Strings & Things in Brighton are UK distributors for Ernie Ball, it might be worth giving them a call. I needed a new truss rod wheel a few years ago and they were very helpful. https://www.stringsandthings.co.uk/contact-us

Yes thanks I know about Strings and Things and I emailed them but they have not responded. I emailed Ernie Ball in the US and they came back with 3 UK partners they said could order them for me and Strings and Things wasn’t one of them.  They suggested GuitarGuitar,  Peach Guitars, and Andertons.  I’ll try them next week.

Played a sea-front bar in Weston-super-Mare with a rock’n’roll band that I often work with.

    The positives:

    Nice location opposite the pier.

    Felt like I played well.

My rig sounded great (‘73 P > Demeter amp > BF Super Twin).

    Paid gig.

Second gig with Boss WL20 wireless setup - loving it!

    The negatives:

60 miles each way plus parking to pay for.

Loading area near the venue full of parked cars - owners obviously read ‘LOADING ONLY’ to mean ‘FREE PARKING’. Never mind, just blocked them in while I loaded out.

Guitarist’s DIY extension lead kept tripping the circuit breaker while we were setting up until I identified it as the cause.

Very few customers in the bar.

(New) lead guitarist hadn’t quite got his poop together.

I’m fed up with pub gigs and looking for some better quality work next year i.e. function band or tribute act.

Pub gigs used to be great until breweries started recruiting managers and landlords who couldn’t run a tap never mind a pub. They’re only in it because they like a good drink and think it’d be a good idea to run their own drinking hole.
I saw great music pubs change inept landlords a number of times before eventually shutting down. That’s why I gave up gigging for a few years. Now I don’t do pubs.
You can tell a good pub by the way the landlord presents themselves. If they’re scruffy and dressed in joggers it’s not a good place.

100% that's how i look at low attendance gigs. Paid rehearsal and just enjoy it for what it is.

    Dave

I’m sure we’ve all had a few of those over the years. I certainly have, but if the small attendance stays until the end, you’ve been entertaining them.

The Whistle Test / Lyceum gig is a treasured bit or archive footage amongst fans of the band. Granted it's not A1 quality, but if you found it to be a 'god awful barrage of noise' I suspect it's just not your thing.

Rutherford is an underrated bass player. Unfortunately for the last few albums he pretty much phoned the bass parts in.

Ok I’m obviously not a dedicated fan, and totally unfamiliar with anything I heard. That would have coloured my reaction. I suppose like a lot of these recorded concerts, you had to be there to fully appreciate it. I try to make a point of watching bands and artists I’ve never listened to in the past, just in case I missed something I might have liked.

  5. BBC2 last evening showed an Old Grey Whistle Test concert by Genesis, fronted by Phil Collins. I confess I know little of their catalogue so I’m probably not the best judge.  But it was fu#&%ing awful. It may have been the BBC’s sound mix at fault, or possibly Collins himself but I couldn’t understand most of the lyrics and overall it was just a god awful barrage of noise.
    Just my tuppence worth.

BLOCKBUSTARZ Glam Rock covers gig tonight in a small bowling club in Polmont outside Falkirk. Sold Out tho and what a great wee night it turned out to be.

They provided 2 trays of freshly made sandwiches from a shop supplier with water, soft drinks and crisps.

Paid at half time too so that was nice and we've been re-booked for start of next year again. Great feedback and lots of dancing and people simply enjoying themselves. Varied age group as well which is always good seeing the different generations enjoy what we do.

Sandberg VM4 running flat into Shure Wireless and then Ampeg SVT7 Pro almost flat EQ with just the bass boosted up to about 2 o'clock. Mesa SW210/115 cabs and my EBS Env filter for one song.

Quite a quiet gig as we were well down on the amps and just using the smaller 12" QSC vocal PA.

I find it difficult getting into a gig when its too quiet. I prefer a bit of volume to take my speakers into "working mode" where they sound a lot better.

All in all a good night and well paid for such a small venue on a Fri night.

    Dave

    Extra points for BLOCKBUSTARZ 🙂

I haven’t actually broached the subject of money yet. I am assuming it is going to be good for a New Year’s Eve gig. It better be, because I think I am going to have to take my partner out for a very special dinner to make up for not being there. She didn’t seem bothered when I was first asked but she looked a bit unhappy when the reminder came in!

I haven’t done a New Years Eve gig in years, they were never enjoyable and I haven’t missed them. I’d rather be somewhere else with my family. My last band made a decision to never do them as we’d all had bad ones.

  8. Duo gig Sunday afternoon left me with a mild back ache. 3 hours standing playing bass and vocals, with a short break in the middle. 40 songs. I guess I’m getting old. I used to that and more without any problems when I were a younger lad. Great receptive crowd made it for us though.

That was 'W E Sellanby, they had a shop on the main road as well.

    I'd forgotten the Legion...........

    😎

Yes he moved across the road from the market. Went legit. 🙂
I saw a good number of top bands in the Legion when I were a young lad.

South Harrow?   Has to be the church hall off Corbins Lane?

If so it was promoted by someone I knew............

    😎

The British Legion up by the police station on the main road. We saw a lot of ultimately famous bands in there over the years.
South Harrow Market also had the best second hand record stall in North London. I bought a great collection of American label blues and R&B 45’s in there. Wish I still had them.

  11. Very early in the 60’s probably 62, a school mate and I managed to sneak in to a club in South Harrow to see some R&B band whose name I can’t recall. We were very much under age but we knew the guy on the door. The advertised band didn’t show and up on stage was Alexis Korners Blues band. There was some initial dissatisfaction amongst the audience but the band soon won everyone over. They were amazing. Korner sat on a chair to one side for most of the evening with a cheroot permanently sticking out of his mouth, and Cyril Davies looked dressed for a day digging up roads but boy could he play the harmonica and sing the blues. His harmonica mic was going into a little red Watkins Westminster amp. I had one of those at the time. Not very good for bass.
I don’t know who else was in the band that night, but Long John Baldry was the main vocalist.

  12.  Comparing most social media to Basschat, there is a noticeable difference in the quality of posts. For a start pretty much everyone in here can spell and has a pretty good grasp of grammar.
I have a number of social media accounts, none use my real name or personal details. I rarely look at any of them these days except for one FB account I use to repost news of upcoming gigs. Someone else posts the originals.

So seven years on I've stumbled across Born Fighters, which is a bloody good watch, and also possibly the earliest (1979) recorded use of 'wasp in a jam jar' to describe a guitar's tone.

Thanks for putting this up, I would never have found it. Amazing how much drink and nicotine they consume. Great watch.
