Thank you, her name is familiar because Green Seagull supported a band I used to session for, think we’ve crossed paths at some point.

Initially I thought about getting a nitro refin but there doesn’t seem to be anyone even remotely near to me.So  I’m keeping an eye out on Reverb for replacement bodies. My fave was my black Mustang. Shouldn’t have sold that one :(

You can't get a roller into a paint pot, either, but folk paint walls with 'em. Imagination, son; imagination. -_-

I’ve seen that top one before, does it belong to the bassist from the psych band Green Seagull? I know it was a custom order. I’d definitely go for something like that 👍

  3. Okay so my main bass is a lowly Squier CV Mustang bass, and I love playing it but in terms of the colour scheme it’s a bit vanilla. Oly white with a tort pickguard. It’s not offensive but I would like a different colour for the body. Apart from Stratosphere online is there anyone else I should be looking at?

I really appreciate any advice in advance. 🙏

  4. I think she’s a great player and having done sessions on bass, keys, drums and guitar I know that Donna Lee isn’t the easiest tune to negotiate on any instrument. Having said that, all I’m hearing here is muso show off dry w@nk business. But she rocks it nonetheless. I couldn’t play it ever, so full respect from me for having a go 👍

  5. I used to take a little 1970s Fender Vibro-Champ out for smaller gigs, plus my pedalboard. But that was usually for smaller volume situations or maybe where the PA might only be for vocals. I have used little amps for biggish gigs a few times (Jazz Cafe, 100 Club, Sage Gateshead, etc) and the engineer just takes a line out from the amp into the desk. So small amps definitely can work, depending on your band. But usually for larger gigs or festivals or anything away from home there would be backline already provided, some good, some awful 😂

Worth trying to work with what you’ve already got I’d say. Unless GAS is part of it...

Oh yes! There's money in the right kind of weirdness!

I remember our lot changing the show somewhat while I was away in That London - I was only the (on-stage) stage manager (I wandered about on stage in a dinner suit with a Moroccan Horseman's sword strapped on my back) - and we were due to do an actual show with actual decent audience at Peace Hall in Halifax. So I'd only wander about during the first bit of the show, then I was meant to run up a ladder to the top of this tower I had to build and throw first turnips then flour down this huge funnel. Meanwhile they "walked from the stomach" and recited important gibberish in Chaucerian English while dressed in sacks.

As I hadn't been party to what was due to happen after the flour-dousing I just remember thinking "they can't be that stupid" as they lit some flaming torches. I slid down the ladder shouting "Noooo!!!" as Paul, the leader, swished the torch near his hessian skirt and went up with flames about 15-20 feet high. He jumped off the stage and as he rolled on the grass I sprayed him with a CO2 fire extinguisher.

To all of our credit the show went on as if all this was part of it...

And as we sat in the pub for a post-performance pint of Landlord Paul said "who'd'a thought flour were flammable?"

Me, for one. But they were Artists...

Haha, that is fabulous! And I would have paid money to see that. My wife’s lot were merely arty and weird. They’d perform at Sadler’s Wells or Bloomsbury Theatre and them sort of places, so there was always pro crew with them. But I don’t think they ever did any pyro work or stuntman-level stuff. Full marks, sir!

Funnily enough, in about 1984-5 I was in a  Grotowskian theatre company called Theatre Babel who looked (and postured) in much the same way!

We were so unwilling to "sell out" that we packed up our Edinburgh Fringe show rather than have a Guardian reviewer see us 🤣

Brilliant 😂 My wife’s outfit had the same management as John Cale though, so I think they leaned more towards the capitalistic end of the avant-garde. If that sort of thing existed?

  8. Found the Fields Of The Nephilim video that my wife was an extra in. She was part of an alternative / modern dance troupe that used to do theatre gigs and art gallery stuff, and they were booked as extras for the video.

My wife is about as un-goth as it gets nowadays. Funny to think of her being in a Nephilim video :)

This must be the most under-rated Jackson family tune ever.

