    Hi @Plusnine

Thanks for your kind words and offer of a trade... Your SBV looks great; very cool, retro vibes.

But having said that, it's not something I have a need of at the moment as it's similar to a Jazz bass tonally I understand, and I recently bought one of those which I'm really happy with...

Sorry and best of luck with your sale!

    Cheers

    Nik

Thanks Nik, no worries at all!

  2. Here for sale is one of the most unique basses I’ve ever owned, a Yamaha SBV 500 from (I believe) 1998.

It’s an absolutely fantastic Yamaha jazz style bass, with a pretty wide range of sounds available. I’ve mostly used it for recording since I’ve owned it and it’s given me no issues whatsoever.

In terms of condition, the bass has no issues at all, a few very minor bumps as you’d expect from an older instrument like this, but overall it’s in rather great shape.

The only things of note are the lack of headstock logo which has rubbed off, as well as a small outline of a faded sticker that was once on the scratch plate, before I purchased the bass.

As for the logo, I’ve purchased a like-for-like decal of the original which I have yet to add on, but I’m happy to include as part of the price.

For the sticker mark, I’ve not attempted to try and do anything with it as it doesn’t bother me personally, but custom scratch plates are available if you’d like to get something pristine.

It’s served me really well since I’ve had it, but I’m looking to move on to something like a Stingray or similar, so I’m looking to raise some funds. At time of posting, I believe there’s only one other for sale in the UK, as I had to get this shipped over from Japan. Happy to negotiate within reason on price. I’ll also throw in a gig bag at no extra cost.

I’m based in Haywards Heath, and I’d be happy to post at buyer’s expense and risk - but an in-person delivery (within a 40-ish mile radius with some extra fuel money) or collection would be preferred!

I’ve tried to photograph any potential scratches but please let me know if you’d like more photos!

    Thanks for looking :)

Just get them snug, comfortably hand tight (doesnt have to be like a vice!) - you dont want a screw snapping. Also look out for any shims that have been put in the neck pocket (small slithers of thin wood usually - though sometimes you find plastic or ever card!!) and make sure they are where they started from when you put it back on.

Thanks very much! I’ll give it a go and see what I can find

If you pop the neck off it shoulf have it screen printed on the Heel - PB-70, PB-62 and I think PB-58 depending if its a 62/70's or 50's reissue. The logo on the headstock would suggest a PB-70 (it's the 70's style P bass logo). The normal MIJ fenders Ive seen that aren't re-issue models have all had logo's similair to the MIM ones currently out. Also all of the PB-70's I've seen have been either white or natural (maybe a black one).- theres a few white ones on Reverb at the moment.

The MIJ ones had the smaller "One size goes on everything" tuners (they also fitted them to the PB-62's - I had a PB-62 in Photoflame blue)whereas the USA made ones had the full size 70's style tuners (smaller baseplate revrese wind on the 50's and 60's I believe)

Either way its a nice bass!

Cheers! I’ll take a look when I restring it, currently deciding which flats to put on it. I’ve also never taken the neck off off anything, do I need to worry about tightening the screws too much etc when I put it back on?

oooh tasty.. is it the PB-70 (70's Reissue)? Im guessing by the logo it is?

I’m not entirely sure actually! I tried to track down the exact model with the serial number but it was inconclusive, built sometime around 97-20’ though I believe?

Nice - I like the way the white has aged a little - makes a change from all the sunbursts!

Cheers! I’m a fan of it too. I was originally looking at a sunburst one, but this one called to me for some reason. It’s got just the right amount of ageing for me.

  7. Finally got my hands on this P-Bass I found on eBay a little while ago, one 6-hour trip to Gloucester and back and it’s sitting pretty in my house.

Plays wonderfully, and the build quality is superb from what I can tell. The rosewood board is very rich and easy to play, which I was a little worried about having mostly played maple boards.

It’s come with custom shop 62’ pickups pre-installed and a new set of Fender pots, so I’m unable to check the exact serial numbers, but it’s from around 97-00’ from what other BC’s have said in my previous thread.

Only modification I’ve made is to switch out the black pickguard for this red tort one, which I rather like. I’m considering getting the pickup cover and ashtray but I’m still undecided…

    Overall, very very happy!

