1. Hahah, just yankin you're chain. I am the greatist bay-cyst
2. i love flea and i love this jam. </gay> Crap like this got me into playing the damn 4-string baise. He's inspiring for teenaged-testosterone-filled-bastards like me...... ....doesnt make him the best bassist in the world tho. Everybody knows it's Faithless :brow: .
3. Thank you guys I'm starting to understand what you're saying a bit more.
Then add a Bass note to the double stops. Your choice of note,
When it comes to choosing the note, could it be any note from the scale? or are there more/less limits to what note can harmonise? Is it possible to play chords/arpeggios that dont involve the 3rd and 5th note? (e.g. I play notes 1, 4 and 7) Oh and has anyone else given my piece a try? ^_^ Ahmed
4. I apologise for being a tit but there's a lot i didnt understand there
You could try thinking modally and in c major to start with.
I have no idea what that means.
Basically, don't use and sharp or flats (black notes on the piano), so just A B C D E F G and that should shound nice(ish) as a starting point.
Why shouldn't I use those?
because sometimes your using a minor 3rd (i.e in the second bar) and sometimes your using a major 3rd
How do i tell the difference between a major and a minor? (by ear and by tab?) Whats wrong with using majors and minors together? Thanks Ahmed
5. Hello, I got home at 1AM, the family was asleep and I was lonely and depressed. So the obvious solution was to strum some chords I improvved some crap, but being ignorant in theory I don't know if these chords work together or not. I know by ear that there's something not right with these chords - but i don't know what it is and what to do with it. I tried tabbing it out on guitar pro, the rhythm's completely wrong but this was the best I could do. Any suggestions? Cheers
6.
I say keep working on it. Either get a teacher, or if you have the technology, post a video of yourself up here. S.P.
I find it quite depressing when i try to play it. ive been playing for over a year, if i slap it sounds like ive been playing bass for a week. My webcam gets absolutely no sound from the amp. I've tried many times to record directly through my soundcard on pc but doesn't work. cant afford a teacher
7. Hello, For a while ive been trying to master slap and pop since im such a fan of flea. at first i was awful at it, but i blamed having the wrong type of bass. I got myself a jazz and im still pretty crap at it. when i pop it just sounds like im picking it strongly...if i apply more force i just get a really loud twang. when i slap i get more sound coming out of the thumping against the fretboard then i do than coming from the amp. (if i put the volume up it just sounds too loud) So basically what i end up with is a bit of trash - it's a shame 'cause i wont be able to work on so many RHCP b-lines. After a few hours of watching slap bass solos on the ol' yuutoobe, i'm starting to think slap bass is a piece of trash itself - just too many notes thumped and mashed per second. i came to the conclusion that id rather hear a fingerpicked solo with lots of growly distortion. This is the kind of slap bass i just love - it's a shame i cant mimic it and then change it into my own. I guess my point is, since i love some slap bass lines, should i try to work on it or should i just forget about it 'cause im never gonna get it?...and if i do would there even be much use to it? am i disadvantaged cos i cant tap or pick? (i can only fingerpick...im good at strumming chords too ) Chearses
8.
I normally play parts of a few different songs to see how they suit each one. Normally I'll play Bombtrack by RATM, Schism by Tool and any Metallica. Mind you they're normally the first things that come into my head when I pick up a bass
thats exactly what i do!
9.
Lol I like that. When your arms are so long your fingers are nearly level with your kneecaps?
...and one other thing is so long it reaches your knee cap :brow: .... ...your belly
10. Hiya, I have realised that i dont pluck the strings directly perpendicular to them (not completley vertical) but rather at an angle. Is there any problem with this? I noticed that i dont do this if im resting my thumb on my jazz's bridge pickup, my plucking is completely straight and i tend to apply more attack. In addition, i noticed that when playing on the bridge pickup my fingers dont curl as much, but seem to be more stretched out and flick more, whilst with neck plucking they curl up and pluck with less strength. Any ideas?
