  1. Getting ready for a gig tonight and decided to clear out one of my lead bags.

Here's a selection of set lists I've been given for dep gigs I've done over the last couple of years.

Not sure whether it will be fully legible, but all kinds of everything on there, you name it, I've maybe played it.................

  2. I'm surprised this topic hasn't attracted more comments and opinions - it's a fascinating concept.

Both Jacob Collier and Adam Neely have put up videos with fairly clear explanations of the musical mechanics of this idea, but maybe the easy win would be for harvesting fresh songwriting ideas.

How about this negative harmony version of the rickrollers favourite.

  3. Declining an invitation to audition for a backing band for a new up and coming artist in the late 70's, as it clashed with my long awaited driving test.

.....and that person was Elvis Costello.............. 😳

we often resign ourselves to playing the best that we can, but don't appreciate how a little extra, done frequently will lead to big improvements over time.

    Absolutely agree with this.

There's always so much to learn, and so many ideas to try.

I usually try and play for about an hour a day, and for example my current 'thing' is playing along to, and creating fresh basslines for house music from the noughties onwards, using continuous mixtapes from YouTube. (Maybe try Book Club Radio and a DJ called Tinzo if you're curious)

I've come up with a lot of bass lines and fresh rhythm patterns from this, and I deliberately try and make it continuously challenging so it's a bit of a workout.

More fun than daytime TV or weeding the garden 🙂👍

enthusiasm, learning parts for rehearsals, practice before gigs, maintaining communication with band mates, turning up on time reliably etc.

In covers bands, it's band members not learning parts prior to rehearsal that has always bugged me the most.

Hey, let's all hang around in an expensive rehearsal studio for a good 20 minutes while the guitarist listens to the song for the first time........... 🥺👎

I wasn't familiar with the band or the tune, but going on this example, I think I'll dig them.

Knower are up there in my favourites list - always creative and original.

If you're looking through their back catalogue, then this gem from around 2016 takes some beating - and here it's Louis Cole on synth bass and then Tim Lefebvre digging in on his P bass

  7. That's a helluva lot of fairly complex material to learn in just 48 hours, so maybe the truth is he had a tip off about the possibility of getting this gig a few weeks prior, but only finally confirmed 48 hours before the first gig.

And if he really only had 48 hours to learn that much material then the guy is clearly superhuman............😲

How do you post YouTube videos on here so they they embed properly instead of just showing as a link?

Maybe it's something to do with your browser ? I'm using Firefox, and I'm no techie, but all I do is:

Go to the YouTube video I want

Highlight and copy the YouTube address shown

Go back to this site, Control and V (or right click and Paste)

Press Enter. (maybe you're not doing this)

If that's not working for you, then maybe post your query again and maybe someone with more tech knowledge will be able to advise.

    Gateshead Friday night

    Glasgow Saturday lunchtime

    Blackpool Saturday evening

A rather long time ago (1970's) I was working with a pro band and our agent decided it would be perfectly sensible to book us to play Aviemore Ski Centre in Scotland on the Friday night and then to play Barnstaple in Devon the following night.

This was in the days of paper road maps and 65mph (flat out) Transits. None of us silly kids in our flared trousers and platform shoes had noticed just how far this journey was until we checked out of the hotel at Aviemore on the Saturday morning - sat in the van, got the road map out and realised we had a 600 mile drive ahead of us.

I seem to remember we arrived at the gig about 9pm. Still played, though 😵👍  So silly !

This is how a computer hears and then notates Madonna's "Like a Prayer". I'm liking it - better than the original in a WTF freejazz sort of way. Sounds like some of my own offerings 😁

It sounds like Madonnas backing band had failed to turn up to the gig so she had to use a bunch of local beginners to help out.

Absolutely hilarious, especially the keyboards and the random percussion towards the end ! 😁👍
