There was (well, still may well be) a High Wycombe R'n'B band called The Mafia that went through many iterations throughout the years but was led by a chap called John MacKay, who played a Wal - made in town, of course - and the classic line-up featured Chris Dennis and Mark "The Thunder From Windsor" Freeman.  All three were superb musicians and their sets were always brilliant.  Often they'd be joined by local faces onstage, one of whom was known as American John, an African-American gob-iron player of serious mettle.

One time the band, plus American John, were playing at the Flint and there was some kind of ruckus between two groups (something is telling me local yoofs and bikers, but I could be wrong) as the band were breaking down and packing their gear back into their vehicles.  Much glass was broken, and it escalated to the point where the cops were called, and Thames Valley's finest arrived just as American John was making his way out with some gear, doing his best to avoid the flying glasses, traffic cones and fists.  They screamed up in a van, leapt out, grabbed John and buggered off, leaving the scrap to continue.

As they threw him in the van he was heard to ask "Is this some kind of Black thing?" as the poor bloke was the only non-white face present.  He'd not been involved in the fighting at all, but was the only arrest made.

That's quite a story, reminds me of Constable Savage from Not the 9 O'Clock News fame.

  2. I will admit I had a slight preference for the Mercalli sound over the Decision P when I tried them both out in Merchant City Music.  Both sounded good, but the appearance of the Decision P swung it for me.  The sort of music my covers band plays suits the Decision P well too.

I would imagine Reverend decided to retire the Decision and bring out the Decision P due to the Decision looking a bit odd, with two mismatched pick ups.

The Glasgow stores are great too. Bought my synth from them a couple of months ago & they price matched it, the case & the stand.

I bought some headphones from them a couple of weeks ago, and the 'bass basement' in the adjacent shop has a fantastic selection of basses.

  4. This lovely amp is for sale, as I now have 4 heads and this won't get used as much as my others.

Its output is 350 watts into 4 or 2.67 ohms and 175 watts into 8 ohms.

It has a nice form factor, fitting neatly on top of my Barefaced One10 and it appears to be in perfect condition.

It has two contours, one a mid scoop, the other a warm lower mid bump. The EQ has a semi parametric mid knob.

The DI has buttons for 1) ground lift, 2) pre/post eq and 3) mic/line level

There are 1/4" inputs for 'Aux in' and headphones, so it's a great little practice amp as well as a gigging amp.

Currently these only seem to be available from Bass Direct, who charge £499 for a new model, so this is a bargain.

I live in Barnet, close to where the M25 meets the A1, so if you live in the London area, or Herts, Essex, Beds or Bucks, I'm not too far away.  More than happy to let anyone come over and try it out.  Collection from Barnet or postage is possible as I have the original box and foam inserts etc.

Well I haven’t got a current one and have no desire for a new one, I far prefer basses.

My missus thinks I'm not a good listener and I don't understand her feelings.

If she was a bass she would know I am a good listener and I know how she feels.

My London Borough did noticeably worse - Tommy Steele, Max Bygraves, Souixse Sound, Florence Welch and Charlie Chaplin (who wrote NAT King Cole's hit Smile).

We also had the Richardsons and Mad Frankie Fraser.

Bit crap on the music front is Southwark but up there with Hackney for violent criminals.

  7. I was born in Hackney borough, as were|:

Sid Vicious, Charlie Harper, Marc Bolan, Paloma faith, Leona Lewis, half of Iron Maiden, Buster Bloodvessel and countless rappers and DJs that I've never heard of.

The Kray twins and Dickk Turpin were also born in Hackney, so we have a pretty good selection of famous violent criminals too.

Edit: Mr Turpin the highwayman, Basschat sensor doesn't like his name.

  8. My dealings with them over the last few years have been positive, even when I've had to get replacements for faulty stuff.  Just recently visited the shop in Glasgow; it has a basement dedicated to bass!

Drybell Unit 67 might fit the bill except it's not cheap and you lose the DI.

Seems to be a compressor, not a pre amp.

I've been using this for a while now - a bit of a Swiss Army Knife and a small footprint. May be discontinued but they show up 'pre-loved'... https://atomicamps.com/bass-box/

Looks about the same size as my Spectradrive and is certainly bigger than the M81

But thanks for taking the time to reply fellas.

    Tech 21 Q Strip?

Too big for what I currently want a pre amp for but should I dust off my larger board I might try out some Tech 21 stuff.

EWS Tri-Logic 2 or Tri-Logic 3 both can have the bass at 100hz (I think - 2 is fixed, 3 is switchable between 40 and 100). It’s the same size as the MXR but you lose the DI.

I'd never heard of these.  The lack of DI isn't necessarily a deal breaker as I could always just get a stage bug but that ups the price.  They don't seem to be available on these shores at the moment anyway.

Might work out better and more cost effective in the long run to upgrade to a bigger board. That way you could put your Spectradrive and Chorus on it now and avoid the need to compromise/limit your choice on any future pedal upgrades due to space.

You are probably right.  Having a small board is quite convenient with the tiny 'stages' we play on but a bigger board would probably fit in most of the time.

When i finally managed to talk to someone they had the cheek to say there wasn't a van due in my area that day so they haven't sent it.

You'll have to let us know how you managed this.  I had a pedal I sold to someone on here go missing and never managed to get in touch with a human.

And it's a yes from this Reverend bass owner. I've got a Triad (bought from exactly the same place about a year ago) and I enjoy it very much.

I was keen on a Triad too, unfortunately, this last consignment from Reverend did not contain any.  They said they are never sure what Reverend is going to send them!

    Two notes

    C.A.B. M

That isn't what I'm after.  I need something the size of an M81, or smaller.  No need for bells and whistles.  I'll probably end up with an M81, unless someone suggests something better, but I'd prefer to have the bass EQ set higher than 40Hz.

Currently my Spectradrive  does the job but I want to get my chorus pedal back on the board and I need a bit more room.

  16. Hi all.

I'm after a pre amp for my board to replace the TC Electronic Spectradrive I own.  I want something smaller, like an MXR M81.  It should have input, output and EQ knobs, 1/4" input and output, a DI out.  I'm not interested in any dirt or other features.

Apart from the MXR M81, does anything else out there exist that fits the bill?

I'm betting 8.5 lbs or less

    Correct.

Though not completely accurate, using the 'me on the bathroom scales vs me on the bathroom scales and bass' technique, I measured this bass to be 3.8kg, or about 8lb 6oz (8.38 lbs).