They did a brilliant cover of “I’ll Bet You” by Funkadelic on that ABC album as well. Don’t know how overlooked it is but there’s usually a couple of absolute belters tucked away on any of the early Jackson 5 albums.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the base sound it’s just that the Fallout has so much ‘more’ that I’d love to have some of the same in the MW.

The price of the MW Mustangs does seem to have rocketed!

I know! I missed a MW Mustang by about an hour on a local classifieds site earlier this year for something like €130. Bah!

  11. I’d echo other folks advice about trying to find a used Flea signature Jazz within budget. It should be possible and they’re really good basses. A mate in the UK has one which he stripped the finish back to natural, other than that it’s stock original, even the strings. Lovely bass to play 👍 Good luck with the search.

I’m thinking of a humbucker upgrade to this one. The tone on the stock is ok but I find it a bit weak against my Fallout and I occasionally swap about in a gig. Anyone any suggestions?IMG_0244.thumb.jpeg.e4ea72bb78620913ba9308d68ed623aa.jpeg

That’s weird, I remember really liking the pickup on the MW Mustang I had. It seemed to have a fatter sound than the other Mustang basses I had. Probably should have kept mine!

  13. Oh that’s awful news :(

He was a great player (“Barbarism Begins At Home” was my favourite of his recorded bass lines) and The Smiths were the first band I saw live. And I had no idea he was only 59? Shocker.

  14. I got a used W (maybe Warwick?) electric guitar gigbag for free when a local studio was having a clearout and it does a pretty decent job of keeping the dust off my Mustang around the house.

Not sure if I’d want to tour with it, I’d probably want a hard case for that, but to keep it clean at home it’s fine. For occasional gigging I’d get a proper gigbag for it. I’ve got a Taylor acoustic gigbag that does the same job as the W bag but it’s a bit roomy. But for home use it’s alright and it was a freebie. I’m such a cheapskate 😂

  15. That looks absolutely spot on 🧡 You must be very happy with it, I certainly would be!l, it’s a beauty!

Hope I don’t derail the thread but I have a question for you regarding the chrome covers, specifically does the bridge ashtray cover require special screws to fix it in place? I can buy the Fender bridge cover online but it’s not supplied with mounting screws. Not sure what to use. I’m guessing pickguard screws wont hold it down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

Congrats again on such a fine looking Jazz 👍

  16. One I often noodle away on is “Bass Catch” by Carol Kaye / The Greasy Bass Blues Band. Carol plays electric pick bass and (I think?) Ray Brown plays upright bass. It’s only a two chord vamp with a simple turnaround but I love jamming along to it:

Another one would be the version of “Have I Sinned” by Lloyd Charmers. As with a lot of 1970s reggae singles I don’t know who’s playing bass but it’s a great line to play along with. Easy peasy but I love it:

It's never "vinyls" (and certainly not "vinyl's"). Just vinyl will do.

And anyway the proper term is "records".

I know 😂 I only say ‘vinyls’ to upset my nerdy record collecting friends. And having done the research I can confirm it works a treat 👍

Can we stop with the greengrocer's apostrophes when we're posting about CDs?  Just because a word or abbreviation ends with an s it doesn't necessarily need a leading apostrophe; it's CDs, not CD's.  Records, not record's.  Albums, not album's.  Does my freaking nut in.

Hang on, so vinyls isn’t vinyl’s now either? I realise my meds are pretty strong and English is my second language but even so, I’m struggling to get to grip’s with this new phenomenon 🤔

  19. I’ve only met one other BC-er @Dad3353 in real life and it happened to be a life changing experience due to the circumstances. Due to my out-of-the-way location I’m unlikely to bump into many other BC-ers, if any at all, but it still feels more like a community than any other online place.

I never bothered with TalkBass, can’t be doing with walking on eggshells around the many persecution complex afflicted nutbars who populate it. And I’ve never had to put anyone on the ignore list here. It just seems like a more easy going place 👍

  20. CDs and vinyl mostly. There’s a lot of music that I love that hasn’t yet made it to YouTube never mind streaming platforms. I rarely buy new vinyl nowadays but a couple of labels send me their new releases as a promo thing. And I don’t listen to music ‘on the go’ so it’s usually CDs at home for me. I am an old git, though 😂