I have had a few Fender Japan Precisions and always go for the PB70 model. The neck profile is the same as the B profile which is, as you say, between a Jazz and a 'standard' P bass. Exceptional instruments. I always swapped out the pickup for a Kent Armstrong Vintage P but there are loads to choose from.

Very much looking forward to giving this a go! The seller has already fitted some Custom Shop ‘62’s which I’ve heard some good things about?

The information here's not correct. Fujigen Gakki only ever made 'Made In Japan' labelled instruments. When manufacture moved from Fujigen to Dyna Gakki & Tokai Gakki, 'Crafted In Japan' was introduced to differentiate them. Seemingly Fujigen retain exclusivity over the MIJ label and it has appeared on occasional post-'97 Fujigen-made production runs.

The 'O' prefix & CIJ indicates it's post-'97 and from either Dyna or Tokai, but I don't think there's any way of distiguishing which of those factories built it. There's no quality differentiation between any of the factories used by Fender Japan.

Thanks for the insight! I was hoping I might find a birth-year bass for myself, so I’m going to try and decipher the volume pots when I get this on the weekend and swap the pickguard.

For what it's worth, I've had two 90s Jap Precisions over the past 15 years or so (now sadly sold on via BC).

Both were really, really good. No issues, fantastic sounding and playing instruments.

There is a dim sense around at the moment that 90s Fender Japan basses are on the up - not necessarily becoming the "new JVs", but not far off it either.

That's great to hear, thanks for your comment! Hoping to get my hands on this one, it'll be my first P.

I had a MIJ "Crafted In Japan" P bass a few years ago. It was a lovely sounding instrument and played beautifully, but it was very heavy. It may be me just being a big wuss, but it was the only bass I've ever sold because of the weight. This particular one might be as light as a daisy, but I think it would be a good idea to pop around to the seller and have a quick twang on it first.

    It does look gorgeous tho...

Assuming the seller was being truthful, it’s apparently somewhere in the range of 7.5lbs, which I’m hoping is correct!

It looks to have just about the right amount of mojo too, a few scars, but not too beaten up. As long as you're happy with it when you pick it up then I think it's safe to say it's a really nice bass.

I'm with you on the neck and it's often the fat necks that put me off, but the necks on these are sublime. I really like gloss/finished necks and these aren't too sticky, so perfect for me

For sure! I’m hoping to stick a red tort pickguard and a chrome pickup cover/ashtray to go for the Motown looks.

Very glad to hear that about the neck too, that’s sealed the deal for me!

It says in the description that you can try it,  I’ve always done that anyway where possible, you will soon know if it feels right  🙂

Think that’s my best bet really, just a little hesitant to commit money before I’ve played it. But hopefully the seller will be understanding.

I think the serial numbers from then were a bit all over the place with a few duplications here and there. The pots would narrow it down for you if you wanted to nail it exactly.

Either way it'd be a fantastic bass. I fall in and out out love with Precisions, but the model I have is the best Precision I've ever played and I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one up if I were looking for a new one. Go for it!

That’s wonderful to hear, think I’ll go ahead and buy it!

I haven't heard anyone say a bad thing about any Japanese Fender, especially the ones they were putting out in the 90s. That looks to me to be a PB70, essentially an export model made in Japan as the Vintera equivalent from back then.

I haven't played that particular model, but I do have a PB70US which, as far as I can tell, is pretty much the same bass, but with US pickups and different wood (that body should be alder). That would have originally had Japanese pickups and, from what I've read, their output was fairly weak so it's normally the thing people upgrade. Bonus that that'll already be done for you

It'd be a nice bass, really well made, and the thing that I love about mine is the neck. It's sort of between a J and P with 40mm nut width and fairly slim back to front.

There's a bit more info in the specs etc here....

    https://japanfender.wordpress.com/products/about/precision/

I would say about £600 is right for the export model, but the prices do seem to vary. I've seen some go for as low as £400, but then others go for £900, so it's a bit of a mixed bag!

Thanks for the info on this one Jonesy!

I was hoping it would be similar to the Pb70US ones due to the neck being slightly slimmer, which was my only fear switching from J to P basses (just prefer the tones!), so knowing it’s likely got that slimmer neck is a major bonus.
