" models are similar to "Energy", but have ceramic magnet speakers, which, because of the weight saving in the cabinet are still as light and in some cases even lighter than the current range wooden cabinets.

I understand that, ultimately the MB58 range will no doubt be the new Markbass standard, Marco's work has always been about innovation, but in the meantime there are understandably some very popular current models, which will continue to be made for the foreseeable future.  The new models should start to become available from late October, starting with the cabinets and heads, with the new combos following later in the year.  As a result, while the CMD121H has been marked on the MB website as officially discontinued, I am aware the UK distributor has secured some stock for the UK, so it'll be around for a good while yet!

Thats about all I know for now, but if I hear more I will happily share!

I have been asked to help with an Expo day at Absolute Music on 1st October, and I believe they are hoping this will be the UK debut of the new cabs and heads...

  7. Clearly Paypal could do more if they could be bothered, and so could the fraud squad. However, I think the takeaway from this thread is, unless I can pay when I collect (if I have it in my hands then at that point cash or even PPF&F is absolutely fine) or using a legitimate business paypal or other payment platform, then its too good to be true, so walk away and don't be scammed. Sorry of course to those who have fallen for this, we all love a good deal but need to decide if we can afford to lose the money when it goes bad. 😡

Gigged with it in memory mode on Saturday.

I was bedeviled by the same problem I have whenever I use preprogrammed effects patches.

No matter how assiduously I set them up at home, get on stage and there are glaring differences in volume between the patches, and what sounds amazing at home seldom sounds great live.

Nothing wrong with the unit just my cack handed inability to program stuff properly.

As Jimfist says, it'll never sound the same at home or through headphones than it does live at gig volume!  That applies to all/any effects I have ever used...

By the way, you may all be interested to know Zoom have just released a new IR pack from Jensen!

The Police do. It just needs the police to wake up and recognise that a very active fraudster is ripping people off right, left and centre and then take action. The problem is that one instance of this chap’s actions is insignificant and on its own doesn’t trigger any action. However the cumulative effect is significant and if enough examples can be gathered they may be more motivated to take action.

Really?  Sadly EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK they seem to reinforce the message, "just don't pay that way in the first place if you are unsure of the recipient".

they probably won't get your money back, but it doesn't stop the police trying to investigate fraudsters though.....

SURELY A PAYPAL EMAIL CAN BE FOLLOWED BY AUTHORITIES TO AN ACTUAL BANK ACCOUNT TO AN ACTUAL KNOBHEAD?

I'm sure the answer must be yes, but PayPal have a challenge here, and won't want to make that easy. While a fraudulent seller is definitely leading buyers to pay this way, using "friends and family" for purchases is surely a breach of their service agreement in which the victim is sadly made complicit. So, they have zero motivation to investigate, as it would imply legitimate use and a requirement for payer/buyer protection. As far as I can see, the only obvious benefit to PayPal to facilitate "friends and family" is to generate useage, awareness, traffic and transactions, as (unless I'm being dumb here) it has no direct income value. They'd probably argue they have no responsibility to provide fraud protection and are more likely to reinforce what its misuse means, or maybe simply stop offering the service. Whether anyone has the power to force PayPal to reveal the attached bank account to a PayPal account is a completely different matter....

Will the B6 allow use of 3rd party IRs?

It has 120 IR slots, of which 36 are pre populated with factory IRs....  But these can be overwritten!

..so the big guns  in the UK like Andertons, PMT etc with the buying power to strike major deals with manufacturers and wholesalers are going to end up running the market....

What, you mean like Thomann and Amazon have been doing for the last 4-5 years...?  I'd love to know how many here actually have the first idea what a viable profit margin in retail is considered to be, and what most actually make as a living after paying the bills, compared to say, 20 years ago?  Did you feel ripped off then too?

Price fixing has been discussed on Basschat before, there's a massive difference between price fixing and maintaining viable margin to survive.  As I've said before, I'd rather pay more for good service.

When I was a salesman 30 years ago, I remember someone saying to me "you have to stay in business, so I don't begrudge you a profit, its just the percentage that matters to me...  Good attitude.  Always respected that man, and we did business for a long time after that discussion.

Bricks and mortar shops are expensive to run,  The guys who are moving off the high street to industrial units have a better chance without high street rates, but it's still close.  I suspect very few UK music shop owners drive posh cars or own boats or 2nd homes in Salcombe...  Even if they did I wouldn't begrudge them that as long as I am getting great service and a fair deal, because they're gonna have to be working pretty long hours to achieve it...
