  1. Sire D5 that I bought new from Andertons when they first came out.

Beautiful roasted maple neck with roles fret edges. Plays like butter.

Classic vintage P bass sound from the single pickup.

No noticeable flaws or damage, in really nice condition. I think I have only gigged this once or twice, hence the reason for sale - it just doesn't get enough use to earn it's keep.

I would prefer a local pickup but I do have shipping boxes so I could ship it at cost (UK only).

    Price dropped to £220

Lefty MM Sterling on eBay, collect from Kings Lynn... No affiliation, just don't want to buy it myself!!! Somehow getting itchy for a new bass...

Yes I saw this. It looks lush! Roasted maple neck and a Sterling is nicer than a Stingray in my book. If I didn't already have too many basses I'd be driving down now.

Nice! Is there any volume difference between the P and J pups? My bitsa was lovely but I couldn't stand the big volume drop between the pups.

Not any more than their usually is with a passive PJ setup. The J in the bridge position is always a bit 'lightweight' for me - I never use it on its own - just blend it in with the P to get a bit of brightness. Same on a JJ for me TBH. Bridge pickup on its own never suited my kind of playing.

  4. Had a proper wiring job done by a local tech. Sounding great now.

quality mini pots, volume, blend, tone and decent jack. Tone is nice and linear. The P pickup is super fat and when you blend in the J pickup it just brings in a bit more clank and scoops the mids. Perfect for my crunchy rock tone!

  5. I was never totally happy with the sound of my Fender Aerodyne so I decided to pop in a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. Much more mid focused. Not sure the wiring is right though. Tone control doesn't really do what it should. I might buy a prewired loom.

Someone buy it before I do, please? I don't need it, I've got over years of GAS for one of these... But I've never seen one in such good condition priced so sensibly! No affiliation to the seller, just got five basses already and really don't want or need more!

    I'll help you out here.....

It's missing the scratch plate and although the seller mentions it there are no pictures.

    The tuners are pretty tarnished.

    The fretboard looks manky.

However, if I didn't already have one, I'd be all over it.

You look like a cartoon character in that picture, but guess that actually might had been your exact intention. :i-m_so_happy:

I'm pretty sure I didn't know what I was doing. I was only 15 or 16 at the time. 😳

Oooh Washburn Force ABT (B10?) ! I bought a blue one just the same from a local awesome bassist who also ran a Marshall stack of this bass gear, but his was the JCM 800 bass range. Still, such a punchy sound! Why do I need one of those basses again!!

Yes a B10. My first bass guitar. Bought for Christmas 1986 because the band I was in sacked the bass player and someone had to take over! Replaced in 1989 with a Washburn Status that I still have.

@kevham How Long did it take before you learned which way around to hold the bass?? ;D

Bizarre story - I'm not actually left handed. The ONLY thing I do left handed is play guitar.

When I was a kid, my dad had a left handed Les Paul and it didn't lend itself to turning upside down so I learned to play it left handed. By the time I realised my mistake, it was too late!

Great Basses love the maple fingerboard 👌👌

That's a really striking sparkly finish - lovely! And the neck looks great. It's definitely one of the best things about Sire basses (along with the price!)

I've had 3 Sires. A first gen V7 (really nice except for the tuner that fell to bits), a D5 that has the best feeling neck I've ever had and a U5 which had to go back because the fret edges were so poor.

    I still have the D5 - it's a lovely thing to play.

  11. For giggles, I took my wee Marshall guitar head along to and rehearsal tonight and plugged it into my Ashdown 4x10 and used it as a rehearsal rig.

Instant valve warmth goodness on the clean channel and loud enough for the rehearsal room. I could probably gig this with PA support.

On the dirty channel it was just insane (in a kinda good way).

Certainly made me want to get a proper valve amp again.

Lovely basses. Can you tell me where you got the replacement pickguard from?

Sorry John I don't know - it came with the bass. It's not the best fit though.

I've previously had pickguards made using the original as a template by Jack's Instruments in Manchester. Did a really good job. Not sure if he still does it though.

  13. Pending a new family photo, here are the latest additions. A 2022 Fender Player Plus (white) and a 2021 Fender Player (black). The black one has an aftermarket pickguard and the hi mass bridge.

Has anyone tried importing any bass from the EU recently?

Bought a bass from Thomann a few weeks back. Price quoted in was price paid.

As it happened I had to return it. That was not without some logistical issues but that is a different story.

A fretless Wal for £700 in the early 2000s.

Now that was a real bargain!

I tried a fretless Wal in 1989 - it was £999 but I couldn't play fretless so didn't go for it. Bought my Washburn Status instead (which I still have).

  16. Yep. I think they've made some mistakes with these. They should have stuck with maple boards and should have a passive tone (like Sire do).

On the plus side, it does mean it is quite different from a Player series P-bass.

I've noticed it's also slightly heavy although I am comparing it to my Overwater (swamp ash) and my Aerodyne Jazz.
