Dark Star
1000x yes!
One of the few bands that completely blew me away the first time (and every time) I saw them. -
I'm coming round to this way of thinking.
The desire to blend two pickups is for my own vanity, not because anyone in the band or the audience had said my bass sound is poor - quite the opposite in fact.
Ultimately, I think I'd spend too much time fiddling with separate preamps or blend controls, trying to get some 'perfect' live sound that only exists in my head instead of sticking with the perfectly fine and useable sound that I already have and concentrating on playing and doing a good gig, which is what it's all about. -

Glad to report I'm relatively GAS free...except for those BF 1x10's 🤓

Humph. I now want a 51 style P- bass like yours and Jabba's piezo fretless. -
It was all so terribly....civilised!
Thanks to everyone involved in arranging the day and making everything run smoothly.

You oughta know by Alanis Morrisette
It's about 90% F#.
Shows what you can do with well chosen spaces. -

I'm still thinking my point is not being grasped. Do other people, on finding out from one's other half that you are a practicing muso, seem to think, for whatever reason, that she should attend every gig? Is that not completely weird?
People ask if she goes to our gigs, but I've never heard Mrs Rev say that someone was surprised that she didn't go to every gig/expect her to go to every gig.
So yes. It's weird. -

Sue comes to every one and has done for 17 years. She helps set up and tear down, does the lights and tells me if I am too loud or quiet. The only problem is I really don't know if she likes the music! She says she does but I don't really believe her. Oh, and she drives if there are free drinks all night.

Does she have a sister? -
'Spose it all depends on how you define 'Indie'
The Smiths were arguably the quintessential indie band and while Morrisey would certainly qualify as dreary, no-one could describe Andy Rourke's playing as dull or unimaginative.
Snow Patrol on the other hand, have not yet produced a song with a bass part that made me prick my ears up. -
That's brightened up my Monday morning.

Actually Dave, it was on my 'umble ply where I first noticed this.
Ah, then it's true that it's all in the fingers. 😉
I dont generally play (and never gig) with the Snark on the bridge, but more because it buzzes like crazy than any noticeable muting effect. -
Seems obvious, but don't leave a clip-on on the bridge while playing. It has a dampening effect.
Maybe on your bass mate - on my East German plywood, it just makes not one iota of difference to the shininess of the turd. -
I have a Snark clip on bass tuner and a Korg Pitchblack pedal tuner. Both work fine with open strings.
The Snark prefers to be clipped to the bridge, rather than the scroll. -

I'm amazed that a DB can go into a Micra. Thanks for the info.
Micra? Pah!!
https://youtu.be/NWvI3QVjlv8
No matter how many times I watch this, I still can't believe it's real.
-
I've transported mine in a Nissan Micra so you'll be fine.
I put some padding under the upper bout to make sure that the scroll was elevated and not taking any of the weight of the bass. It's also a good idea to pack some items either side of the bass so that it doesn't roll onto its back when you go round a corner. -

I have an unused set of Rotosound 45-105 to put on the pile if you'd like them? -

I'll also try taping some bass guitar pickups on just to see if the strings work well with mag pickups.
I believe they might be nylon core with a steel wrapping.
You'll most likely need steel core strings to use a magnetic pickup as there's not enough metal mass in the wrap to generate a useable current. -
I've used sandpaper on super silvers and Presto Nylons to improve bow grip - it certainly improves grip but not tone...
I have Spiro weichs and innovation braided on my basses. Both can be played arco or pizz but the Spiros are much better for pizz and the Braided better for arco. I actually quite like the Braided for pizz as well, they have quite a nice old school dark tone. IMHO, for pizz the braided E and A are the best sounding E and A of the whole Innovation range. -

Have to say I was somewhat taken aback at the price of strings. Only "cheap" ones are of an Alice brand which no doubt the old DB lags will try and steer me clear of.
Now you listen here young man....... ;-)
I'd say use whatever works best for you - if that happens to be a £50 set off Ebay then happy days!
However...
There's a reason that lots of people use Thomastik Spirocores or Evah Pirazzi - they're very playable and they sound good and they last. In the grand scheme of things, a set of Innovation braided are cheap (by double bass string standards) and if you like them, there's no reason for you to buy another set of strings for the rest of your playing life - they will last that long.
Check out the DB 'for sale' forum - the old DB lags are always selling off sets that they bought but didn't like or their bass didn't like. You can save 50% off the cost of a new set if you're patient enough to wait for the right set to come up. -
Innovation Silver slaps do not work well with a bow. The synthetic wrap (nylon??) is too slippery for the bow to grip the string and get it vibrating. Even if you can get the string moving, it sounds pretty nasty...
Innovation Braided are the best (Innovation) choice for arco, followed by the Honeys. Both will be higher tension than the Silver Slaps so you'll probably fnd slapping the Honeys (oo-err...) a bit of a challenge.

Reverend,
Thank you for your suggestion. The shadow pickup has a battery volume and a tone contr4ol on it. I thought it might be active, I'll try using the bass eq box as I believe that has a pre amp in it.
What model Shadow pickup do you have? The RB rockabilly pro system comes with a 2 channel preamp with a subsonic filter and a low cut control. Both those controls are designed to help prevent feedback. -
The Roland microcube is a great little home use amp. Lots of useful amp models, on board effects, basic drum machine, aux input for CD or MP3 player and a headphone output.
-
Are you using a pre-amp between your pickup and the amp input?
Piezo pickups like the Shadow will work straight into the amp input, but the impedance mis match between the amp input (typically 0.5-1MOhm) and the impedance that the pickup works best with (~10MOhm) can result in a thin sound, which you then try to boost with some bass eq, which then makes you more prone to feedback.
More importantly, many preamps come with a high pass filter control - I find this essential in reducing the subsonic frequencies which are usually the main culprit in causing feedback. -
Definitely try stuffing some foam/pillow/soft toy between the fingerboard and body and tailpiece and body. It'll kill off the bass resonance which is what carries through the house when it's quiet.
Small & portable EUB?
in EUB and Double Bass
Posted
There's a Bassix EUB in the for sale forum - they don't come much more compact than that.
Can't vouch for the sound but I'm pretty sure the Bassix instruments have an acoustic chamber to make them more double bassy than yer typical solid stick EUB.
