1. Sorry to be the voice of dissent, and far be it from me to talk people out of GAS (I'm normally all about living vicariously through other BCers purchases) but you might be better off keeping the money to see you through uni and avoid such a large student loan/debt. Just a thought.

  2. When I first started playing bass I eventually joined a classic rock band where the drummer seemed pretty good (he was new to the band also). However, I failed to be able to lock in with him, we made a good noise and held it altogether but I felt something was missing and blamed it on my lack of ability. Anyway we have 2 gigs come along that he can't do and we need a dep. I have a friend who I consider to be top notch and who I played in a band with when I was playing guitar, so I asked if he could dep for us which he did. Revelation! From the first few seconds there was something happening and we locked really well, not by arrangement but just by feeling the song. I thought this might be down to my prior experience with him, but the band's orginal drummer came along to the gig (he only quit to attend a BIMM course) and asked to get up for a number. Result, the same locking all over again. What I have seen over the intervening years is that a lot of drummers just play the way they always have without much consideration to the song's groove. You can lock with these guys but it feels just plain wrong and often upsets the song. In this situations I have found it best to play what I normally would for each song and hope against hope that the drummer eventually gets it.

This is not an anti drummer rant as I'm sure (and I know) that the reverse is true where the drummer grooves and the bass player just does his normal thing. But oh that magical moment when both the low end and the tub thumper get together! It's almost worth playing with drummers who don't really groove for that magical moment when you play with one that does.

My favourite bass moment is when I was actually in a band full time with the dep drummer mentioned above. We were playing that old chestnut "Walking The Dog" and I was laying down a line which was a rip off of Rocco Prestia's line from "Squib Cakes", this made it nice and funky and the drummer was completely in synch, as I knew he would be as a Tower Of Power fan. We were nearing the end and we hadn't rehearsed the song so there was no agreed out, we'd just wing it. Without any hesitation we both played the ending from TOP's "Down At The Nightclub" as tight as a gnat's chuff, without a word being exchanged beforehand. If both of us had grinned anymore the tops of our head's would've fallen off. Much high fiving was had. Best moment on bass ever.

Ah happy days, I remember 'singing' this with my 2 best friends.

There are plenty of other 'lyrics' too delivered by the great Viv Stanshall, for instance, "Spanish guitar and introducing acoustic guitar" and of course, "Plus tubular bells!".

  4. Watched it last night and I was a bit disappointed. Problem was that listening to too much Planet Rock had built it up in my expectations. I'm not saying it was bad, far from it, but for my liking there were too many talking heads and not enough of the man and band, the exception being Hawkwind and Metallica. Lemmy's apartment was a revelation, that place is worthy of a very old lady who can't throw anything away (probably not the dagger collection though :) ). Loved the joke about "How do you make a dead baby float?" I howled.

As you were so impressed with it when you played it I can make it available to you for a one off rental of £600 :)

  7. Well the time has come for me to actually put this up for sale rather than just talking about it in other threads. What we have here is a Fender Roadworn with the usual relicing that I have had an extra P p/up professionally fitted to it by The Bass Centre. The additional p/up is a Seymour Duncan SPB-1. In addition I have changed the pick guard for a black one and have had the p/ups wired to a 3 way switch. There is also a Hipshot D Tuner fitted (a correct reverse tuner suitably scuffed up a bit). I found that the nitro on the neck was very sticky, so this has been removed, sanded back and then Danish oiled to a smooth natural finish very akin to a MusicMan neck finish. The reason I'm selling this on is that due to the light weight of the bass I find it a little head heavy (YMMV) which aggravates a shoulder injury. I've made an alternative button placement position which alleviates my problem somewhat but doesn't cure it for me.

Sound wise it obviously does the P thing, and does it brilliantly, but with the added p/up you can get a really nice open sound (great for slapping or pick playing) when both are on together, or a really aggresive honk when the bridge p/up is soloed. Think J bass on steroids and you won't go far wrong. Comes with a Fender gigbag. So to the photos.....

I'm more than happy to have potential buyers come and have a try at Ezbass Towers. Price I want £600 and would prefer collection, although I will send by courier if you have a company you like to use. I have a suitable box for shipment (one I had a bass delivered in).

For more details or extra photos PM me. Sadly I can't do soundclips.
The 60`s P are getting more and more rare, are getting too expensive for a normal bass player, so it is getting to the next step the 70`s P.
It is a question of supply and demand.
Wait a while and 80s Ps will suddenly become desirable.

  10. It could be that when deciding on the make up of the instrument the buyers may try and make it 'a bass for every occasion' and in doing so make it a jack of all trades but master of none. How many times have we read things like, "How close to a P bass does a J sound?" and similar in the hope that one bass will do it all?

Lozz196's comment also has a lot of truth in it. A friend of mine who has played a P and a Ray for over 20 years had a 5 string Bernie Goodfellow made. Marvellous p/ups and EQ, piezo, and pretty as a picture. He hardly ever plays it because it isn't his P or Ray.

I'm not saying this why all custom basses fall out of favour, just a potential reasons. Only those who have owned and sold on a custom instruments can tell you their particular reasons. I would certainly like to hear them.

  11. The Ernie Ball Music Man USA Sterling is a bass model whereas the Sterling By Music Man (SBMM) is a range of offshore copies of the EBMM range including a copy of the Sterling itself (the SB14) just to confuse the matter completely.

When it comes to the Stingray you have the choice of:

US built EBMM Stingray available in 4 string with a choice of p/up configs (although most are the classic 1 humbucker variety) with either 2 or 3 band EQ.

US built EBMM Stingray available in 5 string with a choice of p/up configs (again mostly with just the one humbucker) with 3 band EQ and 3 position coil/wiring selector.

SBMM Ray34 or 35, offshore built versions of the above.

SUB a discontinued US built 'economy' version of the 'Ray with 2 band EQ. Great basses worth getting 2nd hand from the Basses for Sale forum.

That's a real basic summing up and I'm sure that StingrayPete and McNach will be along shortly to flesh this out far more.

Oh yeah then there's the discontinued OLP budget offshore range, but I'm not going to get into those :)
