I think the design aesthetic leaves a lot to be desired when compared to brands like the Darkglass and Aguilar. Admittedly I completely acknowledge that whether something looks good or bad to you is a very personal thing.

Yes compared to Mesa, GK , PJB and even Markbass heads (which aren't to everyone's taste) the Quilters aesthetic design leaves a lot to be desired. They look a bit basic with the chicken head knobs, retro at best, amateur radio enthusiast at worst. I don't like the sticky plastic logo on top of the BB800 either. However the sound and performance certainly don't disappoint. They are great amps  solidly built and have been very reliable to date. Beware the ugly kid with the hefty punch!

  2. Despite my initial apprehension and skepticism I found the 800's depth and contour user-friendly and easy to quickly dial-in great usable tones.

Prices have increased by about €100 since I got mine!

Like the look of the 802, but it does it have DI out?

  3. I regularly use (preCovid) Barefaced 2x12,  excellent cabs that use purpose built Eminence drivers.

Haven't tried Trickfish but heartily recommend Barefaced SuoerTwins or Big Twins which are the best cab I've ever tried.

Vanderkley 112MNT cabs which use Faital Pro drivers.are also excellent and worth considering.

I had to find a couple for my MkIV a couple of years ago (screw heads instead of allen bolts).

I bought both M2 and M2.5 sizes and sadly for the life of me cannot remember which size fitted, although I strongly suspect it was 2.5. I know they were only a couple of quid off fleabay anyway.

Well I ended up buying M2s, M2.5s and M3s to be sure, to be sure etc. It transpired that they were M3s on the Series 6 heads, so I was able to fit M3 Nylocks, all rattles gone amp sounding brilliant again. BTW Boltbase in UK were brilliant, very helpful even for a tiny order.

I've used Rotosound on Beatle bass copies & liked them, £30. Not suitable for Hofners, too thick for the tuners.

When I eventually got a Hofner HCT I looked at Labella and fitted these, £42.

    Another option is, £48.

I would be interested to hear any opinions about the 2 Labella gauges.

You will only need to buy flats once so I'd say spend the cash.

    I've never used Pyramid.

Many thanks I'll order a set of these.

I just realized that I've got the Thomastik-Infeld short scale Jazz Flats on my Danelectro. Danelectros have similar tuning posts to Höfner so I guess the Jazz Flats could actually work for a Höfner too... I'm not 100% sure though and the TI Jazz Flats would also sound VERY different to the Pyramid Golds. The Jazz Flats have a leaner, brighter, more "modern" flatwound sound. The Pyramid Golds are a lot fatter sounding. Much darker sounding and a lot more old school thump.

Many thanks, very helpful. I have ordered the lighter gauge La Bella flats.760FHB2s. I wouldn't be that confident putting 50s on such a thin neck, unless I was planning on taking up archery!

  7. Hi All, have just acquired a Hofner Violin bass for a song (or three). Am quite impressed with the sound and tonal flexibility of what I incorrectly thought would be a one trick pony.

What are the best short scale light gauge strings that won't break the bank?

I am temporarily making do with an old dead set of light gauge longscale round wounds that I have unwound the round wound so that the core will pass through the tiny machine heads/tuning pegs. These tuners would look more at home on cheap acoustic 6 string!

As everyone knows I am getting as much HB stuff as possible before the drawbridge is pulled up and we can't buy from the continent any more.

However I have no room for any more cabs, dammit!

Your comments nearly sparked me into an HB panic buying session, but then I realised being in Ireland I may be on the right side of the Thomann drawbridge. That won't help me bringing back the bass gesr stash I have accumulated in UK, but been unable to collect since lockdown..

they should be standard metric fasteners, measure the diameter of the screw and then hit up ebay or similar for some replacements, i would suggest Nyloc nuts as they are less susceptible to loosening off due to vibration.

i'll guess that they will be M3 but M2 or M2.5 are possible.

    Matt

Thanks Matt, I think they must be M2s. Cheers

  10. Does anyone have a couple of spares or know what size I.e. thread and diameter, the Allen nuts & bolts used to secure the Graphic Equalizer circuit board to the amp chassis on a Trace Elliot Series 6 GP7 head?

I recently made a new amp sleeve for a Series 6 GP7 head from a BLX combo. There was a rattle and vibration emanating from the amp at moderate volume. Initially I thought my cabinetry was at fault but on further investigation found that the graphic equalizer circuit board was loose as two of the four internal nuts were missing.

Does anyone know where I can source these. Failing this I will seek an old head for spares.

    Cheers

I always felt that the SB900 was superior to the 1000.  Dual pickups will have delivered a wider tonal range, although unsure about what was under the hood.

    Nice.

I've had both SB900 and SB1000. I must agree with you. I always found there was only I really great tone setting on the 1000 selector, the rest I rarely used. Personally I found the 900 more tonally  flexible.  I also prefer the SB-R and Elite necks, wider at the dusty end and with pretty inlays!

Gobsmacked this is still here. Mike is a great guy. I bought his SB-R60!

Note that the control tapers are designed so that there is a smooth increase in volume throughout the entire rotation. many amps use a taper that makes most of the range of control happen in the first 50% of the control's rotation. To that casual observer, this makes an amp appear louder when comparing using knob position only. The downside to this is that the range of real world adjustment is not as wide or smooth acting.

Many thanks for your comments and info. I thought the volume control may be more linear. TBH I never use the master vol on my Subway 800 above 11 or 12 oclock max. So point taken and I will endeavour to be less "casual" in my future observations! 😂🤣😂

I love the entire Mesa bass amp range and the relative price reduction in UK, does makes them far more competitive and accessible. Can't wait to try and compare the WD & TT. All I need is a few gigs and a green light to travel to UK!

  13. Well I got a Subway 800+ at what I thought was a great price from Andertons a couple of years back about 250 off RRP it was actually cheaper than the Subway 800, may even have been a pricing error? These new prices are brilliant and even blow that bargain away!. I love the features and tone of the Mesa Subways. Though they do not seem as loud as Markbass and Quilter 800s I own. Looking forward to hear BC reviews of the TT800. May even buy one if gigs ever resume!
