  1. Mayones craftsmanship is the best out there. Seriously. My Jabba is flawless, super nice to play, but sounded horrible. I don’t know if it was the Delano’s or Mayos own 3 band preamp. The blend was more like a 3 way switch (like most preamps) and the passive tone did nothing until the last 2mm of knob travel. And then it sounded weirdly honky. The chosen bass mid and treble frequencies were terrible.
The bass just wasn’t getting played.

So the pickups and preamp were removed and I installed Bartolini B-Axis pickups and East Uni Pre. The difference is staggering. It sounds great with any setting. And this is the first preamp where the blend does just that. Those Barts are seriously nice!

No, I meant I went to their website to have a look, they have a ton of basses there, I was wondering if that was just all their stores, or stock, or they actually have all those instruments in the store.

oh Gotcha. They have a fraction of what's on their site. But they did have a 5HH, 4H, BFR Fretless. Apparently the wait time for an Ernie Ball order is horrendous, due to the appocolypse.

@Chopthebass you should have asked to try a John Myung signature Bongo - six strings on the same neck profile 😬 he seems to have no problem with the design even with 6 strings.

Seriously, which shop did you try the new  'Classic 5HH' in? I might be interested!!!

Shop is Long and McQuade in Calgary

  4. I was set on buying a new Classic 5HH and went to try on last Saturday. I didn't get as far as plugging in because the G string kept rolling off the edge of the frets. Looking at the D string it wasn't exactly central to the fretboard dots. The usual fix is to slacken neck bolts and move it, then re-tighten. But there was zero play. So can't comment on weak G string! But can comment on a crap G string!

There lots online from other Forums about this. People are saying its 'your technique' . That's rubbish. Just a poorly designed neck, poorly assembled. Shame though. I was set to buy it until I saw it!

Bought a 2020 CV Precision in black just before lockdown. The shop had a brown one and a black one - tried both and the black one was slightly sweeter. There was no one-thing that I could note was better about the black one, just the feel in the hands and the sound. Try before you buy is the best bet. Quality is great, although I am tempted to give in and have it set up professionally. I can't quite get it buttery smooth, and it may need a bit of fretwork from someone more skilled than I. Still, for £339 I would gig this bass happily and not care too much about it being dropped, chipped etc.

I did a few mods to mine over lockdown, like adding a high mass bridge and new pickups (Entwistle Neos, then a Tonerider). Made the bass better sounding. I'm not going to say that these are on par with my Fender Elite Jazz, but they are great looking, sounding and if you choose carefully, well built.

Best colour combo in my opinion. Are blocks actual inlays or painted on?

  6. Have you considered Lollar Jazz pickups? I recently installed a set in my build and I am blown away by them. Higher output than my other basses including Vigier, Mayones. My bridge is 17.5mm Hipshot, but 18mm - 19mm would be fine too. Worth checking out if you don't mind buying from the US. I have it paired to a 3-Leaf preamp.

Who makes this? Is there an installation/wiring diagram? I’m very intrigued!

The headphone amp is professionally made for me. It should fit in most basses as the PCB is only about 40mm long. It will depend on what's in the cavity right now and how much space you have. It has a custom made jack that will turn on the bass preamp too. It doesn't affect the regular jack.

I bought one. Still waiting. I think I am going to be waiting for a while yet:

But yes, I want something I can use for guitar or bass. Clearly it is good for guitar, but there are presets for bass, and if it is as good as AMP, which I am assuming it should be, it will be great.

If she played her cards right, she could have me.
