2.
I have a Classic player 60's Stratocaster in sonic blue. Weirdly it looks white in artificial light. So if you bought a jazz bass in sonic blue on stage it would actually look white.......just like the Squier CV Jazz. By the way here's a vid of John Paul Jones playing your dream bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xW84u4DOzE
fantastic vid of JPJ depping..love it mate.. and dont that gorgeous jazz kick the arse's out of the flying v and les paul
  3.
I don't think you'll manage to get the CV to sound exactly like the Highway but you might make it sound even better than it does. I have a CV Jazz and it is a great instrument but I'm also considering some upgrades. 1) I'm not changing the bridge, which is already a high mass bridge with brass saddles. 2) I'm planning to change the electrics for CTS pots, a Sprague capacitor, and a Switchcraft socket. 3) I'm going to change the pickups for (probably) a pair of Lindy Fralin Vintage Jazz (but maybe Wizard 64s or Fender Custom Shops - or lots of other possibilities depending on what you like).
all good stuff, thanks again blokes :-) the CV jazz is indeed a beautifull bass, well worthy of the upgrades
  4. that was my first decent bass! actually bought it out of a Kays catalogue back in the day...truly awesome sound(18volt active circuit i believe), and if i had any work and it was a bit less wouldnt hesitate...
  5. there all talking sense mate...just dont do it. we use a small Pa (powerworks..HK's cheaper option and a great little rig) in pubs all the time , a single powered sub and two tops with the bass drum just tickled through it a bit. in true time honoured drummer tradition/fashion in the fifteen years ive been playing with my bestmate blanty on drums he has been "borrowing" my D112 for this.... i knew this drummer once, he got done by the police for breaking into a five pound note...got let off though, first offence..... ho ho bloody ho...
  6.
Post Christmas bump
thats a lovely bit of kit but i too have nothing to trade :-( unless your interested in genesis push irons lol..
  7. errrrrrr.. wanted something lighter than me flightcased svt classic..so thinking was if its that good buy it then flog the ampeg.. so...i bought one from live music in peterborough, for a very reasonable £450, with its fabbo padded flightbag. in the shop it sounded awesome, like the unholy bastard child of a first gen point to point wired hiwatt and early ampeg ....had to have it at the gig that night it was plenty loud enough, but just didnt deliver the bottom end of me all valve ampeg..which was to be expected really. Dont think me mesa cab helped being a Ev loaded 4x10, there aint many amps can tame the bugger, a 2x15 may have made a world of difference but i aint got one.. if i was in a financial position to have it as a second amp would have undoubtably kept it, but can only afford one, so the ampeg stayed, and the orange went back to the shop next day. fantastic little amp. far better value for money than my ampeg was all those years ago.....but i guess i'll have to grow old (older)with the heavy 'un

    Mesa Boogie

love my Ev loaded diesel 4x10 cab to bits, paired to me SVT classic best fourbeeten ive ever heard IMHO. weighs a bleeding ton and then some, especially as mine is flightcased, but can just about lift/slide it into the back of the van on me todd. no pain no gain...

  11.
I agree with Mr. Foxen in that I usually tackle the bridge first when upgrading instruments. Pickups next. Bear in mind that if you are trying to replicate a much loved bass this is near impossible. If you simply wish to raise the game of the weaker instrument this is much more realistic. I wasn't that impressed with the handful of HWY1 instruments I tried but I know there is a lot of love for them. It could be that you've got a particuarly good one
...or dodgy fifty year old ears...
  12. good advice mate...is the badass bridge that much better? have tried altering the relief in the neck so the action is higher and the strings twang bassier acoustically but still cant get the deep bass tone the highway has
If you are really curious, get yourself some hardware swapping in to find where the tone is. I reckon the Badass is a major. Then the pickups.
13. buddy, i ran two amps for a while an after trying various expensive solutions bought a second hand roland gp8 guitar effects processor with pedal board(about a grand new back when it came out in the eighties!)for a hundred quid off me local shop and just used it as an active signal divider. worked brilliantly, and was good fun messing about with the effects when there was nothing on the telly..:-) when i sold it got me 100 sovs back too...
This is all brilliant, thank you guys. I suppose I've got a choice. Build something myself for about £160 and get exactly what I want, or just buy this: Altolink I suspect it will come down to the state of the bank balance post new year! The altolink is obviously the sensible option! Thanks again guys. Jon PS. Lfalex, if you ever want rid of your SVP let me know...
14. i absolutely love my highway one jazz bass, and swear it sounds better than a standard yank, or at least has the exact tone that i want. recently, i bought a squier classic vibe in white/tortoiseshell, which is a great little bass, but back to back the highway has it beaten(much as you would expect) hands down in terms of tone. highway ones are berluddy expensive now, at least 250 sovs more than mine was a few years back, so was wondering if there was a simple, straightforward way to make me classic vibe replicate thetone? visually, the highway one has its badass two bridge instead of the standard one but thats it. both got the smaller machine heads....both got alnico pick-ups but im guessing the yank ones may be better..or is it just the sum of everything( woods used, wiring etc) that makes for the sound? cheers dudes paul
  15.
Wouldnt mind knowing this too. I have been waiting for a decent wee 2x10 for a while to pop up at 4 ohms. Definitely interested.
dimensions and weight? good grief you lot are picky..... its big enough to house two ten inch speakers packed tightly together, weighs less than a 25kg bag of cement, takes a normal jack and it presently abides with me in peterborough .....
  16.
Greetings. I'm a bit worried about the phrase "my girlfriend won't let me.................." I think that you should take back the trousers! never heard of Lana Partridge????
howdy doody. lana partridge played some excellent mime bass along to gary numan as i recall..
  17.
Sold?
nope..still sitting here in all its GK loveliness..
  18.
Oh that's sexy! Whereabouts in North Lancs are you? I'm in Lancaster...and have no money!
aint it just though...stunning amp mate:)
  19.
Ramsay.. to Colne? Good god, she must have been something special!
lol she was. and bass players do generally havta work much harder than the rest of the band for their ladyjollies...;-)
  20.
see what i mean? the one on the right is this one, the older of the two by one year, and its interesting to see how many components are different just in that time span..these amps really were well built and then some the photo is high res so any tubeampheads on the forum can have a good ol forage..
someone from here is trying the selmer out next sat, so its off sale until then, as is the ashton
  21.
the ashton is suprisingly good, and was a steal when they first came out at under 200 squid, but now there over 300 in our local shop which is at bit too much really. the bloke who initially wanted the selmer has had a change of circumstances so its bumpety bump..its a fantastic amp, it really is, i just wish i could afford to have my ampeg hardwired like the selmer, the difference between that and a circuitboard is immeasurable
see what i mean? the one on the right is this one, the older of the two by one year, and its interesting to see how many components are different just in that time span..these amps really were well built and then some the photo is high res so any tubeampheads on the forum can have a good ol forage..
  22.
Haha, thanks. I saw it and just laughed my a$$ off. Not to sure about the Ashton, never heard much about those, but like you said, it's a practice amp, and I'm looking for something with real power and tonal quality, and from the little I have heard about Ashton, they aren't what I'm looking for.
