  1. Cool thanks @jose - seems like I (and She) lucked out then 😀
  2. Thanks Gents - appreciate the replies - seems my my other half is going to have some very nice strings on her acoustic
  3. Gents, I'm new to this bass malarkey and bought some medium D'addario Flatwound Chromes ..for a P-Bass - Doh! My other half has just bought a 32" scaled acoustic bass from this parish - looks like my mediums should fit, but are they a sensible thing to sting up an acoustic bass with ..failing that, I see a Hofner in my future.. 😋
  4. Glad you’ve got a solution (the main thing!) but bit odd that the power transformer in the amp isn’t doing that for you? ..it should isolate the amp’s internals so there’s no direct connection within the amp to the power
  5. What sort of amp are you using? I can’t immediately speak for SS amps, but valve amps all run on DC and the power goes through a load of capacitors to covert it from AC before it sees a signal. This ‘cleans’ the supply for you and I’d be surprised if a SS class D type amp wasn’t doing the same? Power line filters are a load of BS to be honest - have them and I’ve tried the same kit with and with it and they make no difference. Other likely causes of interference are flourescant lights, microphonic valves and bad earthing Hope that helps?
  6. Quilly, what's the issue with the valves - are you trying to source specific NOS valves? For current production stuff, I use Karltone. For NOS, there's a cabal of sellers around Billingshurst in West Sussex who you can find on Fleabay for are pretty reputable
  7. Gents, thanks for all the input and feedback - really helpful! Given my preference for the classics in the guitar would, I suspect there’s a Ray in my future - just trying to temper the GAS until I find the right thing ..trying! 🙂 When did the 2018 Rays come out? Gibson seem to launch around September for the following year - do MM do something similar?
  8. On some guitar amps, the coupling caps will be of a lower value and act as a high pass filter - swapping to a higher value (1000mf from memory) would give you the full frequency spectrum. Assuming you want as little distortion as possible, running lower gain valves in the preamp will cut any preamp phase distortion down. You might also bias the amp right in the sweet spot to prevent any unnecessary clipping ..but this is all very much fine tuning - enjoy! 🙂
  9. The Sabre is interesting - tad smaller body and a 2 pot preamp from what I can see Does the Ray HH have the classic Ray tones on the bridge?
  10. Thanks for the input Gents I'm assuming there's sufficient sonic space between a Ray and a P-Bass to justify having one of each (over and above any GAS-driven justifications if that's even possible? :-))
  11. Newbie with a newbie question.. I have much more experience with guitars than basses and in the guitar world, I’ve learnt to go with the classics, but I’d really welcome some sage advice I have a G&L L-100 US (Alder and Rosewood) which in my inexperienced hands , seems like a fantastic P-bass - it certainly ‘spoke’ to me much more than a variety of Fenders from Roadworn MIM to American Elite Ive just sold a guitar and I’m thinking of getting a Stingray ..I’m firstly assuming that an Ash & Maple ‘Ray would be a good compliment for the P-bass-alike? Assuming I’ve not crashed and burned at step 1, what do y’all think of the HH Stingray? ..will this give me classic Stingray tones PLUS some JB flavours and probably a bunch of things I don’t even appreciate yet, or does it compromise the classic tones too much? Finally, the G&L L2000 looks like an alternative to the ‘Ray HH, but is it? ..it looks possibly too different to give those classic tones? Really very finally, are there other options here that will scratch the itch? All help much appreciated SS
  12. H All, I'm Spence, long time guitarist and bass newbie I have a tonne of guitar equipment and recently thought it might be fun to get a cheap Vintage Jazz bass, put a 12" bass speaker into a guitar cab and run it through a 50w Blackface Fender It didn't sound too bad to my uneducated ears, but this weekend I decided I try a few more bases and opened up pandoras box ..I came away with a G&L L100 (US) and a little 10" practice bass amp So here I am, wet behind the bass ears, keen to learn and with burgeoning Bass GAS - Stingray's are definitely talking to me at the mo
  13. Cheers @Cato - appreciate the steer Limited hands-on experience as I write, but I’m planning on spending a fair amount of time trying basses out tomorrow, so trying to triage and determine which stores to target. For guitars, I like a neck at least an inch deep at the 1st fret and with really full shoulders (what’s called a ‘baseball bat U’ on a Telecaster I’m looking for classic tones, so something leaning heavily on the Fender classics seems a good shout to start with SS
  14. I’m a newbie, so please be gentle! I’m a long-standing guitarist buying my first bass - I’m drawn to the Jazz tone and flexibility, but I know from guitaring that I like the feel and resonance of chunky necks - a P-bass type of neck is more my thing ..so spending American Standard money or less, who makes something that I should take a closer look at? Cheers SS
