So was informed that promoter was providing backline for gig this Friday just gone. OK so no surprises there, but brought LMii 500 head & 2x10 cab just in case.

I play very straightforward (boring?) P basses, with no pedals, so plug in and play.

Found, to my surprise, an Orange Crush 100 combo waiting for me & support bands to use. It was DI'd to desk along with mic'd

Now this thing had to "compete" with 2 (loud) electric guitars, drums, keys, 3 backing vocalists & mandolin. I don't have bass through monitors, just lead singer's guitar & vox, but thought I would have to on this occasion.

I was going to swap it out for my rig for guaranteed "heft", but thought "I'll give it a go".

I was proven very wrong! This thing was immense, with loads of headroom. Held it's own on stage, without dialing in too much on the master volume. Very impressive tone and a bit of grit on hand.

Made me think about the wattage/power needed for reasonable on stage volume. My LMii very rarely goes above 3 on master.

Anyway, hats off to the Crush combo, you served me well and I love the colour!!

I have an orange Crush 100 for my home noodling and practice and they are a fantastic combo. I have a different orange rig for live. I was contemplating selling it. I have wondered whether  the crush would be man enough for small pub gigs etc, so it was nice to see your thread 😊

What music is your fave style? Find a scene of originals on that circuit, and get known. When we started our originals punk band our expectations weren`t that much at all, Tues night multi-band gigs playing to just the other bands, no money etc. Way different, there`s a good punk scene and we`ve managed to put out 3 albums, played 8 different countries so far (ok, England is one of them), done festivals etc. So find that scene, talk to the bands, keep an eye on them on Facebook, when an opening appears go for it. I`ve had more fun, and achieved more in this band than in all of my others put together.

I’m in same boat as the op. I keep scanning musicians wanted sites, I’ve advertised myself, I’ve even tried forming a band. I love punk I must admit. But I’ve had no luck whatsoever. I’m finding also there is a lot of ageism in the ads.

im hopeful something will come up, but I’m not into blues bands or covers bands and it seems the market place I get most offers from.

    help!!!!!!!!!!!

@CyberBass Well done mate, fantastic bass. I was in there myself looking at Ibanezs a week back and I asked the guy if I could try the MJM, just because I'd seen the MJM video and fancied getting one before. I loved the way they've worn the neck and frets so it instantly feels comfortable and played-in. Looks ace too, bet it sounds fab. I'll bet you can't put it down 🙂

It is a great bass, and your right it’s hard to put it down and when I do put it down I keep looking at it lo sado yes 😊

  4. I haven’t played an original vintage one in many years, but what I can say if you compare this to the moder jp mustang it’s polar opposites. The JP is very modern sounding where this is a vintage sound with focus and depth. I prefer it to the Japanese mustang I owned, again it feels and sounds more vintage. If you get the chance try one out, I really recommend it.

in terms of it being roadworn, it is done in such a way it looks natural, it looks genuine roadworn. The head stock look like it’s hit the cymbals and the wear looks like natural wear. The dings etc all look like decades of wear and tear and use. It’s a gone beast it is.

  5. I’ve got a fender pj bass and this bass is a totally different class to it. Such a great tone and quality. I have no regrets purchasing. I now have two road worn basses, a Mike Dirnt and now the JMJ Mustang 😊

  6. The gig bag is a short scale fender one, but not the basic one. The Fender site says the strings are 9050L, which would indicate long scale strings, however, on my bass the strings going into the post has green binding on, so I’m guessing they have changed the strings at point of manufacture. I would love to know myself what they use so I can get a spare set.

  7. Went into PMT Bristol to pick up the Orange Terror Bass Mk2 and while I was there did the fatal mistake of going to bass section. I could hear a bass being played that just oozed buttery warm yummy bass tone and went over to see the bass salesman noodling away on a Fender JMJ Mustang Bass, started chatting to him about it. So he let me have a play, the neck plays like butter, the output amazing from the Seymour Duncan mustang pick up, and fender flats as standard. it is an amazing bass. Needless to say I ended up leaving the shop with it. Oh well Christmas presents to family is way overrated anyway lol. Oooops I’m in trouble!

