Neil Peart!
Yeah, I reckon Neil Part has to be the classic example.

I believe Nicky Wire writes the Manics’ lyrics (that aren’t Richey’s) and JDB writes the music.
Yes, forgot that one! I think Nicky and Ritchie originally wrote the lyrics together, plus the band manifesto(!) etc.
Due to the well known sad circumstances Nicky does it alone now.

Using Electronic tuner - $15.
How about playing the whole set with a tuner clamped to the headstock?

I recently saw Black Sabbath doc which said (I think it's well known) that whilst Iommi wrote most of the riffs for Sabbath, Geezer Butler wrote the majority of the words.
I think that bassist Bob Daisley wrote the lyrics for the Ozzy albums he was on too.
So are there any other notable cases where the bassist (or drummer, guitartist) etc. writes the lyrics for a band, but they are not the singer or the music writer?
( so not Phil Lynott - he was the singer, not Nikki Sixx - he wrote the tumes too)
A couple of non-bassists spring to mind........

Usually the bass in such set ups needs to fill things out a bit, however, and rather bizarrely for the genre, the singer had a good melodic voice and we soon found out that any clever bass lines I played simply got in the way of his melodies.
So you volunteered to sing a few songs to make a vacuum for a clever bass-line? Or did I miss your point ?

I'm just thankful that we have the variety we have... simple basslines, complex bass lines and everything inbetween.
Sometimes it's right to "serve the song", but I'm glad not everyone takes that approach all the time.
Bass is part of the song, can lead the song, can define the song.

Writing note names above the ledger line notes. No fine for writing TAB above the ledger line then?

The director had obviously never heard of the "keep the cameras off the bassist" rule.
Don't forget subsection B: close-up on bassist during the guitar solo .

Chip p!ssing alert....
I don't get his thread. I get factually incorrect. But here we are - 14 pages in yet hardly any of the examples are factually incorrect. Mostly it is nit picking over words that are figurative or metaphorical. Song lyrics do this. Kind of like poetry. If all songs ever said was literal it would be like listening to Janet and John books to music. Or Motorhead. 😉
OK, carry on.
One one hand, you are right.
On the other hand - let's not let the facts (or indeed what was asked for in the original post) get in the way of a good thread.

I've been musing over some of my basses and thought that a thread dedicated to a photo of your favourite bit of wood on your favourite bass would be quite cool!
A few minor ground rules:
The photo must be a bass or a guitar you own.
It must be a photo taken by you.
It must show ONLY WOOD! No hardware, pickups etc. Just wood!
Minor light editing allowed, no major photoshopping!
Name your instrument and the wood (if you can!)
Keen to see what crazy examples show themselves! Here is my submission: 'Space Worm'. It is a Reiver Kompakt T7 (built by Alan of ACG) with a dyed Maple Burl top.
Very nice.... can we see the whole instrument at some point? Perhaps after this one has been declared the overall winner😉.

Think I must be mad, but I've decided to put a Spotify playlist together of this thread. 4 pages in so far.
I wouldn't quite say you were mad, but probably worth keeping an eye on it 😉.
Seriously though, great idea!

Me neither, I just heard it on the excellent Late Junction.
I dip into Late Junction every now and then... thanks for the reminder - I'm overdue a dip. Now downloading a recent edition onto my BBC sounds app.

There are a few different definitions of what dance music means.... but for the purpose of this thread I'm going for the the genre that happened after disco in the Eighties... house and rave etc.
And as I'm not an expert in that area I'll be choosing from the big chart hits.
The top three for me have been mentioned already
Back to life
Ride on time
Groove is in the heart.

How about Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica Album?
For example the opening track "Frownland" contains 7/4, 5/4,12/8 and 8/4 - usually two of them at once. That's according to the guy in the second video.....I could never work that out for myself 😕😕.
Here is a 30 minute analysis of the song. Actually the first 15 mins talks about the album in general, recording process and lyrics. The last 15 mins go into the musical structure of the song. In minute detail. Way beyond my level but fascinating to watch!

Sail Noup, please delete all bass lines in every song ever played on by Peter Hook.
Ta
Got one of the team onto it now.
And as a bonus, we'll pull his bass up to chest height while we're at it.

I tried to start a thread like this once but just got burned by other people explaining to me that the examples I gave weren't cr*p. Oh and helping me to understand the function of subjectivity and its application in popular music.
For which lessons I am eternally grateful.
When I read a statement like "wake me up before you go go is crap but the bassline is great" in a discussion forum I assume a) that they intended it as statement of their opinion and b) that they assumed that no-one would read it a statement of fact, because it's a discussion forum. And that's OK with me.
If they made the same statement in Wham's Wikipedia page then it would not be OK with me.
And lastly, I assume that if someone uses the word 'pants' in a thread title then it's meant to be fun.

Not quite sure which dance track say is best.... but this would be a hot favourite.
In fact I'd go so far as to put my normal reserve to one side and declare it a 'banger'!

I love Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees... but the stuff the bass does high up on the G string really jars for me.
It's not so much that we lose the bottom end - that could be part of the texture of the song.
It's that it does not follow the chord change, and seems to randomly stop playing at some points.
Bassist (etc) as main lyric writer (but not singer/tunesmith)

I think some ofStiff Little Fingers early lyrics were written by the manager - Gordon Ogilvie if I remember correctly.
I think he had a background in journalism.
