Thanks for the feedback guys. I did get some other quotes from £400 to £1000+ which didn't seem like a great investment, and having claimed over £20k on my house insurance last year for burst pipe damage I didn't want to go down that route either, so I think on balance I made the right choice.

Hi, I ended up taking it to a local guitar repair workshop who said they could repair it but could not make it perfect. They were right. To be honest it doesn't look an awful lot better after their repair, however it is now sealed and smooth to the touch (believe they filled it with Superglue and sanded it down), and they only charged me £40. If you want to see photos it's now up for sale on this forum.

All I need now is a fretless Mouse to complete the set. Anyone know of one for sale?

Firstly IMHO they are all excellent basses. The Shuker is fabulous looking and does everything it should, the only reason it's not quite right for me is the string spacing is not enough for my long fingers (16.5mm), especially as I play upright quite a bit. The build quality is terrific, the active tone controls have excellent range and there’s plenty of Mwah if you want it. The Rick Turner is amazing - incredibly lightweight, really high build quality and it is great for me with 17.5 mm string spacing. It's totally unique in the design, it has the simplistic ethos of the Rob Allen but the acoustic strings make it feel and sound rather different. The only bass I would ever change it for would be the Deep 5, and I'm still not sure about selling it just yet. I've attached some pics. I see you're quite local to me, PM if you want to give them a try.

A Big brother for my Mb2. I've been hankering after one for some time now, but with Rob's policy now of only making what suits his business, as opposed to what customers dictate (which is fair enough if he is able to do it), and the rarity of secondhand ones available the likelihood of me getting one looked pretty slim - especially considering my very specific requirements (fretless, unlined, min 17mm string spacing). I just thought I would try my luck on the Owners' Facebook page, and lo and behold I got lucky, a great guy in Italy responded, we did a deal and I am now the proud owner of a Deep 5 to go with my Mb2 4 string. I must admit I was slightly twitchy about sending a not insignificant sum of money to a complete stranger in a foreign country, but I trusted my luck to PayPal's compensation policy and bit the bullet. Antonio turned out to be a really great guy and the bass was in my hot little (actually big) hands within a few days and I couldn't be more pleased. Initially the action was too low for me - lots of lovely Mwah but not much attack and rather inclined to buzz on the low B, but a half turn on the truss rod did the trick and all is now great. This now means there will be no real point in having any other 5 string basses, so I'll be selling a couple of very nice ones soon in the form of a Shuker Artist 5 and Rick Turner Renaissance 5. Probably when things have normalised a bit more and hopefully the Bass community will be more comfortable spending money on bass guitars.

I can't see any way of editing a For Sale post to show it is now sold. Other members seem to be doing it, am I just a dimwit? Another question that arises from this is why is there not a separate category for Sold Items - as it now stands someone looking through items for sale has to plough through all the Sold items as well. Whilst it's nice to be able to reference previous sales to gauge prices, they make it difficult and longwinded to find ones currently for sale. Lastly, I often search the site for a relevant post on a particular subject and am shown no results, however if I search Google it will find one on the site, does the site search facility have a very limited range? Thanks in advance for your help..

I started playing bass guitar just over 3 years ago after a break of 50 years, although whatever I had learned as a teenager was self-taught and had disappeared into the mist of time anyway. I started on bass guitar, using the one-finger-per- fret method and after about 18 months started also playing double bass, using 1-2-4 fingering on that. Just to make things even more complicated, after another 6 months I injured the 3rd finger on my left hand (don't ask - it involved a Table Saw). So I then had to use 1-2-4 on the bass guitar, which seemed to work fine. After a year my injured finger was again usable, but by then I found it really difficult to start using that 3rd finger again on BG, and now my left hand on BG tends to be a random mixture of both methods, which is not good for consistency of intonation on a fretless Bass. As I am now learning to sight read on BG I realise I have to decide on, and practice, one left hand method only on BG, so which to choose? Just to add another variable I have recently noted that some upright players use fingers 1-2-3-4! And lastly I find it really difficult to keep all the upper spare fingers pressed down on DB. So I need to sort out this muddle with a definite strategy to practice on BG and on upright and would welcome some advice from you expert bassists - should I use the same fingering on both BG and upright? If so, which one, plus any other guidelines based on your years of experience. With the band I play 50's 60's 70's pop/Americana, C & W, Jazz, Folk Rob Allen MB2 (4), Rick Turner Renaissance (5), Shuker Artist (5), Fender Aerodyne (4). All fretless. Hungarian Double Bass, Eminence EUB.

As a youngster I used to play on the Linoleum, but gave it up when I learned to walk.

Bought a set of “Honey” strings which went badly wrong - no fault of the seller I hasten to add. This seller went above and beyond to remedy the situation, he refunded my money after return of the strings and is now dealing with the manufacturer. Can not recommend highly enough, excellent guy. Yes I do have some of these but only about 5 or 6, so I may not have a suitable colour, I'll check it out, probably worth buying some more if necessary. I'll let you know how it goes. From YouTube, the pro's seem to set some store by using Superglue ss a filler, then levelling with a shielded razor blade, then sanding and polishing locally With multiple grades of wet/dry. That sounds like the sort of thing I should try on an old piece of polished wood first.

This is a new one on me, I've not heard about the soldering iron trick. I'm a relatively new member, was it the subject of a previous post?
