    Skype versus face2face lessons?

    So I'm thinking about getting some more lessons and am toying with the idea of Skype to open up more possibilities when choosing a teacher and to not be limited by geography. For those of you who have studied via Skype (or taught) I just wondered how you found not being physically in the same room? Was it still a worthwhile experience or would you say face to face is the only way?

    I guess the next question is, if Skype is worth trying, who would your dream teacher be? I love the idea of potentially having access to all be best bass educators in the world and have a few ideas about people I'd try and get some time with but who would you choose and why???

    Going for the basic PA1-jb I think on the reccomendation of the builder. I too am not really an active kind of guy (very inactive in fact! ;-) and usually just play a passive P or J but I thought I might like an active option... Can't really see a downside as long as I can switch to passive if I fancy it which no doubt I will :-) I'm thinking if I keep it simple to dial in there's more of a chance I might use the active option though...

    Having been to Mike Walsh's zoot workshop a few times I can vouch for the outrageous quality of his builds. Amazing attention to detail... I'm sure this would be a real players bass. Unfortunately 5s are not for me but very good luck with the sale. Someone will bag a bargain!

    So I've always been a staunch jazz and p bass enthusiast. I have too many and really don't need any more instruments but lately keep looking at music man basses and thinking I might like to try one. (Never have!)

    So, how can you convince I need one? Why do you love them? Which models should I check out and why? I'd probably be more interested in higher end rather than cheaper lines simply as I wouldn't want to end up upgrading later if I do buy one.

    Relic basses...

    I have a few relics and feel differently about each...

    75 p bass... Given to me by a musical legend that I take great care of (the bass not the musical legend, although he is getting on!)

    75 jazz heavy relic that I am not even slightly bothered if I ding...

    Custom shop 61 that the certificate says relic but has only 2 small chips and loads of sexy nitro checking... I'd be gutted if I damaged it!

    Limelight relic (fake!) that I even let my 3 year old play around with. It's a great bass but a few dings won't make the slightest difference.

    For me it's about the emotional attachment of a particular instrument that makes it more precious.

    Bass Ramp for Jazz bass?

    Hi guys, Im interesting in fitting a bass ramp onto one of my jazz basses to see how I get on. Im told they are good for developing a lighter touch and for having easier access to a range of playing positions and therefore tones.

    Ive had a scout about on here and it seems they divide opinion... So I guess my questions are as follows:

    1. Anyone fitted one themselves? Is it an easy fix? Is it easily reversible?
    2. Have you seen any tangible benefit in your playing?
    3. Where did you get it? Other than very expensive hand built wooden ramps I can't see any companies selling affordable, off the peg, ramps online and if i make one myself I'm bound to c@ck it up!
    4. How important is getting the same radius as the neck?
    5. Assuming the ramp does work for developing that lighter touch am I going to find that when I play my other five J basses they feel uncomfortable? Don't really want the expense of putting ramps on them all!

    I would also recommend Scott's bass lessons. It's a great resource to dip into when you have time.

    However, if time is an issue id recommend a monthly lesson with a good teacher if weekly is not doable. Nothing makes me find time to practice more than the thought of turning up having not done my homework. Plus being tight I hate the idea of paying and then not making the most of their expertise. Personally I find it too easy to procrastinate when working from books...