  8. For Sale is my fantastic Orange OB1-500 Bass amp in good condition. It comes with gig bag (pictured), power lead and orange foot switch. These amps are fantastic. Very reliable amp. These are class A/B solid state amps that won’t let you down unlike some Class D amps. Only selling because of upgrade. These sell for around £660 new so grab yourself a bargain.

Collection from Bristol preferred, but will courier at additional cost.

    Here’s some info:

The OB1-500 is a Bass head with a difference. For years bassists have been combining guitar and bass amps to remarkable effect, adding harmonics and layers of overdrive from a guitar amp to their core bass tone in pursuit of the ultimate live sound.

The key to the OB1's unique sound is Orange's footswitchable Blend circuit which adds gain and increased harmonic content to the upper registers of the input signal. The lower frequencies and clean signal are left alone, staying warm and clear. Punch in the Blend control to achieve anything from a transparent clean boost, to all-out filthy grind.

    Sound Blend options

With the OB1 you can split the input instrument signal into two separate paths. One side amplifies the clean signal, with all the clarity you would expect from Orange. The other adds up to two stages of distortion to the upper harmonics only, controllable via the amp's Gain knob. These two elements can be combined using the amplifier's Blend control which adjusts the mix between clean and dirty. The Blend control can then be remotely engaged or defeated using the optional footswitch.

The Gain and Blend's range allows for almost anything, from a subtle level boost to cut through the mix, added girth and presence at moderate settings to fatten up chorus passages, to fully saturated savagery at the extremes. However you dial it, the OB1 always maintains the critical low end definition even at its' dirtiest.

    Active EQ

The OB1’s highly responsive active three band EQ has been meticulously voiced for maximum effect with minimal fuss. The EQ section is located after the Gain and Blend dials take effect, allowing full control over their massive sonic range. The Bass and Middle controls feature +/-15dB of boost or cut, whilst there is a range of +/- 20dB on the Treble control.

    Rack Mountable

The OB1 Series are rack mountable amps, suitable for 19" cases (2U). Enclosed in a rugged power coated steel chassis the fascia is finished in Orange's classic 'pics only' styling.

    Specifications

Controls: active/passive switch, gain, blend, bass, middle, treble, volume, footswitch input, mains switch

speaker outputs: (speakon), 1/4" line output, balanced output with ground lift switch

We should hopefully be able to put the B string question to bed pretty quickly - either @CyberBass has a 5 string, or Dood will no doubt cover off when he does his review.

    +1 ^^

It's ok, I've had to put up with plenty of ribbing from fellow BCers about Markbass "bumble-bee" colouring over the years...and then they quietly remark about just how reliable and well made the gear is :)

I am unable to comment regarding 5 string basses through cab as I only play 4’s. The basses I use through the rig are: Fender Mike Dirnt roadworn, Fender JP Mustang and Orange O Bass and I mainly play with a pick with finger style also, and mainly punk or rock and it can eat low E’s and detuned all day without a problem or deterioration in sound quality. They really shift air.

if dood can’t clarify, there are plenty circulating in the retailers to test out, and I do recommend at least demoing them. I am more than happy with them.

I’ve always found Orange stuff to be a bit catch 22 myself.

It’s orange. I’m not sure orange would be my first choice of cab/amp colour. So they do some stuff in black. But then it says orange on it - and people are like “why does your black speaker say orange when it’s black?!”

Mind you, I know quite a few people who would say I have a Barefaced cheek for calling myself a bass player...

I don’t care what it says on either a cab, an amp or headstock of the bass, let your set up do the talking 😊👍.

if it sounds good you’ll soon get compliments.

Very interested to hear what else you considered or have previously owned on the cab front and how these new Orange cabs stack up?

I’ve owned many set ups with cab combinations including:

accugroove el whappo and Barefaced Super 12, but all with different heads and all were and are of a much higher purchase price point than the orange cabs.

what I can say is the orange cabs are extremely well constructed, rear ported and lite at 11.83kg each. The cabs don’t take up a lot of room on the back seat of your car, so their easy to transport.

They pair perfectly with my orange ob1-500 and can handle whatever I throw at it volume wise without deterioration in quality of sound.

I know it is subjective and my pairing and choice may and will not be for everyone, but to my mind, my wallet (especially as I got £100 saving off retail price because I bought two), my ears I am extremely happy with my purchase and set up.

Not sure if that helps but I recommend at least demoing them at retailer.
