Unless you are the name soloist there is no room in an orchestra for anything other than technical correctness. Or at least no room for an interpretation that differs from the instruction of the conductor.

Agreed. I obviously didn't express myself very well so I'll try again it wasn't the musicians/arrangement, rather the original composition. The conductor and musicians can only do so much. I'm really struggling to communicate what I mean but it goes beyond music let alone any particular genre.

Those classical people will get a job in music playing works by other people.

I hope so, cos there's maybe one piece per concert where I pause from making origami animals with the programmes.

Having said that I really think Spaniel should go for it if they can, and they'll certainly come out of it a totally different person/musician. I would think Jazz is probably immune from dead hand of compositional, technical correctness anyway.

  3. If you have the opportunity and can afford it then go for it.

Never forget that GOOD music comes from the heart and soul, I've listened to a fair of technically correct modern classical stuff by conservatoire graduates which is utterly soulless. On the other hand a couple of local jammers have put together a song which is f'cking brilliant, one is a chippy and the other is a care assistant.

  4. Pretty sure my bass is coming from the continents so will be very surprised if it's here before the New Year. will update with my experiences when it gets here.

  5. Thanks, I'll get on with ordering the new bass and case then and be an utter PITA round the house until they arrive.

Ibanez SR400-DEB and Fame Hard case to keep it in. Then off to a local luthier to de-fret.

Nearest decent bass place for me is miles away in Glasgow or Edinburgh, doesn't stop me dropping into the local music shop for a play.

  6. finally found the bass I'm after with these folk, not bought an instrument online, just wondering if anyone has any experience with them before I pull the trigger on my GAS, looking at a bass and hard case, cheers

  7. cunning plan to be able to sign up for the 2020 abstinence has fallen at the first hurdle, I thought if I got it ordered this year it wouldn't count for 2020, no-one has what I'm after available or I'd have pulled the trigger tonight 🙄

  9. Ukes are the same. I buy instruments for the effect/sound I'm looking for, I've got a third baritone Uke on its way which I'll tune to GCEA make playing along with other ukes a hell of a lot easier as everything is arranged for that tuning, of my 3 current bases the fretless uke bass gives a nice old fashioned sound and is sweet to play but a cab be a bit temperamental, the acoustic is great for noodling and working things out, the Ibanez just puts a bloody great smile on my face I plan fo add a fretless Ibanez in the next couple of months so I can have the power of the electric with the flexibility of the Uke bass. After that I THINK/hope I'll run out of GAS. For now my aspirations are way beyond my liability. 😜
