Hi from one Phill in Wales to another!

I'd love to try one of those "contra" bass guitars tuned down a whole octave from standard.

But can you play a Thunderbird and dance like the bassist from Freddie And The Dreamers?
No

I’ve always argued, that you can play any genre of music on any model of bass. In theory you can just own a P bass and play anything on it (except fretless obvs) but am I wrong? Do you have to have that Ken Smith 6 for the jazz stuff? Or that Gibson Blackbird for metal? Or that Hofner Beatle bass for your 60s cover band?
I’ve slapped some funk on a Thunderbird when that was the only bass to hand that night…..it wasn’t pretty, but it was ok?
Does one really need more than one bass….. regardless of your choice of material??? Or can one do it all?
😳
I do quite like slapping on a Thunderbird tbh

I've always said "you only need one bass" "you can do it all on the same one" too. It is nice to have different tonal options of course & to a certain extent, a want or feeling towards a bass for specific styles or genres - P Bass with flats for Motown or a Jazz for for some slap/Funk. So I guess it's the want, over the need in most circumstances IMO.
I've currently got 15 basses as of now for all different sounds, tones & even moods. Even tried to have a custom one built to be the "one bass that can do it all" (it can't!)
Slap a Hofner & tap on whatever It's down to what you like, what you hear & what you can reasonably get your hands on

This is one of my favourite designs. I would love to hear it played, there aren’t many demos out there.
I’m gonna do some recording with it later today 😌

Have some Optima RB Flats on my 72 Jazz, Pretty well suited to your above sound you're looking for. Not everyone's cup of tea & not suited to all musical adventures IMO

This was mine for a few months! Very eye-catching on most stages haha!
Bought it from Bass Bro's earlier in the year just for a laugh (plus the LED's) a great little stingray in general and an artist I was on tour with specifically requested I use I use it in the choreography of his show (turning the lights on etc)
It was custom painted & the LED's fitted by Sims for a guitar show years ago.

I can remember drooling over these on the Fender site in my youth! Did a great trade/cash with Will at Bass Bro's. Set up perfectly and such a great looking and classic sounding bass.
Low B is clear too and sound just like a good P bass should too! Giving it it's first run out tonight at a dep gig too!

Love/Hate here too for it. Bought a Pelham Blue one recently. It's definitely not a solid body and does have a unique sound to it too. 34 inch is pretty cool also. Kept rounds of mine to help it cut through (it didn't need to) Very bright to my ears with everything turned up but just a bit uncomfortable to play personally. Just not for me. No issue of feedback here though unlike some but try one out, you never know util you try

Only ever lent a bass to someone I didn't personally know once. All the kit was stolen sadly & the management team called me up looking for a bass for a funk band playing in Cardiff (found out it was AWB when the manager dropped their name very casually on the phone)
Gave me £20 a free ticket (sadly I couldn't go) and a signed album
