  1. Tried one out at London Bass show in September.  Nice build quality, sounded really awesome (given the general cacophony of all the slappers around me). Await your verdict and review with great interest. I really dont need anymore bass heads, but this one just might find its way into the arsenal.

  2. I have found a pretty good temporary solution. My Alembic fits both a Ritter and Warwick Rocksak Thunderbird gig bag. A bit of extra bespoke foam padding, will make gigging feasible, the original case is great but just way too big!

Many thanks to all responses, much appreciated.

Acknowledgement and appreciation to Mark and Ashley from Bass Direct who suggested the T'bird gigbag solution. Luckily I have one already Doh!

  3. Hi All, OK this is a first world problem but would appreciate advice.

I recently acquired a beautiful 20th Anniversary Alembic, but the hard case is absolutely massive and not gig (or car) friendly.

I am looking for a decent padded gig bag. It will just about fit into a Thomann deluxe bag but headstock is very tight against lining and would be very vulnerable to knocks.

Any Basschatters know of a decent well padded large bag? Thanks

The BLX range features a little used tuning system and not all speakers will benefit from it. I am sure someone on here will be able to tell you the correct speaker. I believe they used Celestion drivers from memory.

My BLX80 had a CELESTION  CT10-150, which was original. These were made for Trace hence the T.

My other BLX-80 had a retrofited Eminence Beta 10A rated at 250 watts.

Both combo cabs sounded similar to my ears.20190816_140138.thumb.jpg.f256ba0f7f3cc7d3866009384b00eef4.jpg

I am now thinking about taking the head out of the combo and using it with my other cabs.

First time playing with the Trace Elliot sound and I liked it😃

Yes, My Trace BLXs sound amazing through  decent modern cabs such as Barefaced or Vanderkley,  far superior to the boxy honky sound from the weird slot fronted combo cabs. Much more beef far less weight, best of both worlds!

Just to add to that if the amp was minimum 8 ohm, to my knowledge it would be the only solid state bass amp that Trace ever made that wasn’t 4 ohm minimum.

Many thanks for your very helpful posts. I had a shed load of Trace Elliot brochures that I collected when I wanted,,but couldn't afford them, sadly I think they were turfed out when we moved house.

I recently acquired a second Series 6 BLX 80. This states 4 ohm minimum load on the two speaker jack outputs. On inspection and comparison of the amp chassis they appear to have identical components,  particularly ouput transforner, transistors and capacitors.  Apart from a few differences in preamp and front panel facilities the only difference I  can see being the series 6 has a much larger finned heat sink. So I reckon my other BLX 80 rated at 8 ohm does refer to internal speaker, can will run into 4 ohms speaker,  but may get a bit warmer.

  7. This looks interesting, as I love my Quilter Bassblock 800, so worth a try, just wonder what price point will be? But no XLR D.I.out? With Sansamp, MXR and Trace Elliot Transit B, preamp boxes, not sure this will be joining my bass stable. 45W at 4 ohm for stage monitor seems  a tad underpowered for my band ( or rather drummer)

OK, it’s built by John Cruz, but FFS, it’s a P bass at nearly £12k! I don’t think so.

Scandalous price!  Leo always claimed to make high quantity basses not high quality.Fender appear to be cashing in on the recent death of Philomena Lynott. Saw Phil use his P bass in concert and pretty certain at Croydon Greyhound a I'm sure it didn't have a Badass bridge. I could put a mirror pickguard on my SX and save well over 11 grand  a d I challenge anyone to notice the difference!

Another quick one.   What are people’s thoughts on Eden cabs, any good?

The Eden EX range are great value for money, with a good punchy sound. I had a pair of EX110s 300W and 8ohm each giving a total lower of 600W at 4 ohm. They were very handy and portable and loud enough for pubs clubs etc, but I always DI thru FOH PA. I sold them and got pair of EX112s same power rating and impedance  but I much preferred the EX112s which give more depth and better low end. They are still small and portable but not really lightweight as they are ferrite magnets not neodymium. Ive gigged my EX112s with a GK MB500, a PJB D400, and most recently with a Trace Elliot Elf, all to very good effect. There aren't many cabs that can compete at around £200 a pop.

  10. Following on from my recent SX P bass upgrade project, I have just acquired an old SX PJ style bass, and I am looking for a decent bridge single coil jazz p/u. I may use an Alan Entwistle PBXN to upgrade the P type split coil ( which I recently fitted to the aforementioned SX P bass and it blew me away for the price) or go Seymour Duncan. Has anyone tried the Alan Entwistle jazz p/us? Appreciate your advice and thoughts.

Nice, the SPB57. Did you put the heavy duty bridge on as it's not stock, afaik? Glad you like the PBNX. I agree, an aged MOP pickguard or cream would be the business.

Yes I fitted the Fender HiMass bridge. I have Badasses on all my Jazzes, but this is close and less than half price of the Omega Badass clones. Sonically there is little difference to my ears. The only issue is the pregrooved saddles and cheap pickguard means the strings do not align with the magnets.as the pickups need to move a couple of mm to the left. So my OCD requires me to adjust pickguard and if that doesn't do it , I will refile the bridge saddles.

  12. Well the Entwistle PBXN pickup arrived. Wow very impressed with the sound, nice tight lows and very punchy indeed without the slightly boxey honk of the stock SX one that I removed. Wonderful value for 27 quid. Didn't need to rout body  perfect fit, but cheap non Fender pickguard needed some minor alteration to get it to fit.   Plays well and sounds amazing. Might treat myself to an aged MOP pickguard to give it a more vintage look. But all in all a really cracking P style bass for around £110!  Think I will look for another beat up bass to rescue.

Thanks again for all your comments  advice and suggestions.