11. Hiya, When playing to some songs ive noticed many basslines that have nice rhythyms and grooves but never change, as in it will simply be one or two bars repeated through the whole verse with bits of variations and fills to make it interesting. sometimes, the guitar chords will be changing (or whatever else is in the song). now does this mean the bass is not changing key, or does it not have any key in it? How would you know which note the bass part should be based on (no pun intended) whilst the other instruments/vocals are changing? I hope that makes sense If ya don't understand what i mean here's an example. In this song, the guitars doing some wierdo crap in the background. you've only got bass, drums and rap vocals that mainly audible. since the rapping and drums arent exactly in any key (or are they?) how does the bassist choose what notes to play? also, listen to the verse in this song I have a huge feeling ive completely misunderstood and missed the point here.
12. Hello, Please excuse my crap knowledge on electronics for bass. I was reccomended to get a pre-amp for my new squier VMJ in order to make it into a beast for slapping. I have a few questions about preamping: a) what kind of preamp would make the VMJ great for slapping? b ) does using active pickups count as preamping the signal? c) do effects pedals also count as preamps? d) i hear you can connect your bass to a preamp and then to your PC's soundcard, allowing you to record with much better quality - is this possible? cheers i should be shot for my ignorance
13. I'm thinking of getting coated strings due to their longer life. I assume i'll still have to clean them to keep their life long? What do people suggest i use, WD40? Cheers
14. oh alright. cheers then. looking more forward to it now
15. After playing for over a year now, i think it's time to finally learn some proper music theory. I wanna be able to improvise and jam some music properly on my own and with other musicians (mainly guitarists), as opposed what i've been doing which is just developing on bass covers of songs. I think i'm able to develop some nice rhthyms and grooves off the top of my head, but i find it hard to figure out which notes should be played, what chord change to follow, etc. The guy teaching me some theory is one of my best mates and he's a pianist, not a bassist. would this be a problem? is there anything in music theory that's 'bass-specific' that i should look out for? Along with learning theory, what else should I work on? Cheers
16. hmm alright cheers everyone. so which set of strings should i buy then? i wanna a good slap tone out of it. These elixirs? or these warwick black labels? oh and what guages would be best for slapping n popping? lower the better?
17. I drew a sketch of this pic a while back...
18. Hiya, After many of months of playing the same strings that came on my artcore, i realised they were getting too dull and thought i'd try boiling them. So i shoved them in some hot water and watched bits of camel crap fall off, i strung them back on and loved the fresh metallic sound they brought. As expected, after a couple of weeks of playing they lost that 'zing' and ended up sounding like rubber. I finally took them off and replaced them with ernie ball super slinkies and loved the new life they brought back to the bass's sound. However, after a few weeks they lost their metallic sound and became dull like my old ones, ive been forced to boil them a few times in order to bring it back. Why are the strings doing this? Ive noticed my fingers sweat an incredible amount when i play (too much RATM gets the blood pumping ), is that the culprit for making my strings dull? Cheers
19.
Iv been playing my Bass for nearly 8 months now, between revision (I have my A2 exams at the moments! :S).
haha you're exactly like me. i've been playing for a year...most of my practice comes from my A-level study leaves I've got the ashdown after ten
20. haha nice one thenameistaken. and yes i do understand what you mean ash_sak. a few guitarists have offered to jam with me - i've only seriously jammed with one, mainly cos we were preparing a cover of Metallica's 'Orion' to play for our 6th form leaver's day (and then i got expelled...) i admit, that did inspire me and push me to be of standard of the guitarist who's been playing since he was conceived or something. I just bought myself a squier vintage jazz so that should help me get more into slap and tap and discover the new sounds of the beast. i'll try to do some jamming with other musicians .....and then buy a 12 string and play in a prog rock band......
21. I think im progressing quite slowly. i tend to have phases where i learn a lot of songs and some new techniques, and then suddenly stop for a few weeks. i would love to be better at slapping (i believe thats a problem with my bass) and tapping. i have a lot of musician friends but they're all g-tard loving knobs who dont appreciate bass.
