1.
If you're going to do that then maybe we should have retro theme (not J-Retro) and I'll bring my WEM and Sound City bits. Anyone got a Framus Star bass?
My Trace Elliot's not that retro - it'll still horrify any vintage tone fans with it's scooped hi-fi sound. :)

  2.
So what do we think? Utter cr@p or possibly OK?
Does sound dodgy. Stick to your guns: cleared cheque, PayPal or cash on collection - no exceptions. I always think offering up your bank details for tranfers are dodgy too, so decline any offers.

Ask for a landline phone number to discuss, that usually scares them off!

  3. Thanks OBBM for organising it. It was my first bash and it was interesting to meet and chat to everybody. Loved NickThomas' G&L L2500 and CK's Cutlass (go on then, stick it in a bag and I'll take it). Silverfoxnik played my Stingray better than it's ever been played (git), so he's now booked to dep for me at all my gigs. Was en route from a band rehearsal so didn't manage to bring gear much along but will pack the car up for the next time! May even bring the 1984 prototype Trace Elliot combo. :)

  4. Buy a secondhand decent quality rig rather than Behringer. You'll feel better about it in the long run. Chances are the s/h kit will hold its money better too.

Oh and 300w+ Like a lot of people say, you're better off running the amp at 3 than having to run it flat out.

  5.
Anyone else a little bemused by the glut of Warwick Streamers on for sale? Not healthy for suppressing that bad bad GAS. :)
It's sod's law. When you're not looking they're everywhere - the minute you've got some cash together they vanish!

  6.
For me a bass has to be new & shiny and not look as though it's been dragged kicking & screaming behind the gig van as opposed to in it! But more importantly, it has to work with me when I'm playing, rather than making playing an uphill struggle.
Good man! Thought was just me who didn't get the vintage thing. I can see the eye candy appeal but the playability of old instruments is a bit of a battle. Each to his/her own though. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

  7. It's run by the Music Industries Association and I've heard really good things about it. There's a TV piece about it here: http://www.mia.org.uk/docs/media/sky_281005.wmv

  8. I'm rehearsing in Guildford on Sat morning so might be able to poke my head in for an hour or so now. Any special requests for me to bring anything? I might bring all three basses including my new G&L if anyone fancies a go?

  9.
How about Mark Bedford (Bedders) from Madness?
Good call, some of his stuff is really clever. If you've got a spare hour, try learning the line to "It Must Be Love". It's really clever with tons of feel. I love playing that one live.

Also would offer up Andrew Levy from the Brand New Heavies. Check out the band's "Brother Sister" album for great examples of how to play in the pocket.

  10. Pack of strings for £2.89! Got to be rubbish, surely. Or has anyone tried them? Maybe good as kit bag spares?

  11. No story to top any so far but FWIW, I did once make a Hen Party scream every time I hit a low F. Mainly because they were sat on a raised wooden floor by the side of the stage and were getting the vibrations. In the break they asked me to play more low notes.

    The F spot, clearly.

  12. Cover Over Covers. Have made me three now and I'd order again. Do bespoke thick padded covers from your measurements with the logo printed on the front for about 40 quid. They have a website - but are a bit stuck in the dark ages. Phone them directly and fax over a drawing of your cab. They'll also add velcro'd side flaps if you ask. Not the fastest turnaround (allow 2 weeks) but the results are very good. Survives being dragged in an out of cars and keeps the cabs really clean. www.coverovercovers.co.uk and ask for Barry.

  13.
It's a Status Vintage GP - with 'GP' being Guy Pratt: http://www.status-graphite.com/
(can't add a direct link easily as the awful Status site uses frame sets - but there's info about the whole range there)
Nice looking bass - but I just can't get my head around the whole plastic neck thing.
Don't mind the plastic neck - it's the horrible 51 Precision style body it's attached to. And semi acoustic. Ugh! It's like a FrankenFender. They're ugly enough as is!
