Back in the late 70's when I was a very young fellow it was all word of mouth...it had to be, no internet, phones etc. You'd pop in the local guitar shop store on a Sat and see what the latest happening was, he might have a board but gigs back then were always full of local musicians on the look out for each other etc....But a couple of years ago I used JMB and it was ok. The only weird bit was sitting in a corridor with two other bassists....like waiting outside the headmasters office for a whack!...haha.

And there were the musicians wanted ads in the back of Melody Maker😁

I've decided to give up on trying to join a band, as over the last maybe 5-10 years I've found it nigh on impossible to get together with people who I want to make music with.

My current 'band' has been without a drummer for 6 months, we've not got together for a couple of months, so I feel it's just come to a halt.

It all feels a lot of effort for no payoff, over and over again :(

Rather depressingly, I feel this is almost certainly going to lead me to quitting playing altogether as I've no desire to play bass without doing it with a band.

I've no idea why it's turned out this way, or why it's so damn hard to find a band. In London FFS ! Shouldn't it be easier with this many people ? Oddly all my musical friends elsewhere in the country are all in bands.

Maybe it's me ? I'll not rule out this possibility :)

Anyhow, sorry, kinda jumped on the thread to moan a bit.

One band I was in had a drummer that was a proper pain and often "couldn't make it", our solution was my girlfriend of the time became a drum machine operator, so when old silly bollocks wasn't available we did it the other way, which worked fine, in fact it worked better without him!

There's often a think outside the box option.

Obviously if you're into a very traditional "rock band" type line up then having a drummer is a big thing, but there's a lot of folk out there in the world doing great stuff without one.

I had that (still have it, but the neck had issues and I had to replace it). Honestly, once filed the multiple bumpy frets and the very high nut slots, it was the most satisfying neck ever. My impression was that it was proper P width, but the thinnest of my lot back to front. I wonder if it was too thin for the cheap wood they use and a number of them are bound to be unstable or become warped over time. When I'll have money to throw away I'll get sombody to build me that neck but with quartersawn maple or something

You must've been unlucky, no doubt they're a bit of a lottery, but the one I have was fine, I could've simply tuned it up and gigged it straight out of the box

The specs say 42.8mm, but no matter how many times I measure mine, it's 40mm on the nose.

This piqued my interest, so I just measured my Squier cheapo PJ (the type that's being sold currently btw)  it certainly doesn't give the impression of a chunky or baseball bat neck..

Now, depending on where you're taking measurements from.. the actual with of the plastic nut itself is 39.82.. The wood of the neck at this point is 40.93

I wish there was more Goth over this way.  We're right out in the sticks and the best way to get gigs is to play at Young Farmers Club dances, where they will riot if you don't play Hi Ho Silver Lining, Summer of '69 and Don't Look Back In Anger.

Sounds as if it'd be just like in the old days, where you turn up in make up etc, and the local "geezers" look aghast with all the... "Woah.. what the Fk are you then?" type malarkey 😁

I've got a red one coming and having previously owned a Vintera with the anodised sandpaper scratchplate, does anyone know what scratchplate will fit these?

It looks like a US MIM one should fit.

Tbh if I'd got one I'd likely get the ebay bloke everyone uses to make me one, it'd be spot on then if you send him a template traced from the one on the bass...

I saw this offer too, and I really want one....  We're a bit thin, wallet-wise, in our house at the  moment, so I suspect I'll miss out on the deal.  Glad that they're a good bass, though - they look superb from my laptop.

Pretty much exactly the same here, been looking at the other thread on these too, like Ez I'd also have to change the Pickguard if I got one as I really don't like the goldy metal one.

If I didn't have another newish Squier P bass I'd not be able to resist though!

And none of them really did it for me, then I got the TC Electronic SCF gold. My search was over.

It's a good pedal certainly, though I always stack it with something else, particularly as mentioned, the Memory Man which also has its own chorus element in there too.

  9. Depends what you want from it I guess, there's one called "Past FX New Division" that's supposed to be a superior version of the old EH Clone Theory, though you can get EH's modern version of the C. T. I've heard some say the EH modern versions not great. ( genuine vintage ones are expensive and can die on you)

Plus these above are likely rather Peter Hook ish though I'd think.

There's loads of chorus pedals out there mostly aimed at guitar, though I wouldn't let that put me off, speaking of which, i've got a TC Electronic SCF gold which is quite good but fairly subtle, and an old Boss Me 50 (not the bass version) that's got quite decent chorus options, presumably lifted directly from the old Boss chorus range. I'm using this stuff mainly with Bass VI type instruments and combined with one (or sometimes two) EH Memory man pedals though, so probably fairly different from what you'd be doing your good self.

Chorus is great imho, though as I'm from the 80s I would say that.!

The OP made the one post and left. Never returned. The last person to do this was one SanFrancisco so I coined the situation of the members posting uselessly to an ingrate "SansFransicoed".

    We have again been SansFransicoed.

Or if you wanted to be a bit more hip you could say you'd been "Friscoed" 😁

  11. Hmm 1985, I was likely listening to Cocteau Twins (and other 4AD type bands).. Longpig ( ie "of love & addiction".. not the other similarly named band)

    That kind of thing.

I was personally being a bit of a painter (as in oil paintings) at that point too.

  12. Free to anyone that might find a use for 'em

2 brand new 9v centre negative fx pedal type power supply plugs. These when I tried them with a few different pedals were a bit noisy, they might even work fine for something you have, or even be useful to run the lighting on a model railway layout or whatever!

I didn't want to just bin them if they could be of use to someone else.
